We'll see how this goes!

Players likely sold for good money to PL teams (close to £100m of value there)

  • James Ward Prowse
  • Mo Salisu
  • Kyle Walker Peters
  • Roméo Lavia

Players already gone, were on loan, or out of contract

  • Theo Walcott
  • Mohamed Elyounoussi
  • Ainsely Maitland-Niles

good players coming back from loan (not sure Tella and Stephens want to come back, as they would both be in the PL next year if their loans were extended)

  • Nathan Tella
  • Jack Stephens
  • Will Smallbone

hoping to hold on to, but dicey

  • Alcaraz
  • Sulemana
  • Armel Bella-Kotchap
  • Tino

mass exodus. Going to be very weak in midfield as JWP and Lavia were nailed on starters in the midfeield. DM will be a major focus in the transfer market.

Supposedly Russell Martin with Swansea will be our new manager, but as usual we are stepping on our dicks, and having trouble getting that one over the line.

Think you’ll be lucky to get 100 mil for those four but we’ll see.  Seems like the market has shifted a bit.  35m for Mcalister and Bellingham for less than 100 surprised me.  I think Jwp will end up being about 35 as well.  You lose negotiating power when relegated.  I was also surprised to see you as promotion favourites, tough to tell until transfer window closes.

been hearing 40 to 50 mil being bandied about for Lavia and JWP each, but who knows.

Yeah, no Southampton supporter feels like Saints are promotion favourites. The Championship is going to be rough this year.

Looking forward to the match with Wednesday tomorrow and structuring my lunch break around it. THE SEASON IS HERE!

Sorry @yoladu but I'm always an Owls fan when they aren't playing Villa.

All good. Let's hope for an entertaining match!

Sheffield Wed 1 -2 Southampton

  • Whole new style of play implemented by new manager Russel Martin.. Possession football on steroids.
    • Southampton had 78% possession and played nearly a 1000 passes.
    • after the go ahead goal - Southampton played keep away ball for the final 12 minutes - i don't think SheffWed even touched the ball. Crazy.
  • We had our usual set piece cockup defensively
  • JWProwse played despite W. Ham rumors.
  • Lavia did not play. Liverpool seem inevitable eventually.
  • Still not a lot of cutting edge or finishing in the final third.
  • important to start off on the right foot and bank those 3 points.
  • Hey, i get to celebrate a win.. that hasnt happened a whole lot in the last few years.

but overall impressed with what Martin has installed in just 5 weeks. On to the Carabao Cup Tuesday.

Southampton 4 - 4 Norwich

  • this match was a better measure where we are. Norwich is a top 10 side.
  • first match without JWP in the midfield for years and it showed. We got overran.
  • defense is a shambles.
  • life without VAR is glorious. I didnt realize how much i hated it until i watched a few PL matches this weekend. a goal is a goal in the Championship. You can celebrate it.
  • was able to watch the game on a dodgy stream pulled from Norwich's iFollow broadcast. No audio and couldn't maximize the screen on my iphone without it going to an ad screen. It sucks watching this way.

Supposedly, Flynn Downes (DM) is supposed to come on loan from West Ham any day now.

Russell Martin has mentioned him twice in press conferences as if he was on the squad and a medical was supposed to happen two days ago, but it was put off due to "food poisoning".

starting to get a bit fishy.

Plymouth  1 - 2 Southampton

  • Late game winner from Che Adams who likely will leave for Crystal Palace by the end of August. Ugh.
  • Can't keep a clean sheet.
  • Pro: the match was televised on ESPN+
  • Con: the match was at 6:30am (groan)
  • 7 points in 3 matches. Already more than a quarter of the points we got all last season.
  • 2 wins in 3 matches. Already a third of the total wins we got all of last season.

and a third loan in from Everton. CB Mason Holgate from Everton. (I learned today you can have up to 5 loaned players on a team in the Championship)

First team CB/DM for Everton for 3 years, before being out injured most of last year. We'll see.

Hull 1 - 2 Southampton

10 points in 4 matches. We haven't looked particularly good doing it, but a 4 match unbeaten steak has propelled the Saints to 5th place.

midweek match against 4th place Preston this Wednesday, whoever they are.
