  1. Shot up a bunch of Catholic school kids at their Wednesday mass. 2 dead. Add the Facebook thoughts and prayers to the thoughts and prayers they were doing as they were shot. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/08/27/us/minneapolis-church-shooting An assailant fired a rifle through the windows of a Catholic church in Minneapolis where students were celebrating their first Mass of the new school year on Wednesday, killing an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old in the pews and injuring 17 others, the police said. The attacker then died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the rear of the church, the Minneapolis police chief, Brian O’Hara, said at a news conference. Of the 17 people injured, 14 were children, the chief said. Two were in critical condition, he said. The shooting, at about 8:30 a.m. Central time, took place at the Annunciation Catholic Church, which has a school for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade. Monday was the first day of school, and the all-school Mass on Wednesday is an annual tradition. Investigators have identified the attacker as Robin Westman, 23, who is believed to have been a former student at the school, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. The suspect’s mother is a retired school employee, the official said. Ellie Mertens, 25, a youth minister at the church, said she was sitting with children in the pews when bullets started ripping through the windows. The shooting lasted for about 2 minutes, she said. “I was just feet away from this window where it was,” Ms. Mertens said in an interview. “The pew saved my life.” Chief O’Hara said that at least two doors of the church had been barricaded from the outside. The shooter, who was in his early 20s, also fired a shotgun and a pistol, he said. “Children are dead, there are families that have a deceased child; you cannot put into words the gravity, tragedy or absolute pain of the situation,” Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis said at the news conference. Mr. Frey, a vocal advocate for stricter gun laws, added: “Don’t just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying.” Here’s what else to know: Witness accounts: Inside the Hennepin County Medical Center emergency room, where multiple victims were taken, Za’khia Jones, 29, was with her fiancée when she saw children who appeared to be bloody being rushed in. “One kid came in and they had rushed her into a room and she was just screaming she didn’t want to die,” Ms. Jones said in an interview. Read more › Minnesota violence: The attack was the fourth deadly shooting in the city in just over 24 hours. And the Twin Cities area was rattled in June when a gunman assassinated a state lawmaker and her husband and left another lawmaker and his wife hospitalized with gunshot wounds, setting off a two-day manhunt. Governor responds: Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota expressed support for the school community in a statement. “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence,” Mr. Walz said. Trump: President Trump spoke with Mr. Walz by phone, a White House official said. Mr. Trump wrote on social media that the White House would continue to monitor the situation, and later signed a proclamation ordering that flags nationwide be lowered to half-staff until Sunday in tribute to the victims.
  2. Boo. Lutkenhaus signs with Nike. Good for him, of course, but his UIL days are over. I was looking forward to seeing him be a 4x gold medalist in the 800. https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a65881486/cooper-lutkenhaus-professional-contract-nike/
  3. i think it is just cro-magnon marketing. go look at public issue polling on wanting someone that "gets things done" "cuts through red tape" "is a strong leader." those always poll high.
  4. that was surprising. it looked like he took every conceivable precaution.

  7. expert witness work? then someone just give him $5 to say our side is right.
  8. the problem with the right wing is they spend all their time devoted to ideology in order to avoid accidentally feeling empathy for their victims. look, i'm sorry that the kids are going to starve, but we can't afford to teach fourth graders they can rely on handouts. look, no one likes school shootings, but that's the price we have to pay to keep from having an oppressive government appear. then when their ideology is violated, they just stop caring about that ideology at all. oppressive government? c'mon, its just a few unmarked police stooges jumping out of cars grabbing people off streets and taking them to something that is explicitly a concentration camp, fully videoed so that there is no doubt about the factual accuracy of this claim, directly at the request of the president to have national troops patrolling the streets. a little oppression is the price we have to pay to keep from not having a little oppression. the whole 'leopards eating faces' thing is complete bullshit. it will never happen to them. all they have to do is say i ❤️ dear leader and they will always be safe from the oppression; in fact, they will be rewarded. and because they have all the empathy squished out of them, everything is totally fine. all at the low low price of giving up on any of the principles set forth 250 years ago.
  9. I hate uptalkers. Welcome to the University of Austin. My name is Meg. I’m excited to show you our campus.
  10. linkedin is an unmitigated hellscape in any event, but made worse by the use of this AI art everywhere. i hate the look of it. i hate the subtlety of it that closely mirrors that onion political cartoon guy.
  11. which is interesting because texas wasn't uniformly garbage back then. if you look at the civil rights act votes, the senate voted in a hilarious fashion: exactly every single "confederate" senator voted no and exactly every single non-confederate voted yes, except Texas's own Ralph Yarborough.
  12. also true. didn't want to lose the thread of this topic, but complaints about the difficulties of facilities you have to deal with in Eanes is something you should keep to yourself.
  13. my sunk cost fallacy is strongest the costier the sunkness is. i've got one stock that is down 94%. at that point, i'm like, who cares if i ride it to zero? selling now gets me nothing. at least it is a lottery ticket for turning around at this point. tomorrow when it is down 95%, i'll think that even more.
