  1. That would suck. Hope they man up and toss you all in the water. Every man for himself.
  2. Are there any half IM considered "good" vs. shitty. I live in Houston so Galveston would make the most sense. But the prospect of an 18 mph headwind scares me. I should also mention that I'm in a low key cold war with my wife over excessive cardio. I can tell she doesn't exactly think 15 hours a week on a bike is reasonable, with the kids and sports and all. At the same time, I'm not out boozing, drugging, chasing girls or golfing, so she usually leaves me alone. I've already tried to float the idea of vacationing somewhere to run a marathon and she was not exactly a big fan. All this to say, it's going to take some craftsmanship to (1) get a tri bike, and (2) enter a race that requires travel. I could drive to galveston the morning of and come home after, or stay at friend's beach house. But flying to California because the breeze is nice is probably going to be a no-go.
  3. Think he’s saying with a bunch of slower folks DNF’d, he’s lower among the finishers. Just a false data point.
  4. I’m going to sign up. So I can play with the cool kids. Congrats - muscling into the wind at 16 mph for 10 miles sounds terrible. Must have been fun.
  5. I’m heading out to do 60 on the bike. I’ll be thinking about you when I’m done and realize there’s no way my legs could handle jumping right into a HM.
  6. Well that fucking sucks. Makes me feel whiny about carrying around a bad knee.
  7. Good luck! Haul ass!
  8. Good luck? Do you have target paces for bike and run? (Swim wouldn't mean anything to me). And did you do a full 58/13 brick before? If not, how close?
  9. Aussies has been south of Town Lake since at least 1998.
  10. Good luck, we're all counting on you. And where the fuck are you? That doesn't look like MDAnderson's main campus. And, not to get your hopes up, but some solid tumors are pussies and tend to wither and die in response to chemo. Noticeable shrinkage is a great sign if we're talking cancer and not genitals.
  11. I went through the ringer and MDAnderson and did a clinical trial. But multiple docs thoroughly explained the standard of care (i.e., the normal. accepted treatment protocol for my type and stage of cancer) and how the trial deviated from it. (BTW, my trial was to use extra chemo instead of radiation to avoid some potentially horrifying side effects of radiation). Pretty sure that's part of informed consent, which is required.
  12. The Texans are about the stupidest franchise they can can be. That makes them o ly the second stupiedst franchise in Texas because Jerry Jones won’t die. But fuck them too.
  13. Stutter step didn’t help.
  14. They will give you ativan in your chemo drip if you ask. You def want that.
  15. Unless he’s retired the port surgeon sings the whole time. He’s pretty good.
  16. I first saw this guy's name a few months ago because he has a bunch of KOMs next to my neighborhood. I found his "rode the Tour de France" credentials to be acceptable.

You know anecdotes don't make for good science, right? People are different, yes, but there's general rules that generally apply.

Definitely not easy, but both can be done and are done every day.

You’re saying it’s largely not a choice because Americans are not genetically capable of escaping a fat culture of eating like shit? You’ve identified the obvious problem but find the obvious solution out of reach?

Pretty sure you can read between the lines and say being fat is a choice for most people. Which seems accurate considering like half the population is fat. There are some people who are medically fat but operating at a calorie deficit is going to cause you to lose weight. Like Pearland, I also went from fat to running marathons. If you’re looney enough you can cardio yourself skinny so long as you don’t eat like a total slob.

The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was consecutive high liver enzymes in my blood work at 45. Doc was like, “that’s not right, we need to test you for hepatitis.” And I was, “nah, I lack formal medical training but I’ve got this bad boy figured out.” I also had high blood pressure going back a few years. All those health concerns were gone within a few months.

I had forgotten but started this thread in 2021 as a daily drinker after watching a tub of goo use his finger to scrape nacho cheese from a batting helmet. At the time I was about 225, which at 6’ required a bit more than the 20 pounds I thought I needed to drop. I’m now 170 with about 12% body fat and 80% of that weight loss was from cutting out alcohol. It’s really, really hard to overcome that 500 plus calories per day daily drinking adds. I couldn’t really make a dent in it for 15 years with diet and exercise. Quit drinking and lost 50 pounds in six months. And the shitty thing I knew damn well the drinking was the main problem but convinced myself there was a workaround in there if I kept trying. On a more positive note I’m getting ready to go to Brenner’s Steakhouse with a 3000 calorie deficit for the day so it’s ribeye and potatoes and dessert.
