  1. Anyone doing anything life changing this week?
  2. Normally I'd 100% agree, but this is kind of the thread for it. Astro fans being the "This is fine" dog with the flames everywhere on this thread in order to not have to admit to Rangers fans that this season has been disappointing, is an interesting play. We are all impressed with the machismo.
  3. All very fair and reasonable except for the fact that Astro fans are disappointed to have this team (and especially this manager). As a victim of the success, expectations rightly or wrongly are set very high every year now and this season is a decidedly disappointing one, for a variety of reasons which we are naming. It’s glorious and hilarious and life-giving to watch the Astros tread water in the AL West and it’s especially funny to make fun of David D when he thought the Astros were making their move to take the #1 spot, but then fail. And it’s even funny that the Astros who have sort of beat up on the Rangers this year aren’t gaining ground because they can’t win a series against teams the Rangers have swept. Go Miami lol
  4. AnimalTobacco2 is geared up for when you are ready to try and censor someone for talking about how hilariously big of babies the Astro fans are.
  5. I never once said this was a victory for the fan base, I only mentioned that having a season that most folks think is worse than projected and using gambling website projections to make yourself feel better about it is pathetic. And to my original point, thanks for being honest about your disappointment. Some of that undoubtedly comes from the high expectations from previous successful seasons, so it’s natural. It’s just weird to lie or try and pretend like you aren’t disappointed in this season, especially compared to the TEXAS Rangers season thus far, when it’s obvious you are and should be. You ain’t gotta lie to kick it, Craig. Texas is playing with house money, we are a year ahead of the plan so if we get to the ALDS that’s a win. ALCS is an absolute success. Houston getting a wild card and scraping for life at this point in the season is just a glorious bingo card. Actually fans like David D trying to gas light how sad they are is actually the best part.
  6. Are you saying you aren't disappointed in the play on the field for 100+ games and 5 months thus far? And being behind first place in your division wire to wire thus far? Bless your heart. I thought Astros fans expectations were a little higher than moral victories from gambling website projections, but...well...bless your poor little heart.
  7. Remember that time a few weeks ago the Astros were tied for first with the Texas Rangers for two hours and you were extremely excited about it as if it was the turning point, but it turned out to be the Astros high point of what is a very disappointing season, as the Astros mismanaged the trade deadline and continuously start a black hole in their lineup at a catcher, and anytime they go on a heater, the Texas Rangers (and Seattle Mariners) go on a heater of equal or better length and now the Seattle Mariners are trailing the Astros by as many games as the Astros are trailing the Rangers? Bless your heart.
  8. I mean, as an example: Netflix pays NBC or whomever $500mm to air Seinfeld. Seinfeld creatives owed residuals takes their cut from the $500mm that was paid to NBC or whomever. Why do they still have a double dip claim to take a cut from Netflix as well? That seems duplicative. Netflix paid whomever owns the Suits IP $xxx. Why would they pay residuals when it turns out to be getting a ton of views for the few weeks it's hot?
  9. Exactly this question too. If you wanted a cut, shouldn’t it be a cut from the deal you made and the monies extracted from Netflix?
  10. I wasn’t intentionally ignoring that part— I’m genuinely asking why you think it should work this way still in 2023 you answered, thank you. Admittedly I need to read that answer a few more times to understand it better, because I’m still not actually hearing the logical argument for why residuals are an entitlement in a streaming model considering that residuals were a response and answer to a misaligned value matrix (scarcity of hours on TV/opportunity cost) that no longer exists. At least it no longer exists in the same way. If the argument is boiled down to a simplified emotional one of “mean rich businessmen versus smart cool creatives (which it kinda sounded like with the bread line comment)”, then creatives asking for a cut of everything that’s already been paid for, in my mind, is really no different than turning the iPad around and asking for a tip because it’s been normalized (and your employer isn’t paying you a living wage).
  11. Yea, except when the whole team is playing a stinker and we are down 0-5 in the 8th and he's of course one of the few 1-3 or 2-3.
  12. Yes! Heim is Him. Also I like Sam Huff and see the strong potential he does need some more AAA polish for sure.
  13. From that same piece and to your social media point: Again, though, scarcity in terms of distribution is now gone; the only scarce resource on the Internet is consumer time and attention, and commanding that is far more difficult and risky. Look no further than the deteriorating financial condition of most of Hollywood: not only are the studios competing with Netflix and Amazon and Apple, but also with things like YouTube and social media. Indeed, you could very easily make the case that a far more legible labor action would be for the studios to lock out the talent in an attempt to remove residualscompletely, given how much more risk any content producer is taking on today. This angle is, obviously, a non-starter, but it does point at why these negotiations are likely to be so fraught: actors and writers are angling to get a larger share of revenue that they arguably no longer deserve.
  14. Give me your best argument for why it should work besides "it's always been that way", especially considering it wasn't until the 1960's that residuals came to be. I say that because what I've read is:
  15. Saw this with the kids. It’s a cute movie, leaned way more into the comedy and the turtles feel more like kids and tweens (early teens at best). Lots of laughs and loved the He-man meme song and didn’t even distract that April O’Neil reimagined as a pear-shaped BIPOC (versus hot white chick), because this is probably more accurate of an average NYer.
  16. Not sure what to think of this. A guy in my neighborhood a couple of doors down started mowing his lawn at 6:20am. I get the Texas summer is brutal. I get the impulse to mow your lawn at sunset and dawn, the lowest the temp will be while having light. But is that a violation of the neighborhood social contract to be respectful and honor a “quiet hours” period? Edit to add: He’s probably late 50’s/early 60’s in age, if that matters for heat/health danger.
  17. If nothing else, this has become the most eclectically interesting thread on DT in years.
  18. The first time I saw that meme was @bad_teammate, so I guess that was my miracle year. Honestly though, and one of the reasons I posted this in earnest, is because I feel like I haven’t had one and I’m missing out on an amazing, transformative and exponentially valuable year. And wanted to hear about yalls and get some ideas.
  19. I’m not sure what that meant, but thanks for your contribution to this thread at least! Also didn’t realize this was such a long OP; maybe I should go back and edit it down some for folks who come to message boards to not read but to just repeat, ad nauseam, the same things for months and even years on end.
  20. I go to Christian brothers automotive exclusively and feel they are fair and honest and do great work. And supporting a Christian business, it’s a win/win.
  21. Awesome and congrats on the good energy! Question for you and Hank: I read today that House of Dragons (the GoT/HBO big budget thing) had been filming and is currently filming, etc. via some loophole that it's in UK. How can that be? Isn't that a little chickenpoop of them to do this during the strike? I feel like I've heard about a lot of loopholes the last 100 days and it doesn't strike me (no pun intended) as all that honorable or just. Your thoughts?
  22. I was reading an interesting bio of Isaac Newtown, famous for having his annus mirabilis or "miracle year" in 1666 when he came up with integral calculus and what would become his theory of gravity and just generally laying the foundation for much of what would come by way of natural philosophy, mathematics and science for the next 300+ years, and it got me to thinking-- when was my miracle year? Or have I yet to have one. It is described he had the wild energy one has when passionately motivated and excited for their ventures-- whether it be striking gold or oil or working on a math problem-- and hardly slept that year with all the activity and work he was doing. What was your miracle year like that set your life on the upward and positive direction? What did your miracle year look like that you were inspired and motivated and given the energy to accomplish all on your plate (and more!) as if that time was bestowed by God himself to springboard your life? It maybe a PhD or night law school or even an invention. It may be that start-up you founded and sold for millions or raised money for and ran. It may be that year you published your first book or sold your first painting in a gallery. It may be that year you worked to get partner at the firm or juggling infants and children while trying to grow your career. Who knows I'm sure it's different for us all, it's just that year you can look back on and say, "Wow, that was a lot of work and effort but boy did it pay off and I don't think I can ever replicate that again, but I can point to my successes having their germ in the work and activity undertook in that year, that annus mirabilis"
