  1. So serious response that I don’t think is going cloak room— the perception that Ukraine and Russia are kind of all the same except one is Team ‘Merica and the other is Team Bear— is a reflection of the type of Kremlin narrative that has crept into Western and U.S. discourse without the awareness that it is a Kremlin narrative. Because on the ground, nothing can be further from the truth. Ukraine with all its obvious and admitted problems with corruption and even extremism is not only far more humane and open than Russia right now, it is the only one even making an effort to “do better” as Gen Z says. But even assuming I’m wrong about that— the only person interested in having Russian soldiers and Ukrainian soldiers and civilians die is the Russian president. This would absolutely be a war of choice, there is no pressing security issue facing Putin. The only one that is floated (genocide, human rights abuse in Donbas)— is made up by Russia. So we’re back to that propaganda and disinformation war. Here’s your analogy as I see it, even accepting your framing (I don’t accept it). There are two warring crime families that have settled into a tense semi-peace. The weaker family just wants his turf and will never make a move against the bigger one because he can’t. The leader of the bigger crew has decided to take out the smaller, and he’s the one that’s threatening to have a gun—battle in that neighborhood and spray bullets into civilians bedrooms. They may both be assholes but one is clearly more asshole and more of a threat to the rest of us.

  2. Let me say this for the slow people in the back: 1. the police have given you ample warning to leave, without suffering consequences for your previous actions. When you failed to leave, they gave you direct instructions on how to be peaceful detained and released with a minimum of inconvenience. When you failed to do that, they gave you one last chance to walk away. 2. You didn’t. 3. Now they are beating the shit out of you and taking your stuff with little recourse. This is exactly what black people in America have experienced for hundreds of years. Except they start at #3. The amount of slack white people get then moan about suffering the consequences of their entirely preventable actions is honestly exhausting.

  6. Some of you seem remarkably surprised by how many Tech fans there were, and I simply don't understand it. Maybe I read too much? I don't know. We've known for several months it was going to be like this. A Tech fan found a link to the general admission tickets, posted it, and overnight they were gone. I don't know if Texas actually shut down the ability to purchase them at some point, but regardless, many of them landed in the hands of Tech fans without a doubt. However, those were all upper deck tickets. The lower bowl tickets represent the same problem they've represented for nearly 40 years. It's the exact same dynamic. Back in the 80s when Deloss Dodds first arrived at Texas every program was responsible for their own fundraising. It was a patchwork effort with no direction. Deloss Dodds founded the Longhorn Foundation and dictated that one donation to the Foundation allowed the donor access to premium seats based on that donation amount. Which frankly was a boon to the athletic department as a whole, and the right way to go...except for men's basketball tickets. When the suites and club seating were installed, part of the strategy for maximizing revenue became soliciting donations to various companies and organizations around town as the professional team of the city. They were marketed to bring clients/employees/whathaveyou to UT games as an event, with the football games being centerpieces. The basketball season tickets then tended to be sold as almost an afterthought, because after the huge donation necessary to get the premium seating for football, picking up the basketball season tickets with the same level of privilege was a toss in. It's why when you go to the FEC on a regular basis the lower bowl is so often empty. The purchase of those tickets didn't mean anything, so they're really only filled for big games. It's also why even when the seats are filled, so many of them are filled by different people for each game. It's not a family or individual. It's a company or organization that got the basketball tickets as a throw in for the football donation. When lower bowl tickets can be sold for a premium price like these Texas Tech tickets, they're going to get sold. It's seen as getting some money back. It has always been like this. The solution has always been the same thing. Make more lower bowl tickets available to students, make it easy for them to attend games, make their attendance seem important, and reward the best seats to the most fanatic of student fans. Secondarily, make basketball tickets require a separate donation from football. That has been politically very difficult to do, because the people who have those premium seats in the lower bowl aren't exactly excited about changes, and they're donating a lot of money to the athletic department. All of that will change next season with the Moody Center, but this is the first time it will finally be the way it should have been for the last 40 years. I guess you can blame CDC for all of this, but to me, he has to pick his fights, and the timing of the Moody Center allows him to make these changes with a minimum of donor revolt, although I'm sure there will be some grumbling for sure. I'm glad this Texas Tech fiasco happened. I'm more glad it happened after Chris Beard got here. Because Beard is part of the solution. He's done an amazing job of engaging with the students since he arrived. I loved seeing those long lines out the door at the FEC this morning. I'm very much embarrassed if students were promised seats and then were removed from the arena because those seats weren't actually available, as indicated by the tweet this morning posted on this thread. Despite today's loss, things are still going in the right direction. Also, it was nice to see all the former players referenced coming back to campus. I really enjoyed that. Bummer to have Texas Tech sweep us, especially with all the emotion surrounding both games. Kudos to Mark Adams for building a better team at Tech than Beard did at Texas. I still really like where this program is headed. I do not understand any one who wants to go all doom and gloom about anything regarding this season...even this loss. I do wish there was some way to get Mitchell back on the court, because having one less big body is really bad for this group. On to hosting TCU on Wednesday, which really will be a must win.

  7. My buddy was 35 and had intestine surgery in Oct. There were complications and a stint in the ICU and he was in the hospital past Christmas. He was single and his mom was checking on him today. They had a good conversation while she rubbed his back. She stepped out of the room to call her sister and when she came back 15min later he was gone. Just peacefully. Craig was a character but if I had to tell something about him to describe him I’d say he was born and raised in Boston and was a Southie growing up. He liked to let loose and enjoyed the drink but had the character to stand up for the little guy/gal. Hes that guy who watched over the passed out chick on the couch all night because there were some sketchy people sleeping in the house too. he’s the guy who was nice, polite and loved people but knew all the hustles/cons/grifts and had no problem calling your shit out a mile away. He wasn’t scared of anything and could take a punch. so long partner. I’ll see you when I see you

Cast at about 4 fish saw too many too late. Had a real chance at two and landed this one. So I got 1 outta 2 on a fly in suboptimal conditions, I say bad ass.

  14. Yes I can. I didn't see an overall lack of effort at any point during that game from Texas. Maybe some isolated plays from certain individuals. We shot like shit - turned the ball over too much - and got unavoidably exploited from a matchup standpoint.

  16. 22 deaths for Travis County w/e Feb 18th. I think we are coming down from the Omnicron related peak (which was last week with 33). They break out as follows: 40 to 49 (2) 50 to 59 (6) 60 to 69 (6) 70 to 79 (1) 80+ (7) Here is mortality rate by age group for Travis County pandemic to date: <1 (0%) 1 to 9 (0%) 10 to 19 (0.004%) 20 to 29 (0.041%) 30 to 39 (0.113%) 40 to 49 (0.368%) 50 to 59 (0.967%) 60 to 69 (2.888%) 70 to 79 (5.773%) 80+ (12.205%) Once again if you have autoimmune issues, BMI >40 and/or 60 years old or greater you should be vaccinated. Latest state of Texas data shows you are 45X more likely to die from CV19 if you aren't vaccinated. I know at this point everyone is entrenched but I just feel better saying it.

  17. Let’s veer back into the realm of possible and explore Russia’s potential war aims. Because how a war ends is more interesting and arguably more important than how it starts. Surprise— I don’t see any of the likely scenarios contributing to a better security environment for Russia or anyone else. These are by nature simplified into categories with significant room for each scenario to take on different attributes. Minimal- Putin recognizes Donbas areas in a preview to annexation and sends in Russian “peacekeepers.” Very likely, they seize the areas claimed but not controlled currently by DPR/LPR and potentially seize a corridor to connect them to Crimea by land. Accompanied by usual cyber and propaganda warfare, no real effort is made to change the leadership in Kyiv. Problem: This moves pieces around the board but does not result in check. Russians do not really want Donbas, unlike Crimea. Attitudes against Russia have hardened and Ukraine leans even harder into the West. After the immediate crisis passes, more Western arms and trainers flow to Ukraine. Putin can write off a friendly Kyiv in his lifetime. Likely crippling sanctions. This is a good punt— you flip the field but you’re back on defense if you’re Russia. Putin has pretty much said he considers a pro-West Kyiv to be a core security threat. Moderate- All the above PLUS a decapitation strike against Ukrainian leadership and installation of a new, friendly regime. Perhaps a bigger land grab in the East that then the new government “recognizes.” Problem: Ukrainians do not want a puppet government and one cannot be installed and maintained absent extreme repressive measures. Manipulation and tricks do not work, see Orange Revolution and 2014z Ukraine would become a true client state. Russian forces likely needed throughout the country to maintain order. The west does have a history and terrain to support an insurgency and the West might be inclined to support it. Strong potential of low grade warfare on the border with NATO and increasing chance of miscalculations. High likelihood of serious human rights abuses and refugee flows all around and now Russia has a new security problem- how to continue to prop up Kyiv against itself. Maximum- Russia attempts to occupy the country and incorporate Ukraine into Russia. A combined arms army in Uzhgorod looking across the border at NATO. Putin is your president now, Yevhen. Problems: Almost all of the above insurgence and pacification issues plus now Putin has what he says he doesn’t want— NATO at his doorstep. Moldova, with its own frozen conflict, becomes the new bone of contention as the last sort of “gray area” left. NATO dramatically increases its force posture on the eastern flank. The only semi-benefit is the cold simplicity of the new “mine and yours” Iron Curtain. My own thought is Putin is most likely to go to some form of moderate ending— and I am not at all sure that Russia has the capability to achieve it without serious aftershocks that they may not be able to cope with.
