  1. Hadn’t heard that before (other than whitefish being the “rich” area) but all three make sense. Columbia Falls had an aluminum smelter for decades (that’s now a superfund site), but yes, has come a long way. And yeah, Kalispell and Whitefish aren’t that much farther to the park and will have a lot more lodging options
  2. Idk why is getting posted today, but ahh memories. and the pitch location of that last one. Ooof (cue: “almost like he knew what was coming” or “that’s too similar to Kendrick” jokes) https://www.instagram.com/p/C2NMpgsuyJL/?igsh=ZDE1MWVjZGVmZQ==
  3. Check out Flathead Lake. I liked Polson. whitefish is great to spend a day, day and a half in. I didn’t do much of the rest of the state. On one of my trips we came through Yellowstone as well. Had dinner in Bozeman but that was all we had time for there. The itinerary I mapped out for us between Yellowstone and Whitefish/Columbia Falls had us spending the night in Butte (this was just my girlfriend and I, so sans kids). I wouldn’t exactly recommend that, but we did check out the superfund site which was really interesting (to me at least). I’ll look back at the hikes we liked. I recall Avalanche Lake which is on the main road just before you start the climb on the GTSR road (ask your 7/8 yo to figure out why some of the trees that are down fell “uphill”) . and then at the top/Logan’s Pass, Hidden Lake is super easy and fun for seeing wildlife (marmots and mountain goats, mostly). And going the other way, try some of the Highline. Many Glacier has some beautiful hikes as well, but that part of the park is also a haul to get to and I think the ones I did there were a hit more challenging (may have just been my girlfriend and I), but Iceberg Lake is one I remember that was excellent and may be doable since it sounds like your 7 yo is not like mine and tolerates hikes well. North Fork/Bowman Lake, make sure to bring bug spray (same for avalanche lake). There is a nice easy hike along the lakeshore to give you different views of the lake. You can branch off and start climbing towards Numa Fire Lookout (but going all the way was one of the harder/longer hikes I did). Views were incredible but definitely not one for the whole family. If I think of more, I’ll post And damn I miss Glacier. Not in the cards this year, but definitely want to get back sooner than later. Would LOVE to find a second home up there…or even just a plot to building something on in the future… but poking around and looking at prices a few months ago, that’s a big nope.
  4. Columbia Falls is great but likely going to be pricey (but everything is with that proximity to the park). I went with an Airbnb so not much help on specific recommendations on cabins. Columbia Falls has a great weekly farmers market during the summer (was on Thursdays a few years ago). The place also doubles as a music venue with some decent acts occasionally if you’re in to that. not much help on recommendations for water (pool, etc) at the place you’re staying, but we did a half day rafting trip with Glacier Raft Company. They were good and I would recommend. But I get the sense all of them are about the same and can’t go wrong with any of them. As far as “free” water, my kids (8 and 6 at the time) had a blast just splashing around Lake McDonald and Bowman Lake. The latter is a haul to get to (and requires reservation, see below) and used to be not as popular with it being off the beaten path, but that has all changed. The view and peacefulness of it is amazing though. Make sure to watch the Glacier NPS website/social media. Need a reservation to enter most areas of the park between 6a-3p. Looks like this year they are available on a daily rolling basis 120 days out (e.g. reservation for July 1 goes on sale ~March 1). They go QUICK. But if you miss out, I think they hold some back that they put on sale the day before. At least that’s what they did a few years ago. I’ll go back and read what I posted on this thread in the past and think back on what else we did, but let me know if you have any other specific questions or ages of the kids. I can probably give good recs on a few hikes regardless of age.
  5. That seems dumb and I’m certainly hoping that BS. a rogue email sets policy? nice precedent if true
  6. It helps ensure peak grid demand for two extra hours because everyone will be home from 8-9:30 instead of getting everyone out of the house and burning gas from 6-7:30 so dumb
  7. Hey they gonna wait all the way to 5pm. this is a decision they could have made 48 hours ago (or at least 10am this morning after seeing the road conditions$ nothing has changed
  8. lucky. I’m the fortunate one with the kids this go round one came down with something this morning. I’m on hour #2 of monopoly with the other one. I did teach him the finer points of winning at Nintendo PunchOut earlier today though. Suck it, Glass Joe. You should have stayed retired 30 years ago
  9. Except there is no ice but I expected last Thursday we’d get a closure Tuesday due to “cold”, but still annoyed
  10. I like the “at this time” any outages are local/not the grid. come 8am?
  11. Which is smart because that’s been way more entertaining than the product on the field
  12. Is your picture washed out (hazy, light)? Or just not crisp? Mine was the former and found an answer
  13. So just another normal Saturday
  14. Me reading all of these dubon posts:
  15. Which makes no sense. because the temps on Monday/Tuesday are still going to be about 5-10 higher than the level they keep the thermostat in that store.
  16. i hope it’s just Tuesday. I would be surprised if we hit the weekend before districts like AISD announce it. they’ll blame it on the forecasted windchill Tuesday morning at the bus stop for little Johnny so they don’t have to wait and see if there is precip. (And/or “we gotta get above freezing to check and make no sure no busted pipes!”)
  17. I’m glad the wife decided to go last night at 9:30 we even got eggs!
  18. So i guess now both Buffalo and Miami are wishing they had a do over Sunday to let Miami win.
  19. Spoken like a knuckle dragger that’s never stolen $100 million.
  20. I’m botching the terminology. And I’m modest in what I’m trying to power. I’m talking about wiring this into a 30 amp breaker in the electrical panel and hooking it up to a generator: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Reliance-Controls-30-Amp-Power-Inlet-Box-PB30/202213702 And had a friend spend less than an hour helping hook it up so didn’t have labor costs, but I was $930 all-in on parts/materials with a 5,500 watt champion generator driving $730 of that. This was a year ago. (About a month before the ice storm) yes, you have to get out in the cold and flip all of the breakers and hook/start up the generator. Felt that was worth it vs the exponentially higher cost of a more automatic solution. I have a ~1,500 sq ft home. That size generator won’t completely power the entire house, but will handle just about everything on at once other than the oven and microwave (range and water heater are gas)
  21. I know not everyone has the means, but for those that do, there really is no excuse, just flat laziness/stubbornness, for every homeowner in this state that doesn’t have a generator/transfer switch. for the price of a mid-level TV you’ve insured you’ll be fine the next time one of these events happens. (And you’ve got a cool generator to do other stuff with if you need to)
  22. The 40 lb propane tank I bought out for delivery to Home Depot today better not get “lost”
