Literally, there could be tons of reasons that could cause him to be a conscientious objector.

He was going to be a doctor, literally one of the only jobs in the military where you help people heal instead of help kill them. What is he objecting to? This screams dumb ideology, and the fact he is sideways with his (military) family is another red flag. Has he told you specifics as to his reasoning why he flaked out? It seems there are large chunks missing as to his thought process, if there was any. If you won't miss the cash, sure, roll the dice, but it seems like a gamble with bad odds. Good luck.

This is the first time I've had a check engine light come on on 10 years.  I seem to recall on one of the old sites that taking it to Autozone, O'Reilly, etal was a pointless endeavor.  I'd like to have an idea as to what's going on before taking it to a mechanic because I don't have one that I know well in this area yet.

You don't want a dedicated scanner tool. You want an OBD2 bluetooth dongle and the Torque app. Leave the dongle plugged in and check everything from your phone, erase codes, use it as a heads up display on the windshield. All kinds of cool stuff.

I've had this version for about 5 years and it was money well spent. I use Torque on an Android too and it's great.

Don't count out Alison Brie - she's building up a helluva resume, going back to Mad Men.

Still cannot believe Marvel picked the wrong Brie for Captain Marvel. Brie Larson is a good actress, but Alison Brie would have truly killed it in that role. Big miss imo. Fyi Larson is in Community episodes 4-8, 5-6, 5-9,  where she plays Abed's girlfriend/interest.

The "This is important" said in what seems to be a sarcastic manner. Just see that as not the way to frame the importance of either a day in support of NBA etc or CV19. If it is just a pool party at Coach Herman's house then sure, either of the two cases I mention I see it as a little insulting.

He sounds like he's full of shit and a moron.  My advice is not to screw with the government as once you're on their radar it is almost impossible to get off even if you do everything above board.

No "wild" speculation, the real Sonny & anyone who follows recruiting knows exactly what that means. Turner fits the prototype sec covets within their "gentleman" agreement. 5 star lineman with multiple influencers who are listening, those kids attract the best offers. They're telling us that if we win & our DL eats we can land him. If not, then he'll make the easy choice, not have to play school and have support from those around him.

And/Or that the Brocks are actively negative recruiting him

I found the flow data from the stock 5.3 head. If I apply the math, I don't see how I'm going to get ant more HP out of these heads. The engine components seem really well matched.

Found this. I'm sure LS6 heads are better, but the stock heads are not bad.

You should be able to easily get another 15-30 horsepower with a mix of cam/flash/exhaust on the stock heads. You may need to use higher octane, but I doubt it. If you're going to tear it down and don't mind changing to LS6 heads, I'm sure you can get more. I've heard good things about HP Tuners for engine management if you want to change and want more control. Porting the stock heads should do the trick as well.

    2) Get OEM (or better) parts from Rockauto (I paid $17 for a knock sensor from Rockauto, not knowing I needed two for this vehicle. To buy the second, Autozone wanted $65. The dealer price was $112). I use the savings from ordering online to upgrade to a higher quality part. I learned my lesson the hard way. Don't use autostore name brand parts unless you are really in a bind. Especially for anything electronic.

Don't use Dorman knock sensors (or anything) as they have a bad rep. The knock sensors have a rep for going out as they like to trap moisture in the recessed holes they screw into, I've already had mine done too.

    5) When your vehicle throws a code, go to the generic retail auto parts store closest to you and have them use their scan tool to give you a print out of what is wrong. Go home and google the vehicle description and code. Price parts. Then evaluate your options.

You can get a wireless Bluetooth or wifi OBS code reader dongle that will connect to your phone. If you use an android you can use Torque for free to read your codes and see engine parameters in real time. I got a generic OBD Bluetooth wireless dongle for $10-15 five years ago off ebay and it is the best money I've ever spent. Borescope cameras that connect to your phone are dirt cheap ($10-20) too.

Polishing oxidation off plastic lenses isn't difficult in the least.

Sams will polish the lenses and put on a protective coating for $35 with a warranty last I checked. They are lazy and you'll need to make an appointment so YMMV. If your housings are too damaged you can buy new housings off Rockauto or Ebay cheap too.

What did you do to rebuild the alternator?

Texas Alternator Starter Service in Austin rebuilt it. It cost just barely more than an autozone Gold rebuild and I wanted to keep the original part seeing as it lasted so long.

I pretty much agree with your research and don't disagree with anything. I've been meaning to get my oil analyzed and may go ahead and do it next time I get it changed. My biggest problem recently was a persistent cold start lifter knock but pandemic speeding and the higher highway rpms have really quieted it down (I think). I'm pretty sure when she dies it will be because of a collapsed lifter, a wiped cam lobe, or the rings. Still love this truck.

If you are losing oil pressure and there are no visible oil leaks on the side of the engine, the main bearings have probably lost some tolerance.   Those Gen III LS units are hard to beat.

What is the first sign of an oil pump failure? Will the pump give me warning by noticeably lower output over time (similar to an alternator slowly wearing out and giving warning because the lights are all dimmer) or will it be an "oh shit, I have a problem" situation like when a water pump seal starts leaking all over the ground?

    Solid advice in the thread.

I retired your same vehicle (2000 Silv, 5.3) with 316K miles. (second vehicle).    Engine and transmission were fairly solid till the end.  Did develop seal leaks and the low oil pressure at idle described in link above which I chose not to repair.   No oil pump or bearing failure.    Just monitor the oil pressure gauge.

Heads up, the LS' are known for the oil pickup tube o-ring to harden so that it loses pressure at idle. A cheap and easy fix only needing to drop the pan to get to it. YMMV of course.

As to OP, I would drive it in the ground including rebuilding the trans as long as you plan on keeping it for a while. If the engine eats a cam, a bearing, or the rings give out, I would probably lean towards a rebuild from a reputable shop that warranties their work and would upgrade the cam and valve springs including a re-flash to get around 325 hp. The cam and springs are the bottle neck as the stock Vortec heads are pretty good.

2000 Silverado Z-71 with 235k on the original engine and trans here. Just rebuilt the original alternator. They don't make them like that any more.

It absolutely would. Here's what some of this could look like by 2050:

    https://www.nationalgeographic.com/climate-change/how-to-live-with-it/crops.html

The geography is already changing. Crops that used to do well in certain areas are seeing lower yields. Crops that used to not grow well or even be tenable in certain areas are now being seen as decent alternatives. (Quick example here https://www.wri.org/blog/2018/08/thanks-climate-change-oranges-are-becoming-new-coffee-some-parts-costa-rica)

Even with moderate predictions, by 2100 the agricultural geogrpahy of the world as we know it will be very different - not accounting for changes in how crops are grown (but even when accounting for some of those changes). I.e. if you are looking at the status quo in 2020 of how agriculture is practiced around the world, the same methods will be achieving wildly different results 80 years from now.

Obviously a lot of this - including the climate science itself - is unpredictable - but making the claim that regions that were once too cold or arid to grow certain crops could in the future become "breadbaskets" (to use the term that was presented) is supported pretty well as far as what we are already seeing and what climatologists are predicting for the future.

Even if climate change is that big of a weather change, does it affect logistics or politics enough in that area? Will rivers appear or trains reach close enough? The Smithsonian map you linked doesn't show any effect in the Yukon regardless.

I think you missed the part where he's talking about 80 years from now. You know, once Florida's melted into the ocean.

Climate change wouldn't affect the climate enough to change the point I was making and wouldn't change the logistic and political situation at all. Only the ability to sell products in the dollar (succession) would change much. I'm not an expert of course.

The Yukon is opening up farmland. The breadbaskets by 2099 will be in Western Canada and Siberia. Getting expensive in the Yukon already.

Really? Canada is limited by logistics and climate. You can only have two crops at most before winter and what is grown is limited by expensive and bottle-necked transport out of the country. It is beautiful country, but absent succession to the US, I would hesitate to think it is another bread basket. In addition the federal government will have to heavily tax the western provinces to pay for the growing social spending of the urban centers. Peter Zeihan has some interesting thoughts on Canada's vulnerability if it interests you.

I don't think there's any DL on the roster who's been in the program for a year or more who's looking at Alfred Collins and Broughton, or even Moro and Sweat and saying to themselves "you know, I think I like my chances at playing time better once these new guys get some more experience, time with McKnight, and a good extra year on the school's nutrition program."

Maybe whoever it is will use this redshirt so that they can grad transfer next year, thereby not having to sit out a year post transfer?

  16. Azul Tequila next to Target on Ben White. A great Tex-Mex and Interior place with a great Tequila selection, I love the Enchiladas Pipian which has a pumpkin mole sauce. The owners also own Papalote Tacos which is a great authentic Taco place.
