The only coach that matters is Aranda. They could fire Ogre, elevate Aranda to HC and keep numerous other assistants and make it palatable with some help from pissed off boosters. It will only take one year of shitting the bed for things to come to a head quickly down there.

While I think Aranda is a rising star, the situation you laid out is fraught with peril because of infighting, backstabbing, and power plays. It could work, but it ain't that easy.

The notion of just drafting a safety in the 2nd instead is crazy. The bust rate in the draft is very high. You absolutely take the proven safety. Plus Earl would really help back there with all of our young DBs. Young talent is good, but you have to have some vets back there too

It is crazy. I'll listen to fear about the salary cap ramifications, but a 2nd rounder for Earl is chump change.

I wouldn't do a trade for Earl that does not include a swap for Cole Beasley, and possibly a pick no earlier than the extra 4.

The Cowboys need an infusion of young talent and no big risk factors.

I'm going to die on this hill. YOU TRADE A 2ND ROUNDER FOR THE BEST SAFETY IN FOOTBALL!

And then we all high five opening day when the defense looks drastically improved.

EDIT: I may have misread your terms. My bad.

Shaka Smart was asked to be involved with Wilson's recruitment a while ago and allegedly slowplayed it. Wilson is a shooter who can help a P5 program in basketball for free. At least Smart's shown up now, I guess.

Smart will be the coach forever if he helps the football team land 5-star recruits.

I figured we’d have 1 or 2 public commitments from last weekend even though the coaches seemingly weren’t prioritizing it, so now I’m jonesing for someone to pull the trigger.

Seems like they are playing it like last year. Weren't they pretty evenly spaced out through the dog days of summer?

The Cowboys have too many holes to fill to pay the price Earl will require in both picks and salary. If they were close to Superbowl contenders that would be another thing.

I think you're crazy. We're talking about one of the best safeties in football.  And in today's NFL, the Cowboys are absolutely a Superbowl contender.

So lets say a guy is pretty certain is going to Texas and then he goes to Ohio State and meets with Urban Meyer, are you telling me its surprising that Meyer would be able to persuade him that maybe Ohio State is the better choice? Do you think Meyer is bad or new at this thing called recruiting? Oh and they have your HS QB putting the full court press on you, you dont think that matters? So the kid becomes unsure of what he wants to do. He is torn between two great programs. Is that surprising to you? Not me. Does that mean he committed to OSU? No. And then the kid goes to Texas and loves it. Says they showed him everything he needed to see and then promptly announces he may push his decision back a little. And somehow you think that confirms he was committed to OSU? Uh, no.

Im not getting into details here. But I know for a FACT Wilson did not commit to OSU. Did he really like it? Yes. Did his visit really open his eyes and make it seem possible to go there? Yes. Does pushing back his decision confirm anything other than the kid is torn between two great programs who are both making him a priority? No. He is in a great position with either school and neither is a bad choice for him.

I wont be commenting anymore on Wilson's decision. Its his to announce and i believe he will announce it sooner than later.

This all makes sense to me. You know, I really appreciate you articulating this particular situation as opposed to charging me $9.95 and saying the situation with fluid.

Brace yourself for next year, where we have to decide whether or not a Lake Travis kid that will likely have gaudy stats is our QB take. It's going to be a nightmare, even if we get the dream take in Bryce Young.

I won't be sweating it. If Tom can nail QB evals, then that will give him much more margin for error in other areas. Sorry, this is the A&M thread.

Jimbo needs to sign a stud this year. I hope he goes with an immobile pocket passer.

  9. What do we think the true price of Earl will be before the draft? Does a 2nd and a 5th or something like that get it done? If so, I can't imagine a better impact player to help the defense. That guy would be the brain of the defense and a force multiplier.

Dak won't be a bargain forever.

Would you like me to go find his article after the WVU victory detailing how all was well, the coaches weren’t idiots and the oceans were healed?

Dan sees technique points that are well above my paygrade. He should. Doesn’t change the fact that his hit rate for predicting the future performance of our OL is about the same as a lay poster.

And I apologize if I didn’t catch the sarcasm font your might have been using.

I was ribbing. But seriously, I don't know what the quoted passage means and why he was so excited about it. That part was a real question.

It'd probably take our 2nd with us getting a 3/4th back...... I think we move down before we move up.

I was listening to a Brugler draft podcast and then saw Peter King's most recent mock. Both had Derwin James slipping to around 15-16. Would you do that deal, too?

He was bullish on last year’s line when CW returned. Oops.

Dan has forgotten more about OL play today than I have ever bothered to learn. But he twists with the wind with regards to his UT football articles and is loathe to lay blame at the staff’s feet.

His opinions of last year’s efforts changed radically at about three different points during the season.

Bobby, quit worrying so much about being right and explain this to me please:

"During turn pass protection, all five guys up front worked together and seemed to understand how to have five block four as one unit. There shouldn't be any single matchups when five block four. I have been waiting forever to see this, and I can’t tell you how happy I am to finally see it. This is a really big deal!"

because they were blind every day in practice the first year?

collin johnson, he's our top target.  oh shit, he gets double teamed on most plays.  maybe i should design some fucking plays to create some space for him so he doesn't get blanketed every time.  or use that double team to draw routes for someone else to run into the space vacated by the double team.

duvernay, holy shit he's fast.  maybe i should create some plays to take advantage of his spend and draw some underneath routes to commit a safety.

    Probably a lot of factors.

But I share your offensive frustration. Last year was painful.

Can't read this because it's paywalled (and I refuse to pay for a 247 subscription), but Dan Neil seems to be bullish on the O-line, for what it's worth.

I'm interested in his thoughts, but not going to give that site my monies. I find his insight pretty spot on. I remember his Connor Williams is a stud write up after the Notre Dame game (blowout loss).

I think most sane fans (I realize that may be an oxymoron) are bracing for tough season; but 6 wins and a bowl game should be basically no sweat, and 8 is probably the ceiling (ironically, that 8th win would probably make more headlines and talking heads chatter)

You say that now. Watching a team lose gets frustrating very quickly, especially when EVERYONE in the country will be poking fun at you every chance they get.

That said, I think you have the right attitude.
