So the US gave Putin advance warning that Biden was flying into Kyiv and Putin did nothing about it? And the only rhetoric he could come up with in his much anticipated speech is to "temporarily withdraw" from a nuke agreement and promise that if the US tests a nuke then they will, too? And sprinkle in some gay slurs? That bitch ain't dropping any nukes. Biden just pantsed that dude.19 points

Damn, head of Ukrainian railway system has a long and awesome thread about yesterday. He apologized that only 90% of the trains were running on time to accommodate Rail Force One. Also, it's a big fucking deal for the Secret Service to sign off on alternate modes of travel for a POTUS, and especially in a literal war zone.18 points

And this is another problem. Republicans have been shit for decades. Their economic, healthcare, and cultural (christofacist) policies have been shit for decades. But, they’ll all be better once this current crop goes away. I wouldn’t be able to buy health insurance today without those commies Obama and Biden cause health insurance companies wouldn’t sell to us 1 million+ type 1 diabetics. Republicans are irredeemable pieces of shit always and forever.16 points

WRT discussion of US policy, I think it’s ok to do it here, with the caveat that parroting Russian agitprop, even accidentally, will get you mocked. How to tell if it’s Russian agitprop? That’s difficult, because there is so much. I’m sorry, but agitprop may make for smart and snarky sounding sound bites, but it does not move honest policy discussions forward. A good tool is to use the guidelines of logic and rhetoric. Here is an example-“Sure, Biden looks big going to Kyiv; why doesn’t he go to E. Palestine, Ohio?” If you don’t like Biden, that’s meat to chew on, but it’s a lot more gristle than steak. It’s the “What about” fallacy and the “strawman fallacy”, all cooked up with sour cream (Russians like sour cream). Here is what I would offer as a critical analysis- “I like Biden’s visit- to me, it represents the best face of America to the world and history. We still have a lot of important domestic issues and I hope our divided government can work together to advance American interests on all fronts.”15 points

Against all of what little good judgement and common sense he has left, Deadshank had a few of his ol buddies out to his place including me this past weekend for a management hunt and some good ol fashion lying, eating and drinking contests. 2 doe and 1 mgmt Buck and 1 cull Buck were taken and several brain cells and keto diets were killed. Great time and a great place and setup you have Deadshank! Frio River needs some rain badly but enjoyed exploring the dry riverbanks post hunt!14 points

Can someone explain to me, without being an asshole, why the US War of Northern Aggression vs the Goold Ol South was looked upon so favorably and aid to the Underground railroad held in high regard? Why would anyone support that? I'm not looking for any emotional responses from Catholics or abolitionists though.13 points

Russia embarked on a war of conquest against a sovereign state. It’s illegally proclaimed that huge chunks of that country are now it’s own. It did so in violation of international law, both precedent and several explicit treaties that it (and China) are parties to. China would also become a party to those violations if it started providing lethal aid to Russia. This isn’t an issue of feels or who thinks that they are on the “right” side.12 points

so i've been waiting to post this because i've been fucking furious about it. austin police is a fucking joke. fuck you all. just a complete fucking joke of an organization. last weekend, my in laws were robbed. burgled. whatever. some dude broke into their house. then that dude let in another dude. luckily, my in laws were out for the evening. anyways, at 2:30ish in the am, first guy is seen on ring. 3:30ish in the am, another dude shows up with a goddamn hammer and starts in on the front door, before (presumably) he is let in by the other guy. no real camera activity until 8:30ish in the morning, when one of the dudes is loading up one of my inlaws cars, wearing my father in law's clothes, boots, $300 hat. neighbor (elderly gentleman) wielding a freshly cut bamboo pole confronts the car thief as he's getting in the car. thier speeds off, nearly dragging neighbor with him. guy speeds off, police are called. 8:30am. stolen car. oh well. possible drunk/high perp driving at high speed. oh well. oh, they robbed the house. oh well. anyways, i arrive to help them clean up around 9:30, expecting to see multiple police cruisers on the scene. haha. nothing. the dudes tossed their house. i mean, i guess, luckily my in-laws are not super well off, but they work fucking hard and their stuff is fucking theirs. but there were no guns to take, no major valuables. just the car and some clothes, som broken stuff. they took a shower in there, changed clothes, left behind all their old clothes, wallet, drug periphenalia, condoms, whatever. they raided the fridge and threw full beer cans around. they ate provolone and chocolate. it was a strange scene. sampled various nice things from the liquor cabinet, ruining probably more than $1000 worth of booze. i helped clean up. hours pass. no cops show up. there's a police report, and suddenly mom in law asks me if she should handle her car insurance. i told her if it made her feel useful to call the insurance and report it stolen, but the police already had the report, so she needn't worry at that moment, etc. well, she wanted to feel useful, so she called, and... there has been an injury accident reported with her vehicle to her insurance. the motherfucker hit someone. we have pics from nextdoor of police on the scene of the accident. the car is totaled. booze all over the car. happened in the morning. still, nobody from apd has showed up at the house. the meth head walked away toward 183, presumably never to be heard from again until his next shining moment of breaking in and stealing shit is once again unpunished. anyways, by and by, i leave. shit's mostly cleaned up and most importantly, the inlaws are more at ease. i guess. as i am driving home, i idly notice that a police cruiser has pulled someone over not 5 minutes away from their house. looks like a speeding ticket or something. nevermind the victimized family minutes away, get that money, apd! anyways, the police showed up at 11:30pm. so, robbery, stolen vehicle, injury accident, perp on the loose, oh well. we'll just show up IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING NIGHT AFTER A BREAK IN. WHAT COULD GO WRONG? needless to say, my father in law answered the door with a baseball bat. cops are shining lights in his eyes, etc. it all ended more or less amicably with my father in law telling them to fuck off. eventually, the police came by to collect the items left by the perps. car was totaled. hat was recovered from the scene of the wreck. well done, apd. not only did you not bother to try and catch the guys, by the way, whose faces are clear on the ring doorbell footage you were offered, but declined to even view it. a pretty hip south austin neighborhood was fairly traumatized by these two methheads, but no cops bothered to show up to even, i dunno, pretend they were on the fucking case and gave a shit about the residents of the neighborhood? casual neglect might get you a few extra concessions in your negotiations, but you get a hearty forever fuck you from me for dereliction of duty. fuck you apd. you suck.11 points

Won’t go into the China debate here at all, but a huge part of this whole process is that the world has woken up to how bad a rogue actor can get over his skis if no one shows resistance. Putin was encouraged by the lack of response all the way through the invasion last year, and had to have been taken aback that all of a sudden, what hasn’t been an issue in taking Crimea, or downing the airliner, or poisoning people overseas, became a red line. Now there is a consensus, NATO looks like a real alliance again, and authoritarian regimes that think military might will allow them to bypass international norms are on the back foot. The world has changed a lot, and the consequences will resonate for a while. The visit to Ukraine on the eve of Putin’s speech just underlined it.11 points

So, a few points on New START from my point of view. A caveat here is that you’re going to see endless takes from newly minted arms controls experts. There’s lots of room to disagree on the significance of this, from honest people. Your best bet is to examine their takes on other stuff Russia and Ukraine related, proceed accordingly. I am NOT an arms control expert but I do think I have more to offer than average on Russian thinking and can say I am somewhat adjacent to these issues. So, diving in: - Suspension and not withdrawal is important. Putin can simply return to participation any time he wants and now he has a new bargaining chip to play with that is mostly cost-free. - He didn’t outline any terms of return, and that’s on purpose. He will keep them vague, the better to manipulate. He DID say that the arsenals of France and the UK should be considered, which is a non-starter as this is a bilateral agreement with the U.S. and Russia. Nifty rhetorical trick underscoring that the West is just the U.S. and vassals, which his audience will like. - Limits on arsenals get all the headlines but just as important are the notifications and inspections mechanisms. That’s what Russia has been non-compliant with and that’s what Russia is really suspending officially. I wouldn’t bet on a big nuclear buildup. - This will not play well in Europe. It’s all very North Korea-esque. Just a reminder that Russia isn’t a reliable partner and they only speak the language of threats. The tankies and the loony right will wave this around though.11 points

Putin is now talking about roads and shit and seems to have finished the war stuff. Lots of shit about Nazis and The Gays and back patting about how they are fighting the entire West and winning and sanctions aren’t working. All the real announcements were about how they’re going to mobilize the Russian defense industry through some state directives and other shit that’s too boring to even get into. So I’ll call myself Nostradamus on this one.11 points

Remember, average Russians aren’t on the mil blogger telegrams and they get their news from the nightly news and state outlets. And “we have always been at war in the Donbas” isn’t the worst thing Putin can do to settle on. I do think that Putin was surprised that Kyiv didn’t crumble and his lightning attack on the capital got crushed at the airport battle. So it’s taking him some time to reorient and decide what the strategic goal really is. And here’s something to remember- winning this war was never the most important thing to him. Being in power is. And if the cost of winning the war is full mobilization and crashing your image as a successful ruler and maybe admitting failure—- he won’t do it. But the other thing to remember is that these types of speeches aren’t designed to inspire and rally and inform. They’re designed to soothe and feed prejudice and keep the status quo. This was never the venue to make a dramatic announcement. He may still do so, or (more likely) he will seek more boring administrative solutions to address his manpower issues.10 points
