  1. The whole thing needs to be rebuilt/refurbished from what I understand and that the private company running the thing would need public help for it to financially pencil out. I had to drive to the top last August, but it was awesome. Paved road to top but construction at summit limited parking. I got there early enough to avoid being forced on to a (free) shuttle bus from one of the mid elevation parking areas.
  2. I’m drinking this tonight: http://seattlerefined.com/eat-drink/well80-brewhouse-recreates-olympia-brewings-first-ever-lager-recipe It’s a flavorful light beer. It’s a shame that it is just a limited run to coincide with the two local beer festivals. Anyone in Portland or Seattle area next weekend should beeline down/up to Tumwater for their beer festival.
  3. Anyone “climb” Wheeler Peak (NM) via the Williams Lake trail? I’m going late August. I know to start early to avoid afternoon lightning. Any other tips?
  4. Great showing by Mariners fans in Cooperstown. Far and away the second most represented fan base behind the local Yankees fans. Brian Kenny even thanked Mariners fans for our impressive attendance after Edgar’s induction speech. I’ll be back for Ichiro’s induction for sure.
  5. Anyone going to Cooperstown on Sunday?
  6. It sounds like you are enjoying your trip. If the weather is cooperating staying on Lake Otsego is great. Late winter is also great along the lake when you can ice fish. I’ll be in Cooperstown in a few weeks to see Edgar Martinez get inducted into the HOF with a bunch of pitchers he dominated against such as Mariano Rivera and Mike Mussina.
  7. On a clear day the Rocky Butte hike is worthwhile. It is one of the extinct? volcanoes within the city. I am sure Forest Park and West Hills have some good hikes too but I haven’t done any of them. This should be a good resource: Oregonhikers.org Portland & Willamette Valley hikes
  8. I visited there last August for a Rockies game. There are a lot of breweries near Coors Field. I’m not big into IPAs either and found plenty of good beer. The River North (Rino) neighborhood directly to the NE of Coors Field is being rapidly redeveloped and is loaded with places to eat and drink.
  9. Rent a canoe at the WAC at UW if you are in the city.
  10. About 50 people line shortly before 10:30am. Only 10 to 15 at 10:00am
  11. I appreciate all the suggestions! I had a great trip and for the most part dodged the worst of the weather. Due to the threat of bad weather last Tuesday I was able to score front row club seats for under $20 at GLP for the Rangers game. The bad weather was to the north over Denton so no delays plus bonus baseball. I ignored the suggestion to not stay in Arlington but for this short trip I made the right call. The next trip I’ll probably stay in Dallas. Hit Pecan Lodge first after picking up the rental car at DFW. Line wasn’t terrible so I stayed in it while I pondered my order. I appreciate the heads up on the bar tip above. The brisket was excellent that day, the tamales just ok. The Hefeweizen from Legal Draft of Arlington I had there may have been my favorite beer. For breweries I visited Braindead, Deep Ellum, Four Corners, and Peticolas in Dallas, Cowtown and HopFusion in Fort Worth, and Humperdinck’s in Arlington. All had at least one beer I really enjoyed. The AT&T Stadium tour is totally worth it if you can go during a slower time. I was with a small group so we got to visit Jerry Jones’s viewing box, the Cowboys locker room, the cheerleaders locker room, and the press box. Cattleacks was fantastic. I got there early and was one of the first in line. Get there early if you ever go. Line gets long and moves slow, but the food is way worth it.
  12. Do the walk not the UBER. It is generally safe but especially safe during games. You’ll be be a part of the game day crowd. Pioneer Square is the traditional night life epicenter of Seattle so there is a lot of flow between there and SODO (stadium area) during Seahawks, Sounders, and M’s games. The Sounders fans and the team band march from Pioneer Square to CenturyLink Field for every game!
  13. The Cowboys Stadium suggestion is a good one, especially since the whole point of my upcoming trip is to visit a sports venue. I try to do at least one baseball trip a season. Last year I did the five California ballparks in six days.
  14. I fly out Thursday afternoon so I am doing Cattleack instead. If Panther City was open on Wednesday I’d give them a shot. Appreciate the suggestions!
  15. I’ll be staying just east of Six Flags in Arlington. I figure it is good central location since I fly in and out of DFW, am going to a baseball game, and want to see things in both Fort Worth and Dallas.
  16. I am headed to Dallas / Fort Worth for 48 hours later this month to see the ballpark in Arlington for its final season. On the agenda other than baseball is “Pecan Lodge” (around 1:00pm on a Tues.), Reunion Tower afterwards, get in line at “Cattleacks” at 10:00am on Thurs., and Whataburger whenever I can fit it in. Any other recommendations? I like local breweries with growlers (I collect glass growlers). I’ll be there noonish Tuesday through noonish on a Thursday with a car. I appreciate any suggestions!
  17. Where are you staying? Near Cooperstown I recommend Council Rock Brewery for food and beer. Cooperstown Brewing, Red Shed Brewing, & Brewery Ommegang for beer. All south of the village and require a drive. You can do it in a simple loop. In Cooperstown village itself the Main Street strip and the HOF itself are must sees. I’d also recommend walking down to Otsego Lake (aka Lake Glimmerglass from the James Fenimore Cooper sagas), the source of the Susquehanna River. I also like the New York State Historical Society’s “Farmers Museum.” If you are staying in Oneonta, “Brooks BBQ” is famous for their chicken. Just south of Oneonta is the NW edge of the Catskills and some surprising gems. “Breakfast Club” in the tiny village of Jefferson for breakfast, “Tulip and Rose” in Franklin for dinner (menu changes weekly, check online on Tuesdays for new menu), “Sal’s Meat Center” in Bloomville for subs, “Table on Ten” also in Bloomville for oven fired pizza (way limited hours & reservations required ), “Mama Maria’s” north of Stamford for “east coast” pizza.
  18. Seeing all the HOFers on stage and in the parade is awesome. So is strolling down Main Street seeing all the former players and other celebrities signing autographs. My advice for the hall itself is to go right when they open and do the opposite of the crowd by starting on the first floor, then head to the top floor and work your way down.
  19. Go! I did Griffey’s and well worth it! Fly into your favorite NYC area airport mid week, pick a cool scenic way north, definitely visit the HOF itself, parade on Sat., and ceremony on Sun. Parade and ceremony are free. They keep building more hotels south of Cooperstown into Oneonta so it is now cheaper to stay closer in than it used to be. Six craft breweries nearby if you are into that. Also decent eats if you are willing to venture into the peripheral villages.
  20. Edgar Martinez vs.: Mariano Rivera - .579 avg, .579 ob%, 1.053 slg Mike Mussina - .307 avg, .337 ob%, .627 slg Roy Halladay - .444 avg, .474 ob%, .722 slg
  21. Do both! Smart micro local breweries do both. The growler glass is a great souvenir, advirtising mechanism. A few local brewpubs around me are now crowler only. I no longer go. They charge me more AND it takes more employee time to fill. The growler is hyper local as you get! I now actively boycott anti-growler “local” microbreweries.
  22. Thanks for all the tips. I had a great trip. The zoo is incredible and Petco Park is a must see for baseball fans. Of stuff not mentioned above I enjoyed Mission Brewery a few blocks from Petco Park just past the tailgate parking lot. There are lot of craft beer options between Little Italy and Petco Park and I visited 6 of them. AleSmith produced the best beers I had during my trip. There is a huge cluster of breweries north of Miramar and they are one of them.
  23. Upstate NY has lots of gems. It's a shame they are in the same state and have the same mega-city taxes and regulations as NYC.
  24. Eugene sucks ass when compared to other similar sized or smaller PNW cities. Bellingham or Bend for example.
  25. I'm looking for some San Diego recs. Must see destinations, food, must visit craft breweries, cool hikes, etc. I already have the zoo, U.S.S. Midway, and a Padres game on the agenda. I'm also thinking of doing the Cowles Mountain hike.
