  1. On Saturday November 16th 2002, we went out for an early afternoon playoff game in Mesquite at Hanby Stadium against Sulphur Springs. Our quarterback, DFW Offensive Player of the year Bill Foran, sat out the game due to a high ankle sprain he suffered 2 weeks earlier in the district championship against Wylie. Our starting QB that afternoon was our strong safety, Rob Rain. Behind Rob was this pudgy, doughy white 14 year old freshman. He had just moved up to the varsity roster, the first freshman to do so since Lance McIlhenny around a quarter century before. This kid would run past me every day on the way to practice because in 9th grade, you’re told to run your ass to practice from 7th period since we don’t have time to fuck around. Because the first thing varsity players would do after 7th period was watch film, get taped up, have position meetings, etc, none of us had the need to haul ass to practice like freshmen did. When he’d pass me (or anyone else), he’d always say “excuse me, sir.” Sir? I’m 18 years old and this 14 year old is calling me “sir?” Damn. When we got near the end of practice we always had to go to the sideline to do wind sprints for conditioning and we did them by position groups so it had the feel of a legit race. They put The Freshman with us kickers since, as Coach Randy Allen put it to him, that’s what his speed and conditioning indicated. Of course the two of us (starter Ryan Wolcott and myself) would whip his ass. He actually went over to the side to puke after Monday’s conditioning. Anyways, cut to the 4th quarter of this first round game against Sulphur Springs. We had just scored a touchdown to go up 44-7 (or something to that effect). I was called on to execute the sky/pooch kickoff since it was against the wind. The upback let the ball go through his arms, bounced between his legs and one of our guys recovered the muff. On the very next play, The Freshman was put in. He didn’t throw a single pass across the line of scrimmage but still managed to conduct a touchdown drive to make it 51-7. We ended up winning 51-15. Tonight, almost 20 years later, that very same Freshman led his team on a game winning TD drive in the Super Bowl and is very likely bound for Canton.

  4. Autocrats played Trump like a fiddle. They knew that if they throw some flattery his way, tell him what a great and strong leader he is, they could manipulate him. They know he’s a fucking moron, a narcissist, and a total amateur when it comes to geopolitics. They were fucking laughing at him. Right in front of him. And he (and his supporters) were too stupid to see it.

  5. While Asians have been discriminated against in this country, like most minority groups, they were not held as slaves for the first 75 years of existence of the country and then systematically discriminated against, legally, for the next 100 or more. I've said it before, but a long time ago, my parents Sunday School class had a Jewish guy come for a couple of Sundays on the topic of "everything you wanted to know about Jews but were afraid to ask." One of the questions that came up was why, given that Jews have been systematically discriminated against for centuries, do they seem to achieve success everywhere they go. His theory was that Jews bring an "immigrant mentality" everywhere they go. They flee discrimination and oppression looking for a better life. It's voluntary. Slaves didn't "immigrate" to the US voluntarily, seeking a better life, like most other immigrant minorities. And, of course, once they got here were systematically oppressed in the worst kinds of ways. That theory may partially explain why more recent African immigrants seem more likely to "succeed." As catdaddyhorn says, blacks have been deprived of the opportunity to "prove themselves" in ways that other minorities have not. I hesitate to bring this up, because it involves a lot of generalities and I don't think comparing the struggles of various minority groups is particularly productive, except perhaps to note that the African-American experience has been particularly horrible.

  7. Wasn’t too thrilled about going out to the jetties in sub 50 degree weather but my son has been itching to go with nothing but school and work since October. Freezing ride out but fine in the sun when the boat wasn’t moving. No action for an hour and a half until this beast latched on to a cut whiting. Biggest I have personally seen. Measured out at 45” and bent the net neck getting her in the boat. Good times!

  16. @SydneyCarton, one of my little boys, myself and another buddy were playing a round last summer at Moody Gardens while hanging out in Galveston for a weekend. We probably all had some form of UT gear on, but nothing more than hats and one guy had a UT shirt. We're behind this foursome that is taking their round very seriously, and therefore very slowly. And they're not good. I mean, I'm not good, but I also know that and don't rehearse every putt for 5 minutes. Eventually, we're next to them on a turn and two of them in a golf cart come near us to hit their balls back on their fairway. We say "hi" and think nothing of it. Next hole, they made sure and waited until we pulled up to the tee box to tell us that "things have changed and y'all better get ready for it" ..."huh?"..."oh, come on, if you're coming to the SEC, you better be ready for big boy football! gig'em!" and they cackle and drive off. We all just looked at each other and said "of fucking course" and went back to playing. Same old aggies, always will be.

Alpine is the other Texas team in this league, which also has teams in a strange mix of cities including former big-time minor league towns like Tucson, Colorado Springs, and Bakersfield and then places like Weimar, Wasco CA, and Garden City, Kansas. The Weirdos will play at Zaragoza Park in Austin. Home jersey: Alternate jersey:

  29. Or some such insanity. And, he probably wouldn't have followed through. I find it funny that BIden is accused of weakness for pulling out of Afghanistan. Trump talked about it for four years and did jack shit, leaving the date for the next administration. The pullout would have been some form of shitshow regardless. That Biden actually did it is a sign of decisiveness.

  36. This thread is a constant reminder of how effed up the world really is. An individual who probably did more to screw up this country through deceit and propaganda than just about anyone in history was awarded this country’s highest civilian honor. The true example of life not being fair. A lesson for everyone.
