God damn. Rhule? A miserable failure? A guy Carolina just paid a shitload of money to not coach their team? What has he done than all the other recent Baylor coaches haven’t?

He failed in the NFL. The vast majority of coaches do. But he was successful at both stops in college and had three 10+ win seasons, which is three more than Sark. Not saying he'd be my first choice, but Saban/Urban/Dabo aren't walking through that door.

Buyout would be roughly $23M if we fired him after the season which is probably beyond our price point. I see us firing him after 2023 or 2024 and restarting the Urban Meyer conversations albeit more seriously this time.

According to this site we would owe him $15.7M at the end of this season. If we lose out and Arch decommits I could see it happening. But the Urban ship has sailed. We'd probably go after Rhule.

I’d settle for 1 CCG every four years. I mean damn, Mack only went to 2 didn’t he?

True, but Mack should've gone to 3 and we were arguably the best team in the country each of those years (definitely in 05, obviously). He also had to share a division with prime Stoops, who owned his ass; despite shitting the bed against OU, I would take those early 00s teams over Herman's CCG team that lost 4 games.

If Herman wasn't a Generational Asshole, he'd still be our coach, and we'd be a lot better football team... The first, for sure, and the second, arguably and in my opinion likely, even if without Ewers.

Eh, he had 4 years and managed 1 CCG appearance.. and we couldn't really bring him back after going all out for Urban. It's hard to say what would've happened if he had NIL money to throw around, but my guess is he'd still be good for at least 2-3 WTF losses every year. Not the guy, but yes, probably better than Mr. 7 Win.

wow, with a backup QB too right? Will OKState completely drop from the rankings?  What a strange game CFB with so much variation in results.

Just hire their entire staff , pay double, they'll come.   You don't need 4 or 5 stars.  IMO, in the modern era, there's very little difference between a 2 or 3 star and a 4 star, the gap has narrowed dramatically from 30-40 years ago when there were legit physical differences. With a 5 star, most of them are rare physical freaks, but generally a CFB game will only have 1 or 2 5 stars combined on both teams. So it's immaterial.  Execution and precision win games these days, it's physical parity just like the NFL.

If you want to actually win anything of significance, you need both.

What the hell are you talking about? Did you miss when both of those dudes were fired? Sark is not untouchable, if he doesn't win he will be gone. Just like every other coach in football.

Re-read the post I was responding to..

I’m not sure what point he’s trying to make or what point he thinks he’s making. It’s very confusing

Sark was a shiny new object, so he can't be fired. Same with Charlie and Herman. But all that really matters is recruiting. Just ask Jimbo.

Reread what I said. We fired him when we did so we could grab Herm before anyone else did. It was a bad plan. We could've waited until the season was over and got someone better. Strong was the new shiny object. Then Herman was the new shiny object. Then Sark was the new shiny object. See where this is going?

Sark was never the shiny new object. He was hired out of left field after we missed on Urban.

This forum is a microcosm of the Texas fan base and is exactly why we keep wandering in the wilderness. I will admit to apologizing for Strong because I thought he would recruit us out of this, but he turned out to NOT be the recruiter he was elsewhere. Herm I hated from day 1 and it had nothing to do with the asshole. However, college football is about recruiting. Guys who can recruit ultimately end up winning. Simple as that. Mack was a solid recruiter year over year. Once his recruiting fell of he was shit. Charlie recruited shit. Tom hit on a couple classes but his attrition was shit. If this guy can continue recruiting well then he will be ok. Despite all the oopinions we are losing because of our shortcomings. We have some talent but we also have some glaring weaknesses. Line depth/experience. Secondary depth. Pass Rush. Receiver depth. Freshman QB. All the problems we knew we had coming in are showing up on Saturdays. Not sure why people are surprised.

So you think Jimbo's gonna turn it around too?

I hated the hire when I heard about it and I hated it even more after last season was over. I don't give a fuck about the booze thing on its own, but I do give a fuck about hiring a guy with no track record of legitimate success in 6 seasons as a P5 HC. Last year's Kansas loss was the worst loss by far of any from Strong, Herman or Sark, imo. After that game, I was convinced we were entering a loser's holding pattern until we could shitcan Sark and move on in 1 or 2 years. While things now seem to be trending up with QE taking snaps, shit also looked bleak a couple of weeks ago.

I'll re-evaluate at the end of the season after I see how we do in true road games against ranked teams (currently ranked, anyways). We played Bama close at home, but aggy played them close on the road, and that team is....aggy. I will admit the smooth buttfucking of OU went a long way in buying Sark some goodwill. I have zero doubt that Sark can call plays, and I have zero doubt that Texas will have continued success with recruiting in today's NIL era (regardless of coach). I still have concerns about Sark having the necessary chops to bring us what we all want. Prove me wrong, Sark.

I felt the same. Hated the hire, and hated it even more up until the last couple weeks. And while I loved every second of 49-0, that OU team is probably worse than any of the shit teams we've fielded over the last 12 years. They're that pitiful. But maybe Sark is the guy. Two weeks ago I would've said no way in hell; now I'd say it's about 50/50. Not a sure thing like some people seem to think after last week, but things appear to be trending upwards. We should know by the end of the season.

  11. I give him credit for turning things around at Temple and Baylor. He's shown he can walk into a complete shitshow and at least make them respectable. But I agree with others in this thread--he's not the sure-fire future Saban/Urban/Dabo that some people make him out to be.

Wow, that an impressive level of dumbassery.  It’s only through tremendous fortune that they stayed in that game.  That Milroe carried the ball like a loaf of bread and their good kicker decided to miss a couple.
As much as that loss wasn’t evidence that Jimbo sucks necessarily, it also wasn’t evidence that he’s any good either.

And if you take competing with Alabama in a game with a terrible performance by a back up QB as evidence that you should “trust in Jimbo” how do you explain away App state?

    They're aggy. It's a low bar.

This is why there is not now, nor has there ever been, anything to fear from aggy.  Five years in and he wouldn’t trade Jimbo for any other corch out there.  I guess I won’t be invited.

  14. OU's proximity to Texas and DFW specifically will prevent them from completely falling off the map like Nebraska. As OP stated, they are basically where we were in Strong's first year--a gutted roster with an incompetent HC. They'll give Venables 2 or 3 years, and then start the process over again. However, it's a tougher rebuild than Texas; I doubt they'll still be able to pull top 10 classes after several seasons of mediocrity.

Good coaching can resurrect any program.

My hope and prayer is that Mickey Joseph wins a few more games and they decide he’s the guy to handle the job. Give me at least 5 more years of Nebraska sucking horribly before they even sniff making the right hire.

Depends on how you define resurrect. Make them respectable? Or make them legit contenders? You need top 5 recruiting classes for the latter. I can't imagine that happening at Nebraska, unless they do something completely outside the box.
