  1. Dammit - your picture made me remember how much I loved my 30+ year old old Red Wings that got destroyed by my pup last year... Can you even buy them anymore (and if so, are they the same quality)?
  2. Thanks! I soaked a label off a wine bottle and put it on my growler for my next refill...
  3. I am down in New Braunfels and went to refill my growler (Growlerwerks 128) and the gal at the bar said I need to have a label on it per some new TABC regulation that went into law within the past 6 months. She said the required label is similar to the warning label on a hard alcohol bottle. I did a google search and couldn’t find anything about this being required... anyone point me to this regulation? (She still filled my growler but it’s news to me...)
  4. Mercado San Miguel doesn’t have the same cool vibe as the Mercado in Barcelona... the one in Madrid has more of a “Galleria” or Whole Foods feel while the one in Barca has more of a local feel. It’s more of a place to go high-end shopping while the one in Barca is more of a foodie destination... Went to Bodega de los Secretos on my last visit. Pretty cool place in a “restored” cellar that had been used by monks to smuggle wine under the old city wall to avoid paying taxes. Food is good but the location is what makes it really cool. Have someone on the staff give you a tour of the place after you eat. It’s a tough place to find as it’s on a side street and just marked by a door and many Madrid locals don’t even know it exists... Walking distance just NM of Atocha station...
  5. Pete’s Tako House just north of downtown is one of our favorite breakfast places...
  6. I highly recommend The Colony Cobbler... I brought in a pair of 35+year old Justin Elephant boots that I got as a gift when I got accepted to UT. They took a lot of drunken abuse and started to split on the outside at the widest part of my foot. I had taken them into Palace Boots in Houston ( now gone) who said the only repair was to stick a patch on the split. I bailed at the time as I thought it would look like crap. Years later (based on recommendation here) I took them into Colony Cobbler and he was able to break the boots down (new sole and liner) and repair the damage and they look like new...
  7. Got a weekend to kill (solo) while in Madrid- better to head to Grenada or Portugal? Been to Barcelona many time but want to do something different... Having lived in Europe for several years, a church is a church is a mosque is a church so no intererest in seeing another one...
  8. Anyone been to Calgary recently? Haven’t been in 3 years and headed there tomorrow for a few nights.... I assume the oil crash has killed off a few resturants - anything new downtown?
  9. My GE expires this month (but my Nexus is still valid for another year). Has anyone done the renewal process? My boss who doesn’t have GE said the new app based entry form gets him through the line just as fast as GE. Anyone have experience with the new app and if it’s not as good, what does it take for the GE rental?
  10. Just bought one to use in The Woodlands where I am 3.5 miles from house to office. Bike trails here say no motorized vehicles so I guess I’ll use my leg to pretend I’m pushing it manually if I happen to pass anyone... usually no one one the trails when I’m riding my bike... Swagtron has this on sale for $300 on their website... Cheaper than a battery for my e-bike...
  11. Mushroom caps, filled with Costco spinach, artichoke and Parmesan cheese dip for 7 minutes... yum...
  12. If you don't want to cut a hole in your cooler lid, here's what I did... After the elections are over, snag one of those political yard signs. Most are made of Coroplast or plastic cardboard. Trim a piece to fit inside the rim of the cooler and a hole for the Anova. The corrugated nature of the plastic makes it a decent insulator and it's rigid enough if you also want to lay a towel over it as a further insulation. (I used this stuff to cover the frame and as the roof of my deer blind and had some left over...)
  13. I have a gluten-intolerant kid so he eats a lot of fries. Easy to toss in a bag of frozen fries and done in 15 minutes with minimal cleanup. Yea, could do the same in the oven but this is more convenient. Makes a hell of a pork schnitzel/pork chops as well... That being said - I got a big one and it takes up a lot of counter space... A nice to have thing in the kitchen but not a must have...
  14. When I saw your original post, I thought you were talking about the "other" Raja's (Rajawongse) as the "good" Raja's was on Soi 4 at the Nana entrance. They've moved to the location by the escalator on Sukhumvit since my last trip there... Raja's Fashions it the one all the expats use - the "other" one is where the taxis will take you if you just say "Raja's"... (avoid)
  15. I've been using Raja's Fashions for years (it appears that have moved since my last visit to BKK as they used to be at the entrance to Nana Plaza). Bobby has a photographic memory and remembers your name even if it's been years since the last visit. I call them every few years and they ship me another batch of shirts as they have my measurements. As mentioned above, the key is to have some time for the followup fittings - that and making sure the quality of the fabric is good...
  16. Holds an ice chest full of beer... We bought this a few years ago when living in Copenhagen to haul kids around town. Now use it to carry lawn chairs and ice chest at outdoor concerts and festivals nearby...
  17. To register a golf cart as a LSV in Texas, you need to have the following on the cart: a normal maximum speed of 20-25 mph (LSV) or 20-35 mph (NEV) seat belts head and tail lights a windshield a parking brake turn signals rear-view mirrors brake lights reflectors a valid 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). State law allows for use of golf carts with a slow-moving vehicle emblem in the following situations: in master planned communities with a uniform set of restrictive covenants in place, on public or private beaches, during the daytime and no more than two miles from where the owner usually parks the golf cart and for transportation to or from a golf course, or to cross intersections, including a road or street that has a posted speed limit of no more than 35 miles per hour. I've been pulled over 2x in my neighborhood where the sheriff wasn't aware of these laws even though my house is on a golf course and in a master planned community with restrictive covenants in place (The Woodlands). Didn't get a ticket but was told to get off the streets... If I'm not mistaken, New Braunfels now allows golf cars on the streets in the city.
  18. That was '85 - I remember seeing her...
  19. It's seasonal (i.e. not in stores now) and even on their website, next to nothing...
  20. Aargh, it was the 13th, not the 18th as I read it wrong and left $300 in my shopping cart...
  21. Unfortunately, Academy doesn't carry skis, wakeboards or wakesurf boards (at least not that I've found...)
  22. Just an FYI that Dick's has most of their towable water sports equipment at 50% until the 18th...
  23. Yup, standard issue Class II orange vests to make boats legal. Didn't look/ask about tow ropes... You also have to take the Texas boater safety course and do a 3 hour check ride before they turn you loose...
  24. Bit the bullet and joined the Freedom Boat club on Conroe. Was pretty impressed with the boats they had at the dock (all in great shape) and only 2 boats were out when we stopped by this afternoon... Wake/surfwake, fishing and pontoon boats... living 30 minutes door to door sealed the deal... now need to buy some tubes and wakesurf boards...
