I agree with the liberal arts guys here.

All engineering disciplines pretty much attract a certain kind of myopic person who can't see how a broader education can give the tools that allow for folks to grow outside of a college setting and thereby help them in problems that can't be taught in a classroom.

Other than my Chemical Engineering degree of course as its the hardest discipline that only a select few can get through.

ChE is all wheat and no chaff.

But their sentiment pretty much rings true for all the other engineering degrees.

    Same except civil.

Who am I kidding, I’m too dumb for thermodynamics.

I’d like to hear how a temporary government shutdown causes irreparable damage, especially to the market. The whole debt ceiling thing I can see. Once you default a line has been crossed. Temporary shutdown just doesn’t move the needle to me. And it hasn’t historically.

Irreparable is moving goalposts, but sure I’ll play along.  No paychecks for active duty military, no economic data reporting, additional fodder for credit agencies who worry about debt, spending, and lack of will to tackle either… But I think it’s a fun time for the let it all burn folks.

    Idk. You tell me.

What is negative about a government shutdown from a market standpoint?

Political uncertainty? That’s a stretch. Hasn’t seemed to matter.

Any missed government spending from a prolonged shutdown is always made back up.

It’s the definition of a nothingburger.

Until it isn’t.  But nonchalance toward dysfunction is exactly what begets black swans.

  4. Newsome hopefully does better with this pick than with Harris’ replacement.  Regardless of Feinsteins decline, and it was precipitous, she was a pretty powerful voice for California.  Going from two leading senators to two lightweights would not be ideal.

nope. second leg of a flight and for some reason (part delirium) i saw it and said fuck it lets watch this. . . It has changed how I view life. It moved me and I could not help myself getting chocked up watching it.

Really, what is important when we are gone? what do we leave behind? what matters?

Wouldn’t have watched this but for the recommendation but it was great.  Bill Nighy has always been fantastic in anything he’s been in, and the length was spot on.  Thanks for the suggestion.  It does make you think of legacy in a slightly different way.

  6. Out of curiosity, how many states do we have representing on surly now?  A lot of Colorado and SoCal folks from what I’ve seen, plus I know we have a few New Mexico and NY people.

Some very close friends of mine just sold their house in Westlake and are moving to Rhode Island.  Beautiful place but not my kind of place, way too crowded.  When we visited Yale and Brown (now that is a weird school) I thought Providence was beautiful.

One friend of mine will never move out of Texas due to family and his wife’s work, but all my other friends are looking for exits.  It’s crazy.

  7. It’s kind of interesting being alone when my wife and son are gone in college visits.  It’s a little bit of a preview of empty nest time.

I am planning on working about half time and volunteering a couple of days a week, and my wife is going back to work part time and continuing to volunteer (different organizations).

I enjoy being alone and being able to do what I want but I think personal interaction is absolutely necessary for people.  I force myself to get it regardless.

My last day Corebridge was today.   Shipped my laptop back to them this evening.

    • 11 years and 8 months with the same company.
    • Three corporate rebrandings during that time.
    • 5 jobs and 4 promotions.
    • 306 other jobs applied for since August of 2022.
    • 8 interviews so far.

The depressing thing about those application/interview numbers is that from what I hear from my HR friends, those numbers are fairly normal.  Not quite a 3% hit rate.

I'm looking forward to Monday though.   I'm going to start my day like I always do by taking the dog for a walk.   Then I'll log onto my personal laptop and do a little surfing with some job hunting.   Then, after lunch, I'll take a nap.   Sure is a good thing I stopped drinking last year.  I'm sure that would be a great way to be unemployed.

Depending on how I budget, my severance would cover expenses until May or June of next year.   But it would be primo to find something before the end of the year.

Sorry to hear that man.  I have been following this quietly.  Layoffs really suck and right now isn’t a great time to be looking, except a few really specialized professional specialties.

Keep after it and hook ‘em.
