Driving from DFW to NW Austin (Lakeway area) Thursday, leaving the airport around 9:30. What’s good off 36 between say Waco and Round Rock? Could always do Cedar Park’s Stiles Switch but it’s out of the way for this endeavor.

I ask like I won’t also eat 20 kolaches from the Czech Stop ..

Interstellar BBQ on 620 is really good (Texas Monthly #2 in 2021) and should be right on your way.

This is where I feel so damn lucky.  We've been married for almost 8 years.  She bought a target purse while we were dating, and after the kids were picking the fake leather apart on it, she bought some Amazon purse maybe a year ago at most.  2 purses in a decade, and nothing name brand.  Her parents instilled some damn good fiscal responsibility in her, for sure!

I bought my wife a Coach purse back when we were dating before the turn of the century.  She didn't much use a purse before and only uses it occasionally.  It'll last her lifetime.

Yeah, but they weighed what, 15 lbs or so?  Put me in the camp of not buying the "inflation adjusted" BBQ prices.  Some of it is just demand.

LeRoy says that finished brisket amounts to 36% of the total.  L&L use almost every piece for different things:  burgers and tallow primarily.  Watching their various videos - it appears that L&L has very little waste.

Here is a video of his brisket yield test:

  4. I didn't take a picture of the LeRoy & Lewis menu with the prices, but its not cheap.  I know the brisket, which is only available on Saturdays, was $40/pound.  The $23 two meat plate had an upcharge of $2 for sliced beef and $3 for brisket.

  5. We use 1Password.  Has worked well for us for three years or so.

App for the mobile devices and plug-in for browser.  Easy to share specific logins with other family members.  Can auto populate credit card numbers in a couple clicks of the mouse.

  6. Interesting.  I don't think I've ever cooked chuck roast such that I could slice it.  I've always braised & shredded it for pot roast, shredded beef tacos, etc.  Was it tough?
    First five minutes of
explains where and how L&L gets chuck meat for its sliced beef.

Probably could not get and results with a regular chuck roast.

Wasn't tough - taste and consistency of a sirloin steak.  The flat iron was very tender and seasoned just like a brisket.  You can see the flat iron on my plate and both on the tray.

Leroy & Lewis still has the truck at Cosmic Coffee though, yes?  I'd bet there's no line there.

They do and there are probably short lines.  However, I believe it is a reduced menu.  They didn't have the daily specials of brisket or bacon ribs yesterday.

  9. Hit LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue's new brick and mortar yesterday.  Got there around 11:30 and it was a two hour wait.  Probably the busiest time of the entire week.

They have an "Anytime Eats" menu which can be ordered at the bar with no line, no waiting.   Burgers, sandwiches, sausage wraps, onion rings, etc.  Some people ordered from this menu to eat while in line.

Regular by-the-pound menu regular items were sliced beef, chopped beef, pulled whole hog, direct smoked chicken, and sausages.  Daily specials of beef cheeks on Fridays; brisket and bacon ribs on Saturdays; and pork chops, beef barbacoa, and lamb barbacoa on Sundays.

I talked with Evan who was on the cutting board.  Sliced beef was either flat iron or chuck roast.  Flat iron tasted like brisket and chuck roast was more like smoked steak.  Both were very good.

I ordered the two meat plate with sliced beef, whole hog, Caesar slaw, and kimchi.  My buddy ordered the Pitmaster's Platter which has both types of sliced beef, whole hog, two types of sausage, cauliflower burnt ends, miso glazed carrot, and a bunch of sides.

  10. There is enough room in the timeline to do another movie between the Chalamet movie and the Wilder movie.  However, the older Wonka is considerably more cynical and I'm not sure I want to see that evolution.  Oompa Loompas fleeing the vermicious knids could be interesting, though.

I have not, nor will ever knowingly buy any seafood from SE Asia after watching a documentary about their practices.   If its not Gulf shrimp no thanks

Vietnamese catfish is all too often substituted for other fish filets - farm raised catfish, sole, grouper, . . .

Only fish I order out is Patagonian toothfish.

The bulk of the Grease soundtrack.

I got that album when it came out in '78 - a few years prior to even seeing the movie.  I remember some kids doing Greased Lightening at an elementary talent show when I was in 3rd grade.

  13. When I was a kid, my parents had one of Steve Martin's comedy albums.  To this day, I can quote most of the bits.  In fact, there were several cuts in the documentary which I knew immediately.

My college-aged daughters (no pics) really like Only Murders in the Building.  I love the fact that they can appreciate Steve Martin and Martin Short, too.

  14. When he's old enough, have him get a job at HEB.  My daughter (no pics) worked there her senior year in high school, goes on LOA while she is away at college, picks up shifts over school breaks and summer, and gets two partner discount cards.  10% off HEB branded items which includes most chicken and beef.  The discount card works even while she is on LOA.  Over holiday weekends, the discount card goes to 25% off.
