looks like we’re going after priority targets?

how many are there of their own volition? (read: because they took a job that pays them considerably more than they would make elsewhere)
We don’t know. Like I said, I doubt they will tell us directly.

Were they still there because they were reassured by our Govt that the risk of complete collapse was minimal to zero? That’s what some prominent people said pretty explicitly.
Now that the conditions have changed some will be remaining because we are leaving them.

This....THIS is the unspoken next page in the narrative that "we should stay and get everyone out." Without discussing or arguing about what the terms of any agreement between the US and Taliban are, the alternative to an agreement is "no agreement." And "no agreement" almost certainly means fighting. So, the question is not "will the US stay past 8/31 or not?" The question is "is the US prepared to re-engage, send in more troops, and engage in significant combat operations in Afghanistan again?"
If that's the will, so be it. The other side of the calculus is that we have decided to pull out of Afghanistan, and even if this particular version of how we are leaving could and should have been done better, the die is cast -- we are leaving, and we do not intend to sacrifice any additional American soldiers there.
I think that most everyone will concede that there are no great options on the table. And the intellectually honest will concede that once we decided to go all-in in Afghanistan, there were never going to be any great options for how our engagement would end. C'est la guerre.
I guess it’s a numbers game. If there’s 3,000 Americans still in Kabul, is it worth the increased engagement? I mean 3,000 dead Americans is why we’re there in the first place.
Basically any financial, political, or human costs of extricating these people would be consequences of the initial botched withdrawal attempt.

Great so now we will have an uptick in diabeetus and heart disease.
A donut a day keeps the risk of severe illness and death from covid away.

Breakdown?
Who is being evacuated? By whom? How many Americans? How many Americans left?
No estimate on Americans left. I suspect that will be leaked later. No way there will be official statement, “There are an estimated 5,000 Americans still in Afghanistan. They’re in our thoughts.”

Apologies. Is this still happening?
Still one person short. If anybody has a friend that might be interested, ask them.

This new Lorde song has gotten stuck in my head. I like the trippy vibes. Also, the album has one of the most memorable covers in recent history.

Timely
Via SIM Swaps etc.
I found a couple short videos that explain a bit more about self custody. She’s easy on the eyes too.

Yep, going to hear more of these stories.
These stories will get a lot of airtime. Not just because this is an epic clusterfuck, but also because we’ve been there 20 years so there’s that many more veterans and reporters and civilian contractors and intelligence agents with skin in the game. You can’t just sweep this all under the rug with people like yourself.

Just confirming my post from above:
... annnnddd this doesn't seem to be good, even if expected (no one with a brain knows that the logistics and numbers means that they would need more time to locate/evacuate all Amers.):
This is truly incredible.
So @InkaUtexas@MillerEP if you were one of these Americans stranded behind enemy lines how would you try to get out?
Feels like a giant hostage situation incoming.

For those that have wondered, like me, why people were still there despite our announced plans to leave. They have defense contracts. Old article but evidently some projects slated for completion in 2023.

You need to be careful. It feels like you’re close to playing the blame game. Just trying to help out before the hall monitor gets here.

Anyone storing their crypto offline? If so, what method? I’m considering the move as I’m a long-term investor and don’t need to access it anytime soon.
Of course. Not your keys, not your cheese.
I’d encourage everyone that has more than a passing interest to take custody of their own coins. It’s meant to be permissionless and trust minimized. Leaving your coins on exchanges takes all of that away. Also, moving coins into cold storage gives you some technical knowledge about how the tech operates.
The three most common hardware wallets are Ledger, Trezor and the ColdCard.
Ledger and Trezor are pretty similar offerings. They support a lot of coins. I have a couple Nano S wallets from Ledger. The desktop interface is pretty slick and makes it pretty fool proof.
The ColdCard is Bitcoin only and the most secure option. Can be set air gapped, but more tech savviness required.
If you get past that level and want more security for Bitcoin specifically there are a couple companies that offer multisignature (multi-sig) options for Storage. I use Casa but I’ve heard good things about Unchained Capital. They’re based out of Austin and are really the driving force behind the Bitcoin scene that is growing quickly.

I’ve only followed from a distance but some of this stuff is unreal.

My submission sadly would be Taco Cabana. I remember it being good back when I was young. In the Sean Elliott days. Even in college I thought it was fine. The last couple times I've dared to stop there it was God awful.
