CC --> Mathis (Butters) --> one of the SA Joints (highly recommend Reese Bros) --> Fredericksburg (Eaker BBQ) --> Abilene (The Shed was an honorable mention)
the other way which is SA to Kerrville to Junction then North doesn't show anything.
you could also do CC --> Mathis --> San Antonio --> Austin (any number of suggestions but if you go DONT MISS LEROY AND LEWIS, you also go through Cedar Park so you can hit up Interstellar ) --> Lampasas (Youngs BBQ, haven't been there since they moved from San Saba but are good folks and serve good Q) --> Abilene (The Shed was an honorable mention)
very important to mention that timing matters. how many days are you wanting to split this up across?

I support this message, but with a correction:

Butters is in Sinton (moved from Mathis maybe a year ago?).

  2. My wife and I are leaving the woods of the Great White North and heading to Texas to spend Thanksgiving with my mom.  We're hitting Corpus Christi to visit some friends on the front end of the trip and then heading for Abilene.  Good BBQ is nonexistent where we live so we are both looking forward to indulging.
What I ask of Surly is to plot me out a BBQ route from CC to Abilene with the best spots to stop along the way.  Time isn't really a consideration, because who wants to get to Abilene anyway?

Butter’s in Sinton. Depending on your route, you could hit Burnt Bean in Seguin or Reese Bros in SA. I’m just some dipshit on the internet, but those three places are in my personal top 10.

  3. I have not been in a fight since adulthood. As a teenager had a few scraps where I came out on top.
I started training BJJ in 2006 and since then I really try to avoid physical altercations. Not claiming my hands need to be registered as lethal weapons hahaha, but one of the best things you learn is to try and avoid a fight.

  4. We need to stay far away from that TCU flopping ass punter.  Don't get near him.  He was flopping around after no contact in their game this year against KState trying to draw a call.  He didn't get it.

Do you want to die? I’m trying to forget that shit. Goddamnit.

  5. Yes, it makes zero sense why the recruiters do that. There is no upside.

I know there are some recruiters on this forum, and no offense meant, but most of my experiences with them have been bad.

And they need to stop with the cold emails/calls that offer next to no valuable information, especially salary range. The other is the lack of understanding how large certain cities are. Great, the job is in Houston, but where in Houston because this bitch can take 1.5 hours to cross in traffic. I’m not trying to work in Baytown and live in Cypress.

Mac, I truly hope you find something soon. If not, let’s start a crime syndicate.

  6. Sounds like he just knew he was going to have ac good time.  Doesn’t sound dysfunctional at all!

Haha well, he was obviously functional.

The guy that was promoted to manage the business unit ultimately got demoted and sent back to the refinery. He was a sooner, so that sounds about right.
  7. Motiva is selling terminals to Global Partners LP. I have a good friend who supports these assets and he's not too happy about it. Anyone know much about GP?
    https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20231108711745/en/Global-Partners-LP-to-Acquire-25-Liquid-Energy-Terminals-from-Motiva-Enterprises-LLC

I worked for Motiva for about 15 months. Holy shit, what a disfunctional group. But this was several years ago. They cleaned house and I survived as a contractor. Some funny stories from that time. Like the team building in New Orleans and one of the managers, probably 65 years old and married, decided to stash his condoms in the projector bag. Like 10 condoms.

  8. I have on a couple occasions. I got a clearance yellow spyderco and used dye to make it orange. Similarly took a clearance pink to purple/black. Twice was enough for me.

I moved on to buying custom scales from users on bladeforums, flytanium, AWT and others.

Ever buy any scales from this guy in Germany? I love to just look at his gallery.

I bought one for a grip and one for a PM II. I found out that I love how micarta looks when new, but not how dirty looking it becomes if you handle the knife a lot. All the oils in the hands. It’s a shame because they were very high quality.

  9. Thanks all for the replies.
Seeing the Kizer GottaB posted and the Banter you posted got my mind going. Leaning towards the Banter but going to log off from the computer for awhile and hope the feeling goes away for buying another knife.

I have a Kizer mini roach that I really like. But it’s a tiny bit tacticool for edc I think. It’s a hell of a slicer though and fun to fidget with.

My understanding is Kizer makes the OKnife.
  10. Spiderco is a very good brand. I just cannot get over the giant hole and hump. Visual nails on the chalkboard for me, though I bet it has great functionality.

I have one and agree. Also feel like the handle length is a bit much for EDC. My favorite Spyderco is the Sage I in tatanium. It’s an excellent EDC, but not $100.
  11. What EDC knives do y'all like at $100 or less? Thanks

Also, what are your requirements for EDC? I can be pretty picky about certain features, like a deep carry clip. If a knife doesn’t have a true deep carry clip or can easily swap it the clip for one, I won’t buy it. I also think that an EDC blade (especially since I work in an office) should be 2.5-3.25”. I also don’t like when a knife looks like it was designed to be sold in a gas station.

  12. What EDC knives do y'all like at $100 or less? Thanks

WE Knife Banter (look a few posts above). It’s $108 but you can find discounts.

    Petrified Fish Mini Beluga

    OKnife Rabato 3

CJRB Pyrite (I don’t think I like button locks, but this is a clean design and functional).

That’s a good start. I do like my Kubey knives, but they are kind of heavy.

  13. I tried Pinkerton's once in 2017 and it was on a day that I hit a few places.  Nothing really stood out for me.  I had Pinkerton's in SA a couple years ago and was really impressed.  I just don't have any reason to be in Houston anymore.
Tejas remains one of my top 5 favorite places in Texas.  Soccer games and swim meets landed us in the Tomball area several times and each time we had Tejas.  My wife was talking with Michelle Holland from Tejas on Sunday and told her that Tejas turned our kids into barbecue snobs.

I’m jealous. I wish I didn’t have a reason to be in Houston anymore either.

I still love Tejas. I had it about a month or so ago. Felt weird, no line and didn’t recognize any of the employees. They have slid into 3rd place for me in the metro area.
  14. Pit Room was my second favorite Houston area barbecue joint in 2017 - behind Tejas.
Pork ribs in the picture look a bit over cooked for my taste, though.

I was curious so I went back and tried to see where I had eaten most in 2017. Definitely Pinkerton’s (at least 6 times) then Tejas (5 times). Then a bunch of 1 or 2 visit places throughout the state.

    Quite different than today.

I do like pit room though. Just rarely go.

  15. Beginning to wonder about this, with all of the research I'm doing on knives these days because of this stupid thread. Seems even a USA company could build a quality knife and undercut some of these prices.
Maybe a little bit of "over-quality" plus "made in USA?"

Typically it seems that certain brands love to combine the made in USA with better materials. Naturally that will drive the price up a bit.

However, it seems like several Chinese brands are using the exact factories, and apparently in recent years, similar QA/QC standards. Lube makes a titanium with 14C28N steel for $100 (shipped). You take that same knife and throw a benchmade logo on it and it would be $175 if not more.

I would say the last 10 Chinese, budget friendly knives I have bought have been very well made and built.
