maybe, but I was in shock, what just happened?  What's a priest doing in robes doing at an Autogrill?  I guess they do drive, do they wear different clothes on their days off?  Maybe he's working?  It was all very strange.

    Also, what if you lose?

Fair question.  I took freshman algebra from a jesuit priest who was 6 foot 8, about 240 and built like a rock.  He'da kicked ALL our asses.

    You're part of the problem.

    In so, so many ways.....

Not the least of which is the fact that my wife loves to buy the $25 box of cookies from the Tiny Boxwoods that took over that location.

    Really good cookies, though.

  3. Hill-Bert's Lamar closed in 2008, and the location in the old 35th street Taco Bell was sold out from under them and closed in 2015.
Everybody should patronize their last place on Cameron. Good food, really nice people.

Last hill Bert’s I went to was the old 35th street location.

I don't know what the COA's claim to back taxes would be.  There was an ordinance exempting the houses from COA property taxes.  The City Council is now trying to overturn that ordinance.

Yeah, there are no back taxes owed -- the law was and remains that they are not taxed.  Any change to the law would be going forward.

How do we go about wrapping up Murica?

We don't.  It's not going to be a pre-packaged deal, or a Chapter 11.  Naah, we're just gonna go straight to Chapter 7 intellectual liquidation.  We'll produce three things of value for the world stage: 1) a breed of oligarchs that will make the Rooskies blush, 2) vapid, blockbuster mass entertainment, and 3) fast food.  Wait -- add a 4th thing: a massive high-tech military to protect the oligarchs' interests.

So, all things considered, most Americans will hardly notice the change.

Kinda how I felt after Torchy's took over Wok 'N Roll's spot on Burnet.

GODDAMIT.  I was just telling a colleague of my inadvertent racism story about that place.  I loved to grab takeout from there.  We liked the stir fried flat noodles (that I later learned are called chow fun).  The menu was just pictures, numbers, and chinese writing.  So, I ordered the #32, and then asked the asian girl behind the counter (pointing at the chinese writing) "how do I say that?"  And she says "I dunno, I'm Vietnamese."  Kind of a perfect moment.

    F Torchy's.

So what if they drown in fluids filling their lungs or writhe and diminish in cancer. We don't see it.

They should have taken better care of themselves.  Pull themselves up by their bootstraps.  Cancer is fake news.  Etc. etc.  Don't make Trumpkins choose between their God or anything else -- their children, first responders, the Constitution, the survival of the country.....they'll choose Trumpism.  All the time, every time.  Because look at those libtears.  Buncha pussy snowflakes, shedding tears for dying firefighters and such -- SNOWFLAKES!

  8. I said it before, but it bears repeating.  If you ask yourself the question "How dumb does Trump think the American people are?", the answer is "ALL THE DUMB."  And...he's correct.

Shit, he could have held up a blank piece of paper, said that the parties wrote everything down in lemon juice, and when the time is right, he'll heat the paper up to show the world what it says.  And the American people will swallow that bullshit more easily than Linda Lovelace ever swallowed anything.

We are too stupid to remain a going concern.  Time to file intellectual bankruptcy.  Trump's actually the perfect person to lead us now.

If you don't get a malt at Dirty's, you're doing it wrong. They are one of the few places that actually uses enough malt powder.

It's like you've forgotten everything I've taught you.  "Chocolate malt....extra malt, please."

It might be, no it probably is, the best combination of burger and onion rings.  Dirty's is up there, but man Hut's is the ultimate for both of those on your plate.

The Dirty's burger and rings combo is indeed glorious.

And I know that's not what it's known for, and it's a bit kitschy, but the regular old thick patty grilled cheeseburger with rings at Shady Grove is good stuff.  That burger and rings on the patio, with a cold iced tea, that's a nice afternoon.

But seriously, I'm jonesing for some Huts now, and now I know it's gonna be freaking crowded while everyone tries to get their last fix.  Dammit.

They were out. Of Chili. At the Chili Parlour. And the lady said "we have white chili."

    WTF is "white chili"?

She tells us this.  We sit there dumbfounded.  "So....you're just 'The Parlour?'"

  12. It was both impressive in it's consumption and it made me realize how America is old world now.

After our experience in the store in Montreal, we had that exact conversation.  They were consuming with the gluttony of brand new money.  It was so overwhelming in the shop that my wife looked at me and said "I can't be in here with this, let's go."  It was consumption for the sake of consumption -- they weren't looking at a fur coat that they really liked, deciding to buy it, then carefully packing it for travel back home.  They were literally grabbing armfuls of coats off of racks and shoving them into crates quickly - it almost looked like some sort of game show prize of "you get to keep all the shit you can cram in a box in 90 seconds."

Oh, and as for the Russians....here's some grabs from a couple of years ago.  A comfortable outfit to hike around rocky trails at an Armenian monastary, and the obligatory 5 minutes in front of the Mona Lisa, trying to get the perfect selfie angle:

  13. It is a multiple pronged problem.  Cheaper travel, but also an larger population on the earth, with the largest countries by population (China and India) having a growing Middle Class with disposable income.

    This.

On the Yosemite Valley floor a few years ago...must have been 10k Chinese tourists in various buses. 20 years ago, not that many Chinese could afford to travel. Now...they are fully involved in the conspicuous consumption phase of early capitalism. Hell, we were in a “First Nations” shop in Montreal, and a group of probably 40-50 Chinese tourists were grabbing literal armloads of furs, and jamming them I to wooden crates to ship home.

And in Europe, newly “wealthy” Russians are part of the mix. Seeing more and more of them.

When more of the world can afford to travel, more of the world travels. And it doesn’t take a lot to overwhelm some places.

  14. I like the burgers, not a fan of the half-an-onion onion rings actually. Will hit before they close.

I get that. I dig em. I like both styles - the ones with the more crumbly batter, maybe 1/2 inch thick (shady grove does great ones), and the big slabs. I cut em in half, and they make a nice scoop for some ketchup to go with.

Goddamit. Now I wanna Richie Valens and some rings.

  15. I digress and admit I came across somewhat salty.  But facts remain, "original Austinites" are already overly lamenting their departure despite two things:  not having been there in the better part of a decade and that they aren't noteworthy burgers to begin with.  Now they did make a superlative Rueben.  But again, overshadowed by 37,000 "native (bullshit term that means nothing) Austin residents" claiming it was their favorite, having been there once since Lance Armstrong's first TDF victory.

Ummm....where’s the post above claiming that it was their favorite/best burger ever?

We liked it. Many of us still went from time to time. I was there within the past month. They make a good burger and rings, it’s a good place for a burger downtown. Simple, the kind of good old burger joint many towns have. Losing one like that sucks.

Where are all the sex stories? My college girl friend worked at Steak and Ale during holidays and summers. All she ever talked about was how everyone was sleeping with each other. She was probably the ring leader.

It was 30 years ago for me, but that was definitely the order of the day in the restaurant world.  And there was even cross-pollination -- after shifts ended at a couple of other nearby places, all the waitstaff from the area restaurants would congregate at the place that had the bar open the latest (Bennigans was one of those with a late bar hour).  So the waitstaff from Red Lobster would hook up with people from the Blackeyed Pea and whatnot.  Hormones were high, standards were low, alcohol was flowing.
