  1. Sheeeee-it.  We have around 1000 s. ft. of deck, and around 100 linear feet of railing, and a staircase.  The bids thus far are......for lots of money.

May end up just doing some repairs to get us a couple more years, save up some money to do a full replacement project then.  I got a kid to get through college still.

So....will his dealership still service my vehicle, or, ummm, do I need to look elsewhere for my warranty service needs?

Good points.  But remember what a theocratic dictator looks like when it comes back to our shores.  And as history has taught us, the most dangerous ones All don’t even practice the faith they claim to purport.

Dude.  He doesn't get the irony AT ALL.

I applaud your subtle, unstated, condemnation of christo-fascist  Nationalism.

Yeah...I do find it ironic at hell that one of the people ranting the loudest around here against the backwards islamofascist regime, built on a foundation of idiotic religious fundamentalism and intolerance, as well as repression of the opposition....wants the same damned type of regime to take power here in the US.  The fact that he can't see the irony makes it even better.

  5. Feel for you guys.  We were among the longest without power in 2021 (big freeze) and 2023 (Austin ice storm) and....it sucks.  Longest I was without it otherwise was around 3 days after Alicia in Houston in 83.  Hang at friend's places etc. with AC as much as you can (at least in the 2023 ice storm, we could get out and about and go other places, and the temp extremes tapered off after a day, so our bedroom was tolerable with a generator-powered space heater....I've thought of getting a small window unit for the same drill when the weather is hotter).  Really do hope shit gets fixed soon.

and idiots hear/read that and go, "Yup."

Idiots have finally become the dominant and most empowered constituency in American politics.  Once that happened, it was all over.

And you never could.  The idea that we could was an illusion, and it always was.  A lie we told ourselves so we could sleep at night.

We should just go ahead and start saying "Nate Paul didn't kill himself" now, in case Trump somehow wins (he won't).

    https://www.kxan.com/news/texas-politics/donald-trump-says-hed-consider-ken-paxton-for-u-s-attorney-general/

That pick is actually a no-brainer for both of them. Paxton is a criminal who needs the cover of higher office.  Trump is a criminal who needs a DOJ that will 1) protect him at all costs, and 2) distract from his malfeasance and be a weapon against his opponents (you know, what they currently accuse the DOJ of doing, but it's not actually doing).  It's a match made in hell.

Dunno why Rupar deleted the tweet.

My first W-2 job was waiting tables at Red Lobster (WAY back in the day...like, in the "they served hush puppies, not the cheddar bay biscuits" day).  Coincidence?  Draw your own conclusions.

I am become death, destroyer of franchises.

For those of you without kids in HISD.  Miles directed them to tell parents at 9PM last night and no earlier if there would be school the following day.  The Frank Black Middle School Principal (on her way out) did a decent thing and told everyone there would not be school.  The Oak Forest Elm. Principal sent out a coded message letting parents know.

Miles stringing along parents until 9PM the night before, just to be an asshole to parents, kids and Houston in general.

It's Texas governance -- the assholery is the point.

It's literally the ONLY point.  We have a state regime that literally has a one-line political platform: "Be complete fucking assholes."  That's it.  There's nothing else to it.  Lotta blank space on the page, because that one line is the whole fucking thing.

i continue to maintain that solar-driven archimedes screws and roman 1%-grade aqueducts (made with concrete culvert "tubes") can siphon and move all of the excess water from every lake that gets to 100% east of the brazos and move to ivie, spence, and to-be-built new reservoirs is 2 locations i have already identified

Sure.  There are all kinds of solutions.  Hell, we could hire a bunch of laborers and have them haul 5 gallon buckets by hand 500 miles -- it CAN be done.

The questions behind ALL of these solutions are 1) what will it cost, and 2) is there sufficient political will to overcome all the opposition to get it done?

People truly don't grasp the cost of these sort of things.  Just the land acquisition alone for the ROW for a pipeline, acqueduct, footpath for 5,000 laborers, whatever, would blow your mind.  Maintenance costs.  Pumping costs (will your solar powered screws manage to pump sufficient volume to get enough water where it needs to go?  Will we need more/bigger pumps, running 24/7?)  And don't forget reservoir costs -- land acquisition, permitting, construction, maintenance and operations....billions upon billions upon billions.

In a state that won't spend money on anything but border bouys.  Good luck.

    No, he was a Baha'i.

Our next door neighbor (a stone-cold knockout, by the way) is Persian Baha'i.  She got here as a teenage refugee, worked her way through college and grad school, and is remarkably successful.  I've met multiple Persia Baha'i over the years, and they all have been fine human beings.  It seems your grandfather was no exception.

My wife and I watched the last episode of A Gentleman in Moscow last night (we loved the book), and at the end, we ended up in a discussion about defectors, people fleeing oppressive states, and the like.  How we grew up in Houston knowing multiple defectors from behind the iron curtain, and from Iran, and even several Latin American countries.  How it is such a terrifying, and brave thing, and how difficult a calculus it is -- leaving everything you know behind, with no certainty that you would actually end up better off.  It's a decision for each individual, for their own reasons.

Your family story is both not unique but also an incredibly beautiful and tragic chapter that belongs to your family alone.  Thank you for sharing it with us.  Your grandfather was a blessing.  I wish you could have known him; I wish we all could have.

but wtf with the absolute dearth of ice in Europe. i mean it only requires water, it's not exactly a luxury 🤨

Totally a cultural thing.  It's a running joke in our family.  If you ask for ice, and if they have it and will bring it, you get....one ice cube.  "YOU GET ONE ICE!"

    (I mean, I assume the u.s. knows.)

I’m just GUESSING, but I’m pretty sure that Iran doesn’t have a robust spy satellite system.
