War hawks are gunning for Iran. It's the US, Israel, Sunnis in Saudi Arabia vs the Shiite power in Iran.

Why did they get rid of Saddam again? Looks like it helped Iran in the short term to eventually take them out.

Peaceful protesters need to be armed in Iran soon so they can fight back against the evil Iran government.

What the fuck is this shit? Iran of 2018 is not Iraq of 2003.

Trump is fucking stupid for taking kids from their parents, and the GOP may lose power in the upcoming midterms thanks to that.  Getting lots of Americans killed for no reason will finish the job for 2020.

The truly amazing thing is, I'm still not sure we know. We know it wasn't the pretextual reasons they gave. It was and is blatantly obvious that they were doing everything they could to make a case for something they already wanted to do, meaning they knew that the real reasons they wanted to do it wouldn't persuade the American people or even the meager number of allies we managed to bring in on that.

I think the most likely answer is simple imperialism, they thought they could create a friendly client-state that would control extremely valuable resources and deal with us on favorable terms. Potentially also had to do with W having a personal desire to finish something his dad started. Or to bring about the final battle of Armageddon and set the stage for return of Christ - remember that in W's era fundamentalism/evangelicalism was HUGE and very politically prominent. W being on a mission from God and needing to go to war to fulfill prophecies was a small but very real part of the overall conversation in the leadup to that war.

I think some of it was creating a stable, western-style, friendly client-state that acted as a buffer to the Saudis and Iranians.

Saddam was getting older, and everybody knew the place would fall apart when he died and his sons fought over the place.

But I also think somebody wanted Hussein dead.  And somebody wanted access to oil and contracts.  And somebody wanted to kill a bunch of people.

Iran is crumbling caused by crushing economic sanctions which has halved the currency Rial relative to the US Dollar. The end is near for the regime with huge implications for Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. Will Russia save the regime?

the protests at the Grand Bazaar as having erupted after the Iranian rial dropped to 90,000 to the U.S. dollar on the country's black market, despite government attempts to control the currency rate.

Abbas Milani, director of Iranian studies at Stanford University, tells NPR via email that these demonstrations are different. "They have taken place amongst the regime's hitherto reliable basis of support — the members of the bazaar and the working classes. For over a hundred years, strikes in bazaars have been harbingers of change and invariably the clergy were allied with these merchants. Now the ruling clergy are the subject of the merchants' wrath."
