  1. Just saw Modest Mouse.  They’re touring on the 20th anniversary of “Good news for people who like bad news”.
Great show…. You know what you’re getting and the crowd energy is right up there.  See them if you can

  2. Got a Combustion probe last xmas and since then the Thermopen has just been sitting in the drawer.  It's just so much better for things that need careful attention like chicken.  I HATE dry food and the combustion lets you know in advance when it will be done.  Game changer IMHO

  3. Welp looks like it's going to be pissing down rain when I'm in town... Guess I'll be buying an umbrella.  In the UK I usually carry a back pack with a rain jacket, phone bank, and a water bottle.   I was hoping to avoid carrying one, because I figured it might be a pain at restaurants, on public transportation, etc.

    1. Any advice re the rain/backpack?
    2. I'm tempted to wear waterproof hiking boots... am I going to get hassled about footwear?  Not planning on going anywhere super fancy, but I have seen dress codes posted for some places (aka No sneakers)

    Question for our Surly Latinos—

If Mexicans/Latinos in America were anti-woman for a president, and those same Mexicans/Latinos love their home country and culture, then why are they so proud of Mexico’s first female president and how did she get elected?

I've had this thought...  and this is where I'm at right now. (And I not just talking about Latinos)  Perhaps the story of America is that people who were NOT successful in their home countries or were so extreme that they needed a fresh start immigrated. They brought their collective disfunction here. (both in the past and present)   My family tree is almost entirely populated by religious zealots, Jacobites kicked out of Scotland by the victorious English, or later in the Highland clearances.   So let's just be honest, these weren't the best and brightest.  They were desperate losers.

People don't uproot their lives and make risky journeys because they have it so good at home and things are great.

So maybe the folks we have here are not of the same caliber and that's why we can't have nice things.

tl/dr Maybe we are the Dunning-Kruger of nations

    Ledge shots anyone?

  5. ROBOT T-0

When a desperate mom and her daughter encounter an outdated robot, T-0, their reluctant alliance becomes their only hope in a world dominated by household robots.

In the near future, robots are in every household, at the service of humans, replacing them in their daily chores.  40 years old Max, unemployed, and her daughter Paula struggle to earn their living.

Great movie, but subtitled.   See it if you get a chance.  I expect it'll end up on Netflix or some other streaming service.
