For me, it's a song about not backing down from the assholes. Persevering, standing on principle ... but much of the fun is what it means to others. I listened to all four of @Iceman's contributions above and there's less of that and a lot more . But I think the Willie Nile song from @G650 is a little more FAFO-for-everybody vibe -- a little less in someone particular's face. But I missed some of the lyrics on my first go-round and there doesn't seem to be a good place to find them right away. I'm sure they're out there somewhere, so I'll probably run over to evil Spotify and see if they've got 'em posted (not my streaming choice -- it's for our kids, so I got the family plan; their reliance on Spotify may be my biggest failure as a parent, but fortunately, they've got a lot more good points than bad).

Sounds like these games are supposed to be free. I'll believe it when I see it, but I'd pay for them anyway. "The change to Victory+ (https://victoryplus.com/) will be the first time all of the Texas High School State Football Championships will be available for free and outside the cable bundle that was the main distribution platform for the Regional Sports Network model who was the carrier for the last 3 decades." Kind of an odd news release. It's from DCTF, and it says they "brokered" the deal.

Hallelujah for all of us out-of-staters who don't want to get satellite, which I believe has been the only way to access these games for several years now. Could be wrong, but I certainly haven't been able to purchase whatever regional service would let me get the games. Haven't heard of these guys before, but happy they're doing this. Seems it may be attached to Dave Campbell's. https://www.texasfootball.com/article/2025/06/10/victory-uil-football-dave-campbells

Yeah, I'm actually kind of worried about that, too. I don't come to this particular forum as much as I could, or would like to, and partly because of that. There's a hell of a lot of great threads on this one and I've enjoyed a few new things, but it's a little too easy just to click on a video and suddenly find my wife hollering at me from next Tuesday. See above. I don't know, but I'm probably going to be late for dinner just clicking on your links. Not much of a metal guy myself, but I can appreciate it. Sorta like IPAs for you.

That's a bad-ass song, but not it. Thanks for posting it. Yeah, only one song of his on that particular playlist. I'm a little old-school on playlists -- it's always stuff I own, at least digitally, and I was rather late to discover Willie Nile, so I've only got a couple of his albums. I'm at the point of not being able to manage all my music easily, or listen to it enough. So I don't buy a lot any more, but that's an album I'm going to have to listen to thoroughly. Good stuff, @G650.

Some folks in my neck of the woods have been a real pain in the ass for the last six to eight years for me and my colleagues. Serious needs-to-be-investigated stuff, and we've barely gotten started. Of course I've got a playlist that I've put together to help me through, and about half of them are good "bring it" songs. Heard the one above about the time it came out and it's been a favorite ever since, but Largo is a project I'd never heard of until about four years ago. Apparently that album was one musicians everywhere raved about. Among the folks who've covered "Gimme A Stone" are Roger Daltrey and Little Feat. Pretty impressive bunch of contributing musicians, including Joan Osborne, Carole King, Taj Mahal, and Willie Nile, among others. No official video, but here's Levon Helm and David Forman seeing the Largo version, along with lots of cheesy illustrations: What are your "bring it" songs? Bonus: I'll buy a beer at your favorite brewpub for whoever first posts the Willie Nile song I've got on my playlist.

Beer 2025: sith_horn drinking more than the rest of us combined

Couple of IPAs that guys brought back from their travels -- Devil Anse (Greenbrier Valley Brewing Co., Maxwelton, WV; 6.9 ABV, 71 IBU) and Slow Train (Marshall Brewing, Tulsa; 7.0 ABV, no IBU listed). I thought both were a little less hoppy and aromatic, but my taster may be off a bit after too many days of being irritated by wildfire smoke coming down from Canada. -

Did a doubletake on viewing that flight and googled Jellyfish Day (never been to Pinthouse either, but I've seen previous EJ discussion on this thread). Assume this is one of the guided flights ... @hacker, that flight probably won't bring either @Iceman or @sith_horn into the IPA fold, but what did you think? -

Never too late. Also not too late for a "just got off the road, need to unwind" Nice Things hazy from Central Waters. Perfect, as any beer would be, for watching a replay of Texas winning the softball CWS. -

Rebel Kent amber (3 Sheeps) from Howie's, a classic U. Of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus dive. Day 1 of two at the state HS track meet. 3:30 p.m., so one of the few times there's room. Still a session going on, but full of fans. By 5 it will be packed with families and competitors. -
This thread has inspired me to start gathering data for my next scholarly journal article (planning to submit to the Annals of Improbable Research). Preliminary title: "Give a shit vs. Give 'em shit: Franchise quality and service disparities in McMansionville." Which neighborhoods should I visit? How much must I eat? Does the number of A&M graduates behind the counter make a difference? What other factors should I consider? I welcome all methodology suggestions and other advice. Edit: And in a serendipitous coincidence, the current edition of the annals just happens to be titled ... p.s. feel free to derail thread even further by letting me know whether "serendipitous coincidence" is redundant. Or not.

Surly 101. Self-deprecation when things count. Claim all the glory for something done on page 27 of 31 in an eight-month-old catastrophe. Also Texan to the core ... well done.

Used to be consistently cheap and good. It's been a while, but the last few times I went, it seemed overpriced and dried-out. There was a time, before the advent of Starbucks, that McDonald's was the one place where you could find reliably tasty (for the time) coffee. On long trips within Texas or on the interstates, it was a lifesaver. Coming back one morning from camping in Big Bend, I swore undying loyalty to the franchise after hitting the McD's in Fort Stockton. But now that high-quality, fresh-ground coffee is easier to find than fake boobs in Hollywood, I can say, "I've changed, baby. You've stayed the same."

She really did seem like a good person, but relationships will make a mess of folks. What did your wife think of her?

Man, what's with all that paper stuff, @TreatyOak? Did you forget your iPad every time you went out into public or something?

One of the neighbors went to Indy for the race over Memorial Day and brought back some Off Square Brewing imperial stout (Scientific Calculation, 10 percent ABV) from Crown Point, Indiana. If you like coffee and stout, this is your beer. One of the stronger coffee-tinged stouts I've had and I liked it fairly well, considering it's not the season. This is all that was left from one shared can at happy hour, but I scrounged a little more from a second. -
I kinda like @Darth Tron's Jim Edmonds story (although that seems more "encounter" than "brush") and @Foosters' Herm Edwards anecdote. But, yeah, mine was potentially more "interesting" in some ways. Piper was clearly intelligent and capable, and I've always had a thing for brunettes. She eventually became an an attorney in Houston. But her divorce from Jablin and other stuff seemed to have a devastating impact on her. edit: Just read @Dennis Taylor's story, too. That's a fine one. It's telling that we tend to use "brush" as an indicator of potentially negative or clearly negative interactions. Brushes with death, the law, and infamy are only slightly removed from fame on many occasions. Probably one of the reasons we watch stories like Johntay Cook's so closely. @Boko Bevo's story shows us how little we really know about the circumstances of people's lives at times.

I wouldn't recognize 99 percent of celebrities if their publicists beat me up (although I'd recognize @TreatyOak if he had to be the enforcer). But the first interview I did at UT was with Darrell Royal in his office after he became AD; was there because, surprisingly enough, nobody else on the Cactus yearbook staff wanted to do the interview. DKR got a phone call he had to take while answering questions, so while waiting, I just looked around his office at the pictures of him hanging with LBJ and golfing with Willie. When he got off the phone, he said, "Sorry. That was Bart Starr." I also went out once with former Cactus staffer Piper Rountree, convicted of murdering former UT professor Fred Jablin. I was an awkward guy, and I'm kinda glad for that.

Does anybody remember jumptheshark.com? (Title of Reddit post about the defunct website, where folks went to discuss pop culture's shark-jumping absurdities.) It seems that site was bought by TV Guide ... so if you type in jumptheshark.com, it now takes you straight to TV Guide. Glad I missed that site. And just to keep this thread from derailing further -- I came here to figure out what's going on with the Director's Cup -- here's a link back to Texassports.com and today's schedule, which is what I usually visit when I'm having issues getting YouTube or ESPN+ to start my Longhorn baseball or softball games properly. Ready for some baseball and cup drama.

I'm not giving up on either baseball or softball, although I sensed impending doom for softball all the way up to Kavan's final strikeout yesterday. OU is still the team to beat, but if the Horns can pull that off, it will be glorious. Feeling better about them now than the baseball team. The UTSA loss last night is a head-scratcher. Today is suddenly more interesting in an annoying way, and I'm still looking for full projections on the cup, which is even more annoying. I'm guessing the Horns get it together, but they've been living on the edge way too much the last few weeks. Also learned that "Happy Days" and the Fonz are the reason we say "jumping the shark." I'm gonna throw that term out for further deliberation at this afternoon's happy hour, where we regularly jump the shark in our attempts to entertain ourselves. No surprise for a bunch of opinionated guys with a cooler of beer.

According to the OM beer listing page, those are regular, light, and an NA option that says "near beer" on the can. So the answer to your question appears to be "no." -

My neighbor, a retired school superintendent who's had his share of midwestern beer -- especially during his early teaching days in Minnesota and the Dakotas -- swears by Grain Belt as not just a budget option, but a solid beer. -
https://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/2025/05/28/alex-foster-dies-shooting-baylor-football-st-joseph-catholic-greenville/83900680007/ Very surprised there's been nothing posted about this. Read about it three nights ago while taking part in the schizophrenic post about Johntay Cook, and it seemed a little inappropriate to bring it up there, or even on a separate post. But I still see no mention of this anywhere on the forums, if my searching skills were adequate. Only a few posts on the recruiting board during the time when Texas was apparently pursuing Foster. I always tell my students all death is tragic and not to use the term in a news obituary unless quoting someone. But when a guy this young dies this way, regardless of who he plays for, it is always just that. Apparently he would have been heading back to school for the summer this weekend, and that makes it even worse. RIP, Alex.

Did she let you play "dookie?" There is a beer named Not A Scrabble Valid Word, made by Lupulin out of Big Lake, Minnesota. I've had Lupulin's Fashion Mullet NEIPA and thought it was pretty good. And Shiny Brewery in Derbyshire, England, makes one called Scrabble Rouser. Gotta like that one for the name.
