  1. I'm genuinely curious, why are you lying about this? Are you intentionally trying to deceive others in order to prove CRT is "evil"? Or have you not actually read any of this and therefore have no idea whether it's true or not? Either way, you are spreading lies. First, I can't find a single reference attributing that quote to "Stamped from the Beginning". Every reference quotes this from "How to Be an Antiracist," a completely different book. This makes me seriously doubt you've read either. Second, that is not a direct quote. You've lifted those phrases from the middle of a sentence and completely misrepresented the author's message. In the original text, "white people" are the object of the sentence. You've misquoted this to make them the subject of the sentence and change the meaning. This is shameful, lazy and transparent. Here is the full quote: The point is that racist ideas have an inherent seductive quality to them because they imply or state directly that the majority is good/better/worthy, and that makes these ideas move invasive. All people want to feel good about themselves. The danger of racist ideas is that someone can connect with that reinforcing message of goodness without ever realizing that the other side of the coin is exclusion and denigration of others. The author is not criticizing white people, he's warning about the dangers of racist ideas. Care to comment on why you would disagree with any of this? Furthermore, the passage really ISN'T EVEN ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE! The point of the passage is that the author found himself in a destructive loop. Racist ideas had helped him think less of himself, which led him to try less, which made him less successful, which proved those racist ideas right. The passage is all about the author's own enlightenment and how he had sold himself short without even realizing it. What about this perspective do you find evil? Why wouldn't you want every young person in America to reflect on this? The fact that you could read this and come away with such a self-centered interpretation is alarming. You must either completely lack self-awareness, or you must be so focused on championing a cause that you completely miss the powerful and valuable message.

  7. Guy walks into the Dixie Chicken and orders a beer. Bartender turns around, sizes him up, and say, "You aren't from around here, are you?" Guy replies, "Nope!" "Well, what do you do?", asks the bartender. "I'm a taxidermist.", the man replies. "Taxidermist? What is that? You drive taxis?" the bartender asks. The man replies, "No, I mount animals." The bartender exclaims to the bar's regulars, "It's ok, fellas. He's one of us."

  12. Ok, so assuming that what we have seen today indicates de-escalation (which, of course, isn’t certain by any means yet) what would be the fall-out from a Public Relations / Political/ “Intra-EU/NATO/Continental” standpoint? And does the insight into the European impact of a possible withdrawal help determine what Putin’s next move is going to be? Within the US, there would be a lot of “Putin flinched” or “Putin’s bluff was called and he backed down” type of spin, but would that really be the case? And just as importantly, what would the perception/reaction be here in Europe, which is ultimately the geographic area that this entire ordeal was designed to impact? If you are Putin, what would you reasonably get out of this if you end it right now, at 9:00 PM Moscow time on February 15th, 2022? And what could you still possibly gain? I will spoiler my take for length:

Before you think you've received tacit approval from readers of this thread to start robotically flooding it with any old random tidbit about Marquette, like uninteresting player commitments, I'd like to intervene and point out that this thread is for mocking the dickhead coaching the Marquette Mariners, and the various posters who can't quit him, and not just the "hey, keep us updated on all things Marquette" thread. That said, I am but one poster, so others may see it otherwise or be unfamiliar with what you wind up doing with threads when unbridled.

  18. Opioids and opiates are effective for those experiencing severe and chronic pain from objective pain generators. That population continues to suffer from the actions of those without objective pain generators. Think of cancer patients v. Junkies Weapons manufacturers suffer the same difficulties. Responsible gun owners like myself suffer because of tools parading around with weapons and sociopaths looking to kill anything. Think of Andy Griffith v Johnny Tool with penis envy and Saddam’s sons hunting people.

  23. I never liked Bash. I thought he was a terrible poster. As well as a Tech fan. That doesn't really matter, though. This is just a fucking message board at the end of the day. Bash struggled with an affliction that I struggle with myself. I don't know how he died but I know he didn't die a coward - he tried to address his issues and it was documented here. Our disease kills many. I hope he's at peace. He deserves it. A lot of us wish it at younger ages than he went. Maybe myself included. Just a pro tip for everyone: send a couple pms. Surly can be a hostile place but get to know some of these assholes and it isn't so bad. Myself included. There are always folks here willing to listen to your shit and help you out.

  24. A "Bates number" means, historically, a number stamped on a document produced in response to a discovery request. The numbers are used to keep track of which documents are produced and provide a uniform numbering so everyone in the case can figure out which document it is. Historically, such a number was applied with a "Bates stamp." Now that documents are mostly produced in digital images, they are "digitally" applied. Typically, they are sequential. Sometimes interrupted for organizational reasons. But yes, that suggests that Mazars has produced half a million documents.

  28. Yes. What happened is simple. A bunch of cybersecurity people were monitoring both campaigns, the White House, Congress, etc. for signs of foreign hacking, and one saw some suspicious DNS activity they thought warranted further investigation. It's that simple. You've misunderstood and/or misrepresented virtually everything remotely related to this matter to fit your conspiracy theory that Bill Barr thought was too absurd to investigate seriously. Meanwhile, you continue to downplay the support that Trump actually solicited and received from the Russian government. But sure, keep fucking this horse. When you're lying on your deathbed years from now you'll probably be dreaming of seeing Hillary locked up and all she was ever actually doing was being a shitty politician, losing elections and sharing recipes.

  30. Back to the Durham thing. This latest filing repeats, in less than a paragraph, what is detailed in Sussman's indictment. It's not new at all. It's a mere summary rehash. What's interesting though is that Sussman's indictment is 27 pages long to allege a single count of lying to the FBI. For perspective, the Manafort indictment was 31 pages long to allege 12 counts of relatively complex financial crimes. When it takes that long to explain a relatively simple crime, the prosecution may have problems. Also interesting is that, if the work on the DNS server data was so unlawful, why have none of the actual actors there been charged under the CFAA? It may constitute "spying" in the broadest sense, like you can spy on who comes and goes from a house or a place of business, but it does not appear to be unlawful. At least one "end" of a DNS server is, by necessity, public and open to sniffing or observation.

  31. Actually, you're missing the third and middle path for firearms which is actually something that's been applied to alcohol (via social pressure) over the past couple of decades -- RESPONSIBLE marketing and sale. The alcohol industry spends a fair amount of money and communication time on drinking responsibly, don't drive drunk, etc. No, of course it's not perfect. But there's an explicit message of responsibility, and a culture that has grown around it. People still abuse it, binge drink, etc. But it has had a positive effect. The culture of responsible gun ownership has been drowned out by the culture (and marketing) of billy joe badass, carry a weapon everywhere you go, trick it out, be ready for anything, tactical badassery bullshit. When I was a kid, the NRA was an organization dedicated to safe and responsible shooting sports and activities. I was happy to be a member for years. Today.....that's not the NRA's role at all. Seriously, it has become so far sidelined as to be a non-issue. It's all about your "right" to own as many types of whatever firearms you want and carry and swing them around wherever, whenever, and however you want. Balance. How about we try to take THAT approach, instead of having to hold manufacturers liable for marketing their products as cool toys....whether that be guns or opiates?
    5 points
  32. This. As a society, including both the manufacturer/merchant class and the consumer class, we suffer from a glut of "muh rights, I can do what I want!" and a near-total dearth of "responsibility." We are seriously out-of-balance. I love opiates -- I watched the palpable look of relief on my daughter's face when she was nearly blinded by pain from an acute medical condition that sent her to ER on the verge of going into shock. BUT.....profiteers like the Sacklers made a fortune marketing those drugs in a way that they knew would actually kill people. Product that can be used for good or bad, saw a heavy marketing for the bad. I love firearms - I've been shooting since I was 5. I hunt, my family enjoys trips to the range, we bond, and have a great time. But firearms have become a social status symbol, and not of anything healthy. Nutbars parade around with their AR at the grocery store or Chipotle, they carry them up to the Capitol at rallies for other causes, purposefully using them to intimidate. Product that can be used for good or bad, saw a heavy marketing for the bad. Shit, we could do this same exercise with a dozen things. I mean, matches are handy, but if there was a massive social shift to "I can hand out matches to three year olds, it's my right!", we'd have a problem. It all comes back to balance, and said balance being out-of-whack. Rights come with responsibilities. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should.

  33. Fucking criminal pervert. I hope he was tormented by the hook everytime he fought against it. How much did he pay to make the least humiliating public statement possible? The cost to his name and standing has been substantial. Still, it's not enough. He should be in jail. No person with any sense will not recognize the pathetic figleaf of this public statement. He can't deny he molested/raped her. He can only lie about the intent of his vicious attacks on her character since his misdeeds have become public. This is not a man. This thing should not have any title or rank no matter how illusory its real importance. Fuck this guy.
