Some of this stuff might have been mentioned randomly in a thread here or there, but I haven't seen it. I'm just going to throw some CFB things out there with 1/3 of the season behind us that I find interesting in case anyone else has a POV on it or some other things to add. I know this is long for those with short attention spans, but I don't give a shit and they can click out and find a safe space.

-Notre Dame is about to play their 2nd of 5 consecutive games in which the opponent has a bye before playing them. That's 5 games of 2 weeks to prepare for ND by the opponent. I don't think I've ever even heard of that. I hate Notre Dame, but damn, that shit is rough.

-Notre Dame is undefeated, yet they're a home dog this weekend to a G5 team. Again, I don't know if I've ever heard of that. I know they've had a few seasons in the last 20 in which they flat out sucked, so maybe it's happened then, or whenever that high school coach was coaching them ahead of the Lou Holtz era.

-The last time Iowa allowed more than 24 points in a game was November 23rd, 2018 in a win over Nebraska. Iowa has a pedestrian offense and Kirk Ferentz, so they're not a top 10 team to me and I think they will probably lose their next two to prove it, but the defense is elite.

-BYU has a better Pac 12 conference record (3-0) this year than anyone in the conference. "That's a bullshit stat since the conference teams haven't played each other 3 times yet." Fair, but there are only 6 conference teams undefeated in conference so far, and 4 of those teams play each other this weekend. BYU still has Wazzou and USC left on their schedule. They have a pretty freaking great chance of going 5-0 in the Pac 12 on the season, which speaks to either their legitimacy as a top 15 program or the futility of the Pac 12, or maybe both.

-The Big 10 West is an absolute dumpster fire, with Iowa and Purdue the only 2 teams having no losses in conference yet. Purdue has actually played teams tough this year, losing a close game at Notre Dame in which ND pulled away late, and beating another underrated and decent team, Oregon State. They'll run over Minnesota this weekend at home, then play @Iowa after a bye, then Wiscy, @Nebraska, MSU, @Ohio State. If they go 4-2 and beat Iowa in that stretch, they've got a great shot at winning the west. Brohm has a chance to remind people that he exists.

-Tennessee could have had Greg Schiano coaching for them. They've beaten Bowling Green and Tennessee Tech. They still get to play South Carolina, South Alabama and Vanderbilt. If these idiots can sneak a win in against Missouri or Kentucky, they'll go bowling having beaten one P5 team with a winning record. I don't see how they're better than 6-6. Missouri is pretty fucking terrible as well, especially on defense, so even if Tenn wins that game, they might be 6-6 without beating a P5 team with a winning record.

-As to Missouri, they've beaten Central Michigan 34-24 and SE Missouri State 59-28. They gave up 35 and 41 to UK and Boston College respectively. They get Arkansas and ATM from the west. The ATM game will feature one team with an above average offense against an above average defense and the other team with an abysmal offense going against an abysmal defense. Anyone thinking ATM will just roll through them in Columbia before the season has to be rethinking that position.

-The SEC East overall is a fucking joke. Florida looked good against Alabama, but they're a Dan Mullen coached team that will find a way to finish unimpressively with a 9-4 record. Todd Grantham is still the DC there. Wow. Missouri and Tennessee would qualify as trash if that word weren't being defined currently by Vanderbilt and South Carolina. Kentucky is 4-0 by playing ULaMonroe, Missouri, Chattanooga, and South Carolina. They beat Chatt in a squeaker, 28-23. They still get to play NMSU, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Mississippi State. They will be the worst 8-4 or 9-3 team in the country. Georgia is the class of the division, obviously. Their October opponents are a combined 14-2 currently, so if they exit the month 8-0, they'll have earned the hype. They'll walk through November playing Missouri, Tenn, Charleston Southern, and Ga Tech.

-I don't know who else watched the USC/Oregon State game, but it was a gratifying blowout that was uglier than the score reflected. Oregon State won in the Coliseum for the first time in 61 years.

-Florida State is 0-4 and favored at home by 4.5 points against a 3-1 Syracuse team that just beat a pesky Liberty team. I assume Vegas knows something I don't. FSU has UMass on the schedule in a few weeks. There's a legitimate shot that they finish 1-11 if you take a look at the schedule. I mean, it's ugly.

-Oklahoma is giving up 10.5 points to KSU in Manhattan this weekend. In 3 home games so far against FBS opponents, OU hasn't beaten a team by more than 7 points. I don't think Vegas knows a thing here. I just think everyone is expecting OU to be better than they've looked so far. I don't expect to see that this week. They usually wait until the Texas game to get their shit together.

-Oregon visits Palo Alto this weekend. Stanford blows, but Mario Cristobal is west coast Tom Herman. He'll fuck up a game this year somewhere, so I wouldn't be shocked if it's this one.

-Nebraska is 2-3 and still plays Northwestern this weekend and @Minnesota in a few weekends. They also get Michigan, Purdue, Ohio State and Iowa at home, and Wisconsin on the road. It's not difficult to see them finishing 4-8 in Frost's 4th year on campus.

-Finally, ULaLa plays an undefeated South Alabama team this weekend. As far as things go for Texas' bowl outlook and national POV at the end of this season, provided Texas is sitting on something like 9-3 or better, it would be great if ULaLa was 11-1. This is actually a key game for them getting there.

Sorry for the tl;dr aspects of this, but figured some folks might give a shit in discussing it.

  2. I noticed in the Arkansas game, that everyone’s favorite safety Sloneal, had key roles in helping pig score on both touchdowns. Was hoping, because admittedly I an unable, someone can post the gifs or otherwise add to his already illustrious highlight reel.

I'm not sure you do follow recruiting. This staff has not been impressive on the trail outside of DL, but even then we have a qualification risk and a guy from LA and and a guy from MS who have the in-state schools that will continue to recruit them for the next few years. I'd say odds at least one DL who is currently committed doesn't end up enrolling here.

It would be decent but not great.  The foot issue thing for Thompson is a concern, Coleman is very overrated by the recruiting services, and Hudson would be on his third commitment if he ends up with us which is always a red flag.

I bet you are fun at parties.

We aren’t playing it because we don’t have the systems setup to do it effectively and not get caught. And if we are we’re using a very antiquated systems that is no longer effective.

we fucked up NIL huge so that point is currently moot.  Ctj doesn’t think bag men will be as effective going forward but I believe it’s going to take strong movement on both fronts to remain competitive

Thanks for the response. I interpret it (for the most part) that it takes time to implement what needs to be done and hopefully the above things get fixed for the next cycle and beyond.

I agree with you on the bag game not going away with NIL. NIL will pay kids once on campus. Lots of top tier kids may not be patient enough to wait and will want the bag dropped with each camp visit, unofficial visit, official visit, commit and signature.

I guess if our NIL game is so good it cause kids to wait then great, but as you said we have already fucked it up I am not holding my breath.

It's indicative that we arent playing the game like Georgia is. Mannings want the programs to bag it up to put pieces around Arch.

Assuming you are in the know, do you know why we are not playing the game like Georgia (and I assume aggy)?

With NIL we should now or soon be in the top payers tier. Or is it a distinction between NIL paying once on campus vs the bag game prior to campus (ie cash in hand to commit/sign).  Do you know if Texas will only pay via NIL route and that is what is hurting our current efforts?

I recall a CTJ post a while back that listed out tiers of playing the game and if I recall correctly those 2 schools were in the top group of anything goes. We were in the 2nd tier with bama. Ou in 3rd tier etc.

also I have to believe we are playing some games in this cycle with recent commits from deep in SEC country of Louisiana and Alabama and Mississippi (?).  What’s most disappointing is the loss of targeted top Texas recruits that are still turning us down even with incentives of NIL or otherwise. I keep hoping it is only because it takes a cycle to get a good bag game to take effect.

    I’ll hang up and listen.

  7. Ha. Probably not. Just think aggy has enough talent to over come the qb online concerns. Maybe in typical aggy fashion they find a way to fuck it up. Go auburn, LSU, one of the Mississippi schools. Other than those (already including a bama loss) don’t see a L.

Can someone help me here?  Some guy named Cujo who claims to be a Texas Insider has posted on the Orangeblood paid forum that KU is getting an invitation to the Big 10.  It has whipped some of the Phog.net posters into a frenzy.  I continue to state that while I would love for KU to get a Big 10 invite, I don’t see how they add enough value to get an invitation.  I get trashed and called. K-State fan when I post this !

Anyone know if Cujo has credibility.  Is this an elaborate ploy to get desperate KU fans to pay for an Orangebloods subscription?

I personally don’t find him credible, but he seems to have a following. Logic would say the chances of this guy knowing when no other leaks, corroborated reports or rumors are out there make it dubious.

if helpful this was his last post:

    Spoiler

actually your points are very valid. Looks like big 10 is being desperate. The likes to expand to the west coast have fallen through and are looking for some immediate help is what I was told. Geographically speaking Kansas may be the best option available right now.

by the way..my info is from Kansas side of things..they are fully expecting this to move fast as well

  9. OB’s latest comments re NIL and recruiting:

No. 3 - Stop with the NIL is crushing recruiting stuff...

I can tell who does and does not read this column on a regular basis almost entirely by some of the reactions this weekend to the news that Texas is...wait for it...a bit sluggish in recruiting with elite prospects at the moment.

    SHOCKING!!!!!!

    Or not.

One of the trendy talking points for those that will do anything to create talking points is to point the finger at the new boogieman of Texas football recruiting...NIL.

Understand this - Texas' lack of momentum in the 2022 recruiting class didn't start on July 1. Almost eight months have passed since Texas landed Maalik Murphy in recruiting and the program hasn't landed a player in the Rivals Top 150 since.

The reality is that it feels better to say that Kelvin Banks picked Oregon because of NIL as opposed to admitting that he might not believe in the vision and messaging of the program from the coaching staff. Or that he doesn't want to be alone in coming to Austin.

It's just the newest form of excuse-making... the kind that Aggies have embarked on for much of the last 20-25 years before Jimbo Fisher was able to change the narrative.

    No. 4 - Let's go over the non-NIL problems...

Instead of misplacing responsibility, let's take a look at the real issues facing the program as things currently stand in the 2022 class.

    1. As has been mentioned in this column countless times, elite of the elite prospects aren't giving this coaching staff the kind of first-year benefit of the doubt that Charlie Strong and Tom Herman both received.

    2. This staff can do better and finish better. Both the De'Anthony Gatson and Kelvin Banks recruitments featured miscalculations or misreadings. There's no reason to belabor the points again and again and again. The staff can be better.

    3. In the case of a few recruits around the state, there's a sense that there are briefcases full of cash in play. Of course, you know what the SEC calls recruitments that involve briefcases full of cash? They call it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday...

I don't know what to tell you about the third point, but the first two can be controlled and addressed with quality play on the field this season and the staff doing a better job.

In relative terms, no they’re not. But you having this mindset shows how stupid our fanbase is with regards to everything going on.

Not sure what you think my mindset is as I didn’t give it. Simply stated that it is strange to have Ou grouped in the non bag group on this board given the long history of cheating issues. I personally agree with you “in relative terms” from what I can tell.

otherwise you are welcome to enlighten this board with your thoughts. either way go get fucked.

Per the FWST, sounds like Baylor, Tech, and TCU are shopping themselves as a “package deal” to other conferences.

If true and you’re a Tech fan, I would be livid.

At a minimum adding Baylor to the package. I guess the Basketball NC is a feather, but my god they seem toxic with their history and devout religious connections which typically run contrary to the politics of large state institutions of public education.

Maybe I’m just biased, but I would consider them an anchor.

unfortunately for tech (and really the rest/majority of the remaining 8 it’s going to be difficult to land in a power conference. Most likely they realize this and then add small markets to the 12 and take the buyout money.

  12. All this talk about aggy cheating is fine and dandy.

The real issue as I understand it that payment to players is essentially legal now with NIL. Fine.  bring it out in the open. Establish once on campus x type of player should see y amount of money.

Presumably (I hope) we match or exceed what aggy bama  or any other SEC team pays. I will say that out of the gate I am concerned that we may not take full advantage the new environment and continue to try to win with one hand tied behind our back. Seems like we are pretty much fucked with the 22 class. Maybe we get our ass in gear for 23.

One thing seems clear though that payments will continue to kids not yet on campus, ie high-school recruits. Payments for visits. Payments for signatures. I have little doubt this is where Texas will continue to get beat up on the recruiting field.

Will the 5 star or other top talented kids wait to get the money once they step on campus (at Texas) or will we continue to lose kids that can get the money early and then again when they step on campus ( at a school other than Texas?

    the big lebowski dude GIF
