I posted early on in the active war portion of this thread how my wife had ordered some Etsy thing from Ukraine (a wooden step stool for a kid to help cook) and they sent a thing saying roughly “sorry we’re at war now we’ll ship it asap wish us luck Slava Ukraini “. The motherfuckers shipped it. It got shipped from Poland. Slava Fucking Ukraini. I would have given them precisely zero negative feedback for absconding with my money and surviving, and they shipped the stupid stool. Slava Ukraini19 points

Great thread, but dammit I sure wish my kid was at home enjoying his new wife and maybe thinking about giving me grandkids instead of working 18 hours a day on the Polish/Ukraine border. I know thats selfish in light of widespread was crimes.18 points

The single best explainer on the persistent myths and misconceptions about western policy to Russia is not American but British and was published by Chatham House: https://www.chathamhouse.org/2021/05/myths-and-misconceptions-debate-russia Stephen Kotkin has a fantastic and deeply informed piece on why blaming the West for Ukraine is off base: https://www.newyorker.com/podcast/politics-and-more/stephen-kotkin-dont-blame-the-west-for-russias-invasion-of-ukraine Anything by Masha Gessen is worth reading but especially her 2008 Vanity Fair profile of Putin is accessible and insightful and prescient. A highly critical look but one written by someone deeply familiar with Russia is Stephen Cohen’s Failed Crusade. Keir Giles’ Moscow Rules is a good short read on what to expect in a relationship with Russia. William Taubman wrote the best book on Gorbachev and his times. Very specific but vital to understanding Russia’s way of war after the fall of the USSR: Sebastian Smith’s Allah’s Mountains about Russia’s brutal war and defeat in the first Chechen War. Michal McFaul’s articles and books, especially from Cold War to Hot Peace for a look at the inside of U.S. foreign policy in the middle of the Putin reign. But his books on the 1990s are more academic and wonky. Your key problem is embedded in your question: You don’t want to understand Russia. You want a cast of characters you know, engaged in a morality play where you have already chosen sides. And you want someone to blame, who is not Russian. American foreign policy WRT to Russia is a massive topic with plenty to praise and criticize. It is endlessly fascinating, but it is not where you should start if you want to know why Russia is what it is, who Vladimir Putin is and why he is in the Kremlin, why it is fighting in Ukraine, and why an endless series of Western Powers, the United States being the latest, have been frustrated in any attempt to reach a productive accommodation with Russia in any of its forms. Russia spans a continent and holds hundreds of millions of people and has shaped the history and political geography of the world at least as much as the United States has. Try centering Russia and Russians for a change instead of seeking an American explanation. This is what’s meant by “Westsplaining.”18 points

so...over the past month Maggie pretty rapidly developed glaucoma with significant and visible pressure/bulging, along with an ulcerated eye that was very likely going to need removal as it was likely to burst, a persistent respiratory cough to the point of momentarily losing consciousness, and this morning she had some sort of grand mal seizure, i honestly thought she was literally dying in my arms. it took her an hour to recover. she's also been up and kept me up literally all night for the past two nights, coughing and/or crying/whining. I've had about 5 hours sleep since Saturday night. my sister and i had already decided at 18 yoa, surgery was a non-starter...so the eye was probably enough, but add on the other issues the past week...it was time. i had her three years and three months, that's how long mom's been gone. we bonded when she was just a few months old and i visited my mom, she fit in the palm of my hand and slept on a pillow right next to my head. she was hard-headed but got along with everybody, people, dogs, cats, even babies. she loved being groomed but hadn't been to a professional groomer until I took her. she'd never been to the beach either and she loved it. she was feisty and playful and had the best personality. she never even got gray hair. this was the fifth and last animal (4 dogs and a cat) we've had in this house... their ashes are all buried in our backyard, but we're going to take Maggie to mom's grave and spread her ashes there. she was my mom's dog, not mine...i just loved her and tried to take good care of her.14 points

This. For all of its faults -- and there are many -- the "liberal postwar order" and the attacks on and decline of same are quite relevant. If you want to connect these current events to the United States and its actions or inactions, it would be intellectually dishonest to fail to account for the complicity of millions upon millions of Americans in happily assaulting and undermining that order, setting the stage for what is happening right now. A sizeable chunk of America, including an entire political party, has worked in parallel (if not direct cooperation - I know, "Russia, Russia, Russia!" - shove that up your ass, it's beyond argument that the messaging, rhetoric, and near-term goals of Russia and their GQP sycophants are in such close parallel that it ain't a goddamned coincidence) with the goals and strategies of the quasi-fascist authoritarian manipulative populism of Russia, Hungary, etc. Every message and manipulation communicated by Russia found champions here, and the goal of all of those was a weakened America, NATO, and the idea of liberal democratic governance (again, flawed as our model may be in the execution). This outcome -- a perceived weakened West, an emboldened Russia, and then the action Russia has taken based on those expectations, is EXACTLY what you and millions of others wanted. As Bozo said in another post, this is what "burn it down" looks like. You may have problems with the western approach, but when you undermine it and force it to retreat.....this is EXACTLY what fills the void: These are your wishes coming true. Those of us who have repeatedly warned about the cost of such wishes are getting really fucking tired of being right.13 points

"so you see, i had to go undercover to help out the CIA and after the mission, the name just kinda stuck. Worst part was burning all my ties to PWC, but i would do it again to protect the mission and serve my country. Yes i have to check these stupid messageboards to see if coded message ever comes through and they need me back. It's amazing how many bottle caps the CIA has asked me to open with my teeth, so i have to stay vigilant"11 points

Having a really shitty day guys. Forgot to let the dog out last night so she pooped in the hallway. Also could not find my car keys this morning. If not for the fucked up US foreign entanglements and policies of the 80's and 90's, none of this would have happened.10 points

We went to Seattle last weekend, so I have two: 1. Went to the hockey game Friday night, and it was "clear plastic bag giveaway night." You know, the bags that every sporting event now requires you to carry instead of a purse? We walked out with about 5 of them. So anyways, we go to a college baseball game Sunday. As we walk up, I notice that she's carrying her purse. "You forgot to bring one of the 5 clear plastic bags we now have, didn't you?" So I got to go in before her, and buy a clear plastic bag for $15 from the souvenir stand. 2. We took the redeye flight back and landed at about 4:30am. I walked out to get the car while she waited for baggage. (We parked in the economy lot because we'd much rather spend our money on clear plastic bags.) Once in the car, I couldn't find the parking receipt. So I called her and found out the ticket was in her purse. So I walked back to the terminal to get it. "Why did you not leave it in the car?" "I've heard you're not supposed to do that." "Why?!?!?!?" "Well, someone could break into the car and steal it." "Why would someone break into a car to steal a parking receipt? And wouldn't it be much more likely that they'd steal your purse and the ticket inside it?" "Why are you always so critical of me?"9 points

Something I'd like to hear every day... She came today! (Tenor sax peeking in at left; matches the Ludwig cans! Wow!)................... Love the f-hole plying! Lake Tahoe on a sunny day........................................................ Neck and inlays. Love the basic headstock. Just ran it around the test track a little... action seems great, might not need to adjust. It's big - as hollow bodies are... bigger than I anticipated, and has a dreadnought body feel. Neck will take some getting used to... much deeper (behind, where your "cup" between thumb and index is), again feels more like an acoustic and less like a fast-moving Strat... but I have larger hands so shouldn't take long to get it down. Narrower neck than I might have thought, too. My favorite reaction so far is running distortion through it and playing power chords that have a woodsy bottom to them - gawd this thing will sound great cranked up. There's a particular Gretsch power sound I like (not Malcolm's though that's awesome). Very happy with that. Hopefully I can make a short video and coax out a few different sounds. Should walk through 50's sound like buttah. Anyway, much happiness ensued.9 points

As a reminder, this was Ana's response to a lot of people expressing disgust on Monday at Putin's war crimes: I don't think a single poster had even expressed a desire to invade Russia, nuke Moscow, kill Russians, or anything like that. It was simply a unified reaction of disgust as the evidence from Bucha came to light. And that was how Ana chose to comment on it. Now he's back making a post that sounds perfectly reasonable, but it's just cover for his shitposting. Because he's a broken person who is so internet poisoned he's incapable of expressing any sincerity and compulsively needs to dunk on anyone else who does express sincerity.9 points

Just try it one time man. "All empire bad." It's easy and has the benefit of being internally consistent and, even more importantly, morally good. If we're talking about what US foreign policy should be, it's important to be pragmatic. American empire is bad and the justifications usually given for it are usually bullshit. It's fine and good to be critical of policy decisions. But reflexive contrarianism isn't critical analysis, it's just an excuse not to think about something. There's no good goddamned reason for someone who claims to be a progressive to affirmatively endorse Russian imperial ambitions just because you don't like American foreign policy.9 points

So much this. And thanks for teaching me the term "Westsplaining." American leftists/contrarians have the same disease that the "blame Biden for inflation and gas prices" have -- America controls everything in the world, so whatever happens, America did it. It's so fucking egocentric and shortsighted, and they don't realize that they are the intellectual equivalent of the guys who put the Biden "I did this" stickers on gas pumps. Russia has agency. It has had agency for 1000 years. The countries all along its flanks have agency -- eastern europe, western europe, scandinavia, central asia, east asia -- They are all real-deal players with significant influence on Russia and Russian thinking, again, for 1000 years. This idea that Russia's actions are little more than an involuntary reptilian reflex against stimuli arising from the US exclusively/primarily is self-absorbed thinking of the highest order. Russia is busy, right now, being Russia. That is, being the Russia that it has been for centuries, LONG before the US had a significant role in world affairs. Watching an entity with a long history, distinct personality, and plenty of agency, doing what that entity has done repeatedly in the past, and this time, blaming this episode of that consistent pattern of behavior on a relatively novel stimulus is folly from whichever angle you examine it. Yet that's just what the "no matter what happens on the globe, the US is to blame" crowd does. That doesn't mean that the US doesn't have agency, power, and influence. But it's a far greater and more complex system than "whatever the US does controls everything." We overestimate our importance and power -- most of these critics will say that, or at least nod along when someone else does Yet in the next breath, no matter what the shitstorm in the world is, they will examine that shitstorm solely through the lens of "and the US caused this." Cognitive dissonance -- it's not just for Trumpers.9 points

Dude, we get it. You think Baylor’s turnaround was entirely centered around a guard and center they got in the portal and not telling Larry Fedora and Charlie Brewer to get as far away from their football facility as possible and leaning on the 5 or 6 NFL draft picks on their defense. I’m not even saying I don’t agree they should have looked into the portal at OL, but I’m convinced at this point you just wanted to see them take one just so you could say we took one, you wouldn’t even care about the quality of the player. I already know how this conversation will go to. Someone will point out the OL class that was signed and you will look into your crystal ball and remind us that Kelvin Banks could always transfer to Bama in 2023. So I guess in that sense we should have just signed 0 HS lineman and 7 transfer OL because the HS lineman could just transfer and that’s just too much of a risk for us to take on.9 points

So, my Brother in Law was murdered around 1991 or 1992. The cops knew who did it right away. I took a few days to find the motherfucker, but they found him. Anyway, my (now ex) wife and I attended every hearing, and every minute of the trial. His counsel was from the Public Defender's office. A cat named "Klein". There were only a few of us that attended the hearings and trial. My wife and I on our "side", and the killer had a couple of sisters and an aunt IIRC. Anyway, we all figured out who was who. I used to see Mr. Klein in the hallway before court, at lunch, in the pisser, etc. I always greeted him by name, told him "good morning", "good afternoon", etc. BECAUSE HE WAS JUST A GUY WITH A JOB TO DO AND WAS DOING IT TO THE BEST OF HIS ABILITY. It wasn't his fault that his client was a murderer. Meanwhile, I believe we have a poster here that works for the Los Angeles Public Defender's office. I sincerely hope that he's good at what I imagine to be a very difficult job, and works hard at it.9 points

Every time his personal info gets put on blast here, I'm quite certain his racist ass has flashbacks to pwc and the great Twitter investigation from which his public shaming began. Just imagining him seeing this thread bumped and feeling his stomach turn a little each time wondering what will happen next is absolutely worth the occasional interruption to our football programming. That fucker earned and continues to earn every bit of anxiety he feels when this thread is bumped. His racist trolling cost him an internship, a potential job, possibly an entire career path, and forced him to change his name, yet he continues doing much of the same shit today. Fuck that guy.8 points

How anyone can come to the conclusion we provoked Putin to invade Ukraine is a monumental mind fuck of stupidity. Putin is exactly what every leader in Russia has been with the exception of Boris Yeltsin: despotic, autocratic, militaristic, repressive, mafioso type rulers. Gorbachev was a reluctant peace maker. He was at least intelligent enough to see the writing on the wall. Reagan does deserve a great deal of credit as one of several factors for the USSR's ultimate downfall. Star Wars for all its impossibilities was a straw that broke the camels back because the Russian military knew it couldn't financially compete with that technology, and continue to design, and build its others military resources. That's direct comment from several of the old guard, Russian military leaders in interviews several year back on some cable documentary. So take it for whatever value you want. My opinion of Russia is it's always been a paper tiger. Their nuclear capability has been the only thing getting them a seat at the table of super power status. Their main line military capabilities, technologies, and tactics have always lagged behind ours, even with some of the more nasty shit they've developed the last 20 years. When you rely on unschooled, conscripts as a major component of your standing army you're gonna have trouble projecting military might thru intelligent, and motivated means. NATO did exactly what it should have done with invites to the former eastern block states. Does Putin invade Ukraine if they're a NATO member ? Doubtful, highly, highly, doubtful. That does help explain their constant meddling in the region, keeping Ukraine in a continual state of agitation, and semi conflict keeps that invite in the back pocket of NATO. The only threat NATO (a defensive, military alliance) poses to Russia is being a bulkhead against Russias/Putins empire building fantasies, that bring the glory of the old Soviet empire back to reality. I bet Putin sees hi self as the lost czar, a particularly long lived, Russian fantasy of a ruler who saves the empire, and the people. NATO is not invading Russia, nor any other sovereign state without some pretty exceptional reasons (SEE Iraqs invasion of Kuwait). The way we released intel staying one or more steps ahead of Putins moves into Ukraine was pretty damned smart. It gave Putin nowhere to go with his lies, and alibis for invasion. CONCLUSION: Fuck Putin.7 points
