  1. The Texas on that album is the only song included not from 99, despite the title. It was from 11/20/98 at Liberty lunch, which is easily one of the best shows I’ve ever been at. They opened the two night run with this Texas and blew it out from there. To make this Dead related, they played Sitting On Top of the World later in the set and then opened set two with Best Feeling>Fire on the Mountain with Keller Williams joining in. Fucking Amazing!!!
  2. Just saw this. My grandfather passed away 24 years ago and was a Sea Bee on Okinawa and Tinian. Worked as a surveyor and claimed to have helped with building the runway the Enola Gay took off from (but who knows) he was on Okinawa when a typhoon blew thru just prior to game 7 of the Cubs Tigers World Series. He was a Cubs fan and it took them a week to find out the result. sorry about your Granddad. I am sure he was a bad ass.
  3. On vacation and sliced my foot to shreds yesterday on a rental boat and I can’t go into the water for the remainder of the week on a beach vacation. while the kids and ladies shop I am sitting on the porch drinking beer and listening to the Hampton 89 warlocks set. It is in a heated race with Alpine Valley (Downhill from Here) for my favorite shows of the year. I might have to have an edible to make my bad luck more bearable. All things considered, this still beats working!
  4. I need to find the 1 old Legion of Mary show I have on tape. I am not sure of the date, but I think it was from April of 75. I wish I had it digitized. I am slightly obsessed with their version of Freedom Jazz Dance. Here is a different version of the song from my tape: for me, what they do here is on the level of the best stuff the Dead ever did. John Kahn was such a bad ass.
  5. I went to this at Reunion Arena at age 11. Whitesnake opened. First big concert I ever went to. Thank god we were lower balcony, because I was really small and wouldn’t have fared well. Awesome show!
  6. I am going to check out 4/24/78 from Normal, IL today (Dave’s Picks 7). So many songs from this show rate pretty high on heady version (The music Never Stopped, Me and My Uncle>Big River, Brown Eyed Women, S>F, Werewolves of London, etc), but I never have been able to get into this Spring 78 tour. Not sure why, but I think its 43rd anniversary is a good reason to give it another chance.
  7. Right now I am listening to KVHW 7/31/99. Really good. earlier I dug out my Europe 72 Vol 2 vinyl. Every side of this one slams. The Good Lovin has such a great groove and Pigpen’s improv is awesome. It is shocking this did not make the Hundred Year Hall release. What a show if this and the Dire Wolf were scraps that would not fit. The slowish laid back Deal is so different from later versions. It doesn’t hit any peaks, but the groove is perfect. So many great things on here. I think it topped Vol. 1.
  8. Thanks for the reminder about It’s Up to You. That and My Favorite things were my two favorite things from that Phil and Friends show. I needed some good unfamiliar instrumental music while working on the last bit of a Master’s degree. I have been streaming some KVHW on the Relisten app and am enjoying it. The AUD tapes are fantastic. A bunch were transferred by Charlie Miller and that is always a good sign. A few years ago I saw Bob play at the Moody with the guys from the National and Kimock. I was disappointed that he did not take too many solos since I enjoy his playing whenever I come across it.
  9. That Fillmore 69 box set is great. I’ve mostly listened to the 28th and the 1st, but need to go back to the 2nd. I remember being a big fan of the last disc. also, if I remember correctly, the New Potato Caboose on the bonus disc (6/8/69) has an epic Phil jam in it.
  10. I saw this posted in the covers thread and thought it belonged here. Fucking brilliant version. FWIW, I have seen both The Gourds and Bruce Robison play the stage outside my kids elementary school here in Austin. They both have connections to the hood and put on great shows. Bruce covered Tennessee Jed. He is near the top of my list of artists to see every chance I get.
  11. I really like that first set. The Masterpiece and Bird Song are both really nice versions. Amazing the bird song was Branford’s first time playing with them. He found his space from the start.
  12. Guilty pleasure for sure, but I feel no shame.
  13. Agreed! while we are talking about 76, the 7/17/76 show is fantastic. The jam that starts with Comes. Time is as good as it gets. The filler from the previous night on the Dave’s Picks release is great too. These two shows, along with the September 76 releases, feel a bit different from the June 76 stuff. It is so fun to hear their evolution over such a short time frame.
  14. I really like this release. I bought it because the 18th is the day I was born, but 76 has grown on me. The crazy fingers is great and I love mission in the rain. today on TIGDH I caught 3/26/73 truckin>weather report prelude>wharf rat. There was a really nice jam in one of the >’s. It was unique and just another confirmation of why that is my favorite era.
  15. There is a great part in the jam where Jerry drops out (broken string I think). Anyway Keith takes a solo and kills it. I wish he had more opportunities.
  16. https://vintagevinyl.com/UPC/848064011385 the folks here seem to have the same recollection about it being considered for the first Dick’s Picks that I have. I am pretty sure I read or saw an interview with Dave where he mentioned this as being one of the reasons he closed the series with this release. lighten up Francis
  17. Just saw this. What a great show! My highlights match up with yours. I was also super pumped for the Touch opener and I really like that Rain encore.
  18. My brother traded DATs in the 90’s and this was one of the crispiest tapes he spun me. I still think that old tape sounds better than the CD, we’ll see how it stacks up to the vinyl. It was one of my 2 or 3 most listened to tapes. I made it through the 1st set yesterday and it is still pretty great. The Bird Song, Cumberland, Ramble on Rose, Black throated wind, Big River, and Playin are all among my favorite versions, and the rest is really good too.(China>Rider, loser, etc.) I can’t wait for the Dark Star. The Mind Left Body at the end is my favorite one. They do it in a psychedelic bluegrass style that flows into the Morning Dew.
  19. I just got this. It is as good a show as they ever played. I remember reading that it was on the short list for Dick’s Picks Vol 1, but they couldn’t get a complete show approved. the Cumberland is easily my favorite version and most of the other songs rank amongst my favorite 2 or 3 versions. I cannot wait to give it a spin.
  20. I am a fan of those you mentioned. the tighten up jam in 10/31/71 is great. Another favorite my brother spun for me in the tape days is 9/19/70. The closing sequence of Dark Star through Lovelight just rages throughout. I wish Bear didn’t get busted because the tapes from that era are spotty once he wasn’t touring. This one has a really high quality SBD out there of the section above.
  21. For me, this is my favorite Dark Star ever. Jazzy, exploratory, when the get to freak out land, they pull it back pretty quickly. One of my favorite ways to spend 35 minutes. and I only did acid twice, at my first two Dead shows in 94. pretty incredible.
  22. Today I checked out 3/24/73 and 6/24/74, both are Dave’s Picks from the last couple years. the 73 show has a real nice China>Rider and a He’s Gone>Truckin>Jam>Dark Star. The DS has to be one of the shortest ever at ~4 min, but the preceding 20+ min jam makes it feel bigger. The 74 show at the Jai-Alai Fronton has some great jams. I thought the versions of To Lay Me Down and Ship of Fools are as good or better than any I’ve ever heard.
  23. Listening to 2/24/74 tonight. I caught the Dark Star> Dew on TIGDH on my way home from work and had to put it on. Just a fantastic show. It is one of my favorite shows from one of my favorite years. Bill Graham gives a great introduction right before they kick into US Blues: ”Whatever is going on in the rest of the world, if it’s wars, or kidnappings, or crimes, this is a peaceful Sunday night with the Grateful Dead” This show does make for a peaceful night.
