He has much more to sell, but he also has much higher expectations to meet. Additionally, he has to deal with Alabama, Auburn, and LSU every year. The tone in College Station will change dramatically once they fail to meet those lofty standards.

We like to talk about the extremes of Jimbo, but I'm interested about the middle because I think that's most likely. He can recruit really well and still have a very challenging path to the playoffs.

From watching Stripling's tape, he's really freaking good and might be underrated at #110.  Regardless, if you're going on Rankings, Leal is 79 natinoally and Stripling is 110; that's not much of a difference. My point is if you're saying Leal is hard to replace, then Stripling should be in that same category.  I'm not sure what your expectations are, but if you think the staff can just go OOS and find a DL in the top 100, then you're likely in for disappointment unless we win a ton this year.

We'll likely get Nana in the class this year, which is big, but the other DL we take are not likely to be in the same tier as Stripling.

    I stand corrected.

Just like rumlin, load up on wr's and db's. Then one or two in the trenches.

uhh, A&M is in as good of a position with most of the top in-state OL/DL talent as us, if not better. They have Leal + Stripling + Mowry, and lead for Green + Coker + maybe Shepherd (tough to tell where that recruitment's going).

I get the need to do well in-state, but Leal, Stripling, and Mowry is replaceable. Leal is the most difficult, but if you can't find other options for Stripling and Mowry, then you shouldn't be coach at Texas.

So you aren't reading anything we've been saying?  Or you dont believe the TCU talk?  If so why?  TCU is what everyone Is saw saying   including the kid if the offer comes.

Do you have info that says different?

Are you a troll? I won't hold it against you.

The Clemson, Auburn and Bama beatdowns this year are going to taste particularly sweet.

I just hope their offense stalls and everyone starts to criticize thin-skinned Jimbo's offensive philosophy. Sometimes transitions years give you Kliff and Manziel. Sometimes they give you  Ash and Espinosa retirements after the first game. I'm hoping A&M is dealt the latter. I don't think they'll handle it well.

probably some truth to that. also probably worth mentioning that his dad is the qb coach at syracuse and he's married to dino babers' daughter, so that may have had a little to do with it as well.

Of course, but with Schmidt and Turner's histories, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have the most faith in them.

Separately, and I'm interested in knowing whether the $9.95ers are saying as much, but I think there's a great chance that Tyler Johnson commits this weekend if he visits.

That would be awesome. Secure some more studs and continue to build the class.

I have a feeling Herb is going to save Beck's "job" this year. Just like Orlando gave Herman lots of cover fire last year overall.

<Ricky daydream> No, I think Herman knows Kliff won't survive this season in Lubbock. He's biding his time until he can hire the most lethal and photogenic OC in college football. <end Ricky daydream>

I think Herman's SoCal strategy is going to payoff in the next couple of years. I think Helton is a good coach, but I don't get the feeling that he excites the SC fanbase. An average season or two could lead to a wandering eye. Then we can pounce.

I think he is referring to the fact that Wilson and Leal were supposed to be Texas bound. We also had a nice fansite narrative mocking A&M’s “fauxmentum” when in reality they were building momentum.

Could you let me know what momentum is, when it starts, how it trends, and the exact moment at which it ends and when it is regained?

So what are the odds Beck absquatulates if it becomes apparent he's lost Herman's confidence? I'd think he'd rather take a job elsewhere than take a demotion in place.

Herman admitted to calling plays in the bowl game, so Beck already had his nuts snipped. Regardless of what is said publicly, I think Herman will call plays. I don't think he's protecting Beck out of loyalty, I think he's protecting himself and trying to avoid negative perception of his OC hire. This is all my hopeful opinion. I'm often wrong.

Some will laugh at this, but outside of Graham all our DL were composite 3*'s and we arguably have the best DL in conference and definitely  better than that garbage unit at aggy.  Do we want the high end DL guys?  Of course.  But our DL situation isn't in a terrible spot.  I like all 5 DL guys we got last year and NaNa is a stud.

This is where I come down. Leal is elite so you want him, but now you just have to find a backup plan. You just have to hit on a few studs. Also, we should reserve this level of freak out for Malcom Brown or Ed Oliver level prospects.

I was walking in the same gate at Minute Maid as Waddle was a few weeks ago. He's fucking tiny. It reminded me that there really aren't a whole lot of 5'8" guys dominating in the P5 programs these days. Should be interesting to see if he's the exception or fits into the current norm.

    I bet he's an exception. I watched a BBall clip of him 360 dunking. It's like he's a kangaroo.

So if you're a hiring manager, would you rather hire a McCombs graduate or a Stanford Media Studies graduate?

I'd hire the Stanford one because they're obviously smarter, and then train them to be better at business.

Ah the Night Before Leal's Commitment.

I can almost hear Burton pecking away on his Packard Bell writing his "Wednesday" column bemoaning Oscar Giles.

I expect the second "paragraph" to be an open love letter to his ole pal Tim Brewster.

Burton hasn't been this down on Texas DL recruiting since last December's signing day.

Also it would be nice if the students showed up to the spring game, but I know they won't. A bunch of emo nerds on campus these days. Me and my friends would have used this as a pre-game for 6th. The nerds will be playing fornite in Jester instead.

I bet you guys crushed it back in your day.
