  1. The answer has to do with the TJ surgery he's going to have in about 8 months.
  2. I think Rice is definitely a better school in general. I also am aware that certain majors are considered better at UT than at Rice (including my own major). I also think there are a lot of other viable reasons why to choose UT over Rice, so the mere names on there doesn't necessarily make me think one way or the other about the applicant. Two quality schools offering different things. What I'm talking about are the UTs versus places that are in the 150s in rankings. Those make a difference to me.
  3. I was always meh on this. Felt it was Braveheart 2, The Pale Imitation.
  4. That NYT article the other day on Texas Rs leading off with the description of Perry and moving into today I thought was pretty good on this. Perry kept himself very mobile and could fit the whims of the day. Patrick has hardened himself on being a culture warrior and won't be able to maneuver to fit future popular opinions.
  5. What you see are big differences in rankings, I don't think of as that big. The differences between Rice, Texas, and A&M are small enough that it doesn't really harden my opinion of them one way or the other in the stuff I've been involved in. Although the Rice to A&M spread starts to get there and would be weighing on my mind as potentially important. Anyway, your knowledge of the hiring practices in individual businesses throughout innumerous fields is pretty impressive.
  6. Small differences like UT and UF don’t matter, especially where the places are so geographically distant. There are a 1000 good reasons any particular individual would choose one over the other. But UT versus some 100+ ranked Texas school or something does. I begin with the assumption someone ‘chose’ [generic Texas school] over UT because of reasons of ability.
  7. it's hard to say how much an individual candidate moves things when every election seems to be more about the national implications than the previous.

  10. i was 21 and watched them collapse on tv with my roommates. i remember looking at one and saying "we just saw a bunch a people die." i think i said that out loud to remind myself that it was real and not some action film.
  11. Teigen and Ellen’s power combined. Oh man. Please let trump do some hateful tweet of a clip of that show in response.
  12. Well, my thoughts may be simplistic, but none of those “why this is bad news for the GOP” tweets can be right. Either this is a meaningless special election that we can extrapolate nothing from, or it indicates basically a hold serve —to slight backslide for Ds since 2018. If the GOP guys with smaller PVIs won then, there is no reason from this to think they wouldn’t win again.
  13. He was closer to a win when they were actively stuffing the ballot box. How is this a positive? doesnt this represents a backslide from 2018?

  15. For the first time ever, user name checks out. But I'll say that is the best resignation letter I've seen from any of these stooges. Clearly intended to be read as 'fuck this place.' As opposed to Pruitt's weepy letter of prostration and adulation about the greatest 4 months of his life, probably recited while holding up a boombox playing In Your Eyes.
  16. "He's not hurting the people he's supposed to be hurting," Dem version.
  17. Empower Texas trying to read the tea leaves.
  18. They’re dead, Jim. GOP can’t sit by while the suburbs revolt. And you can’t pass GOP gun control and expect any sort of voter enthusiasm.
  19. Bolton: “why should I resign? He’s the one that sucks.”
  20. got through bolton and a president constantly underwater in polls with no war is the biggest upset of the administration
  21. Not per capita is the big take away there. Of course Michigan and Texas have more than Ca Tech. Like, 30 people there.
  22. This is all just to make sure nothing goes haywire at the 11th hour, correct? It seemed to me very clearly that he was going to win.
  23. Anyone dig up a pic of her doing a hook em from her UT days?
  24. Michael Lewis's latest book is called the 5th Risk and it's largely about garbage government. By coincidence, one of its big examples in there is about how good the NOAA has become at both predicting weather lately and using people with insight in communications about how to best transmit that information such that it is usable for the masses. Lifesaving stuff. And he talks about how it has been sabotaged by Trump's people so that weather businesses (can't remember which) can look better than what the government says. Now it is front page news that the NOAA is being attacked for putting out correct information.
