  1. Just opened a chase sapphire account for the 80k bonus points for $4k in spending. Will be my corporate travel card. I typically spend around 3k a week with flight, hotel, meals, rental car, etc. Also been flying delta and staying at marriotts pretty religiously the past few months. Cut up my corporate issued card as that program is getting reigned back in.

Any tips or tricks for a newbie on point programs?

so just google ingredients for bread.  it's some variation on flour, salt, sugar, yeast, water and something like egg or oil.  lipids soften up the bread and not really essential.  So even this gets into 'what oil to use?'

now the ingredients for a loaf of Natures Own bread

Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Brown Sugar, Wheat Gluten, Contains 2% or Less of Each of the Following: Salt, Monoglycerides [shelf life], Enzymes, Ascorbic Acid [ aka Vit C helps dough rise], Soybean Oil [lipid of choice], Vinegar, Cultured Wheat Flour, Monocalcium Phosphate [baking powder], Soy Lecithin [emulsifier]

so nothing too crazy in there.  maybe you would consider soybean oil bad.  again i am not sure what is considered good/bad.  the few ing. lists i googled seem to use soybean oil.

found this as well RE: gluten (source: the interwebz)

The majority of American wheat grown is hard red wheat, which is high in protein and thus gluten. In Europe, the majority of wheat grown in Europe is soft wheat, which is lower in gluten. so that could explain the gluten difference across the pond.

I bake my own. About 2 cups of bread flour, two cups of water, 2.25 tablespoons of yeast, 2 tablespoons kosher salt, mix, cover and let rise for 3 hours. Put in the oven at 450 for 35 minutes. It’s delicious and easy.

Thanks.  Prime Strip at HEB is $15-$16 / lb right now, so that works a bit better.  Might not be as good a steak, though.

I've bought both prime and choice steaks from Costco and they are my go to, and better than anything I can find at a grocery store... but I also don't have HEB. Always a better price.

My HEB prime steaks are the equivalent of Costco choice.  Costco prime is a very very good steak.  I've just started buying choice at Costco.

Haven't been to CostCo in awhile . . . any Austinites know how their steaks are priced these days?  Choice or Prime, don't care.  Ribeye, NY Strip, or tenderloin.

I think they're pretty standard pricing across Texas (my mom shops in the Frisco Costco and has the same prices as me in Houston).  Choice tenderloin/filet are around $19 per pound, prime tenderloin/filet is $22/$23 per pound.  I believe Prime Strip is around $20 per pound, choice strip is $18?  Prime Ribeye is $19 and choice ribeye is $16/$17.  I haven't bought strip or ribeye from Costco in a while.  Filet prices were as of last weekend.

The 70.3 is less than 6 weeks away and it's amazing how much more prepared I am this year compared to last. I am one of those people that have to do something first and learn the hard way for the next time. I've done several 50 mile rides this time and ran after and have been able to hold a 7:00 mile after the bike ride so I feel like a sub 5:30 is very possible this year. Saturday, I have a 15k race that is very hilly but should be able to hold a 6:42 pace the whole time and then Sunday will do a 60 mile ride and run 4 miles after. I've improved on swimming but still hate it. Thank God for a wetsuit legal race.

    Good luck man. I’m eyeing a 70.3 in 2025.

Look him up on YouTube if you enjoy that kind of content. Ive learned quite a bit from him.

I like Jeff nippard. He’s a no BS kinda guy that promotes full body exercises. He does tend to concentrate more on the bodybuilding aspect of fitness which I’m not really into any longer but a lot of his diet information is very good.

  7. YMMV. I’m a distance runner with an Apple Watch. I think it’s an 8. I use it to track my mileage. It also has a heart rate monitor than varies a lot when compared to my wife’s Garmin watch. It’s accurate enough if you aren’t moving around but if you walk, run, bike, it’s not much help in terms of heart monitors.

Do you see the disconnect in saying you are all for gun reform while voting for politicians that are staunchly opposed to any gun reform?

I tend to vote for people that will leave me the fuck alone.

    No, you aren’t.

The “political climate” is of your own making. You’ve decided to elect officials that will never bring forth gun reform.

You are the opposite of “all for”.

    lol ok

I’d just like to point out how disingenuous and insincere the conversation around common sense reform ideas is when the people suggesting them know full well they will continue to vote for elected officials that will NEVER platform on them because it’s political suicide.

Exactly like the reform of SS/Medicare/Medicaid.  Welcome to politics.

I'm all for some type of gun reform law that will take guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable.  But given the political climate, ain't nothing going to change.  Which is why I carry.  You literally never know.

I own six guns and have never carried.  My wife hhhhhaaaaates, and I mean hates, guns and made me send them to my parents' house when we got married.  I had no issue with that as, despite living in Housotn, I figure I'm much more likely to accidently shoot one of my balls off than actually need it - which has proven true for over twenty years.  Plus, I'm not scared of my own shadow.

Why does your wife hate guns?

I guess most of the carry crowd also wears Kevlar vests when they head to wal-mart or wherever it is y’all hang out in public?

Actually, I am shocked that idea hasn’t been floated for all kids to be wrapped in Kevlar. It’s a solution.

I avoid Wal-Mart.  Mainly just stick to HEB (when it's open).

  13. A few months ago, I always carried. I didn’t travel for work at my previous company. Changed jobs and have been flying more frequently so obviously can’t carry.

Never shot anything aside from deer or dove. My dad was in law enforcement and I grew up around guns. I have shotguns, rifles, many pistols.

If you want to read about food, weight, and performance, read about Allie Kiefer.  Pro marathoner, lives in Austin (I think), and always had trouble breaking through.  She was rail thin like they all are but then she put on 15 lbs, which those types NEVER Do.  She ended up being like 125 or something, which made her look like a defensive end.  She ended up with more endurance, fewer injuries, and better sustained speed.

A lot of elite runners (pro and amateur) have very dysfunctional relationships with food.

Ryan Hall quit running and just ate like a normal person while keeping his regimen and did this:

This hits home for me. When I lost a ton of weight (315 -> 178), I wasn’t eating a well balanced diet and couldn’t run more than 5 miles to save my life. I gained 10 pounds by eating a better diet (more fat and carbs) and boom, my training exploded, I look a lot better, feel a lot better, and finished a marathon (not at the time I wanted so I signed up again next year!) I just finished my last race of the season - half marathon. Ran it in 1:47:00. This was my second half of the season (first was in October - Houston Half) and I shaved 8 minutes off the time. It really is amazing what hard work and consistency in training AND diet will do for you.

  15. After the whole SWA shitshow, I’m done with them. Flew Delta from Hobby to Albany, NY and was quite impressed. Disappointing that they only have 3 flights a day out of Hobby and only to ATL but oh well. If I fly east coast, I’ll fly delta. If I go west, I’ll go United out of IAH.

I had companion pass for 3 years with SWA but just can’t stand them anymore. Terrible planes, terrible clientele, very ugly stewardesses.

You know dozens of people who successfully lost weight and maintain weight loss. Yet studies and surveys and population data make it clear those people are outliers.

I get that these people are outliers (myself included) and can appreciate a doctor (like yourself) who recommends diet and exercise.  However, patients aren't incentivized to actually follow through with said diet and exercise, are they?  No, their insurance will cover the cost of these drugs that enable their current lifestyle.
