It wasn't tax reform. It was a tax cut.

It was ultimately both. There are a number of good components in what was passed including a simplification of filing for a majority of tax payers and an attempted equalization of taxes across multiple entity structures.

  2. I seriously don’t get how my crappy starters are getting used. Richards throws 73 pitches today and gets pulled with a 4-1 lead at the end of the 5th. He has given up 3 combined runs over his last three starts and has pitched 5, 4.1, and 5 innings.

A decent 75 foot yacht is about 3 million dollars minimum for a gently used one, and a full time crew of 3 and costs about half a million a year to run. On top of that you physically couldn't get one to Lake Travis.

A Horizon is also basically a floating piece of Tupperware. With my conversations with GFTMR, I'm pretty sure he is looking for something a little different.

Which was my point that a 75 foot boat doesn’t tell you anything. That’s anywhere from less than a $100k used houseboat you can run yourself on a lake/river to bumping 8 figures for a new Viking convertible. Where do you want to use it, do you want to run it yourself, is 75 ft pulled out of the air or is there a reason behind it, etc? If cabin space is the main thing and you are looking for gulf use, you can get a 50ish foot OA Pilothouse that will have three berths and be much easier to deal with.

  4. Also, if your boating background is limited or you have no big boat experience, don’t even think about stepping into that size boat. If you’re on the lake/river you can find a 40 foot Gibson that will break you in much easier and serve your needs for a while.

    Surly 1%'er post coming up.

Long story short, Mrs. FromTheMailRoom has decided she wants a higher end, large boat.  This is something completely out of my wheelhouse, so I need a little guidance.  She want's something 75 ft+ that has a motor and not a sail.  Something with 2+ cabins in case we wanted to stay on it overnight and needs to be freshwater.

Does anyone have any experience with this?  She said freshwater but I think putting it on Lake Travis is a terrible idea.   Does it make sense to have something like that in the gulf?  Is it something best to go through a manufacturer for or is there some type of brokerage that could possibly locate one?  What kind of things should I be looking for?

No you're not getting pictures of my wife.

For the record a ‘75 foot boat is a pretty broad range and can go anywhere from a shaggy 10%er to a shaggy a .00001%er. They are very specific to the use you are looking for and where you plan to use it. I know a number of people that run 75+ foot Sumerset/Fantasy/Horizon’s which are perfect for lake/river use and can be had in the low to mid 6 figures. If you are looking for Gulf use, you’re looking for something completely different and need a big budget. Then the size depends completely on the style you are looking for. You could get two berths in the 50 foot range if you look at trawlers like Ocean Alexander’s and similar styles and find them in the mid 6 figures. If you want to cover more ground more quickly, you’ve got to go up in size for the same interior space and your budget will get into 7 figures quickly.

You are not improving your argument here.

There is no argument, a pontoon is perfect if you have kids, carry a bunch of people, etc. I’m on my 6th or 7th wakeboard boat and if I could only have one boat at this point it would be a pontoon. I don’t have to worry about dogs on it, kids eating on it, pulling it into the beach, etc. Luckily, I don’t have to choose and have multiple boats. I’m closing in on 40, my water activities have changed.

Getting a pontoon boat is easy, all you have to do is give up all your self respect.

Pontoons are awesome. I pull mine out into the cove and then get a ride on the jet ski back to get the wakeboard boat. The pontoon serves as the floating dock where the kids can eat, hang out on, jump off of,  the women stay on it, etc and it keeps all that shit off my wakeboard boat.

Are there any piers to fish around there?  If I can't get a spot to wade, I'll probably take the kids to soak some bait at a pier or something.

Not in Destin, there is one in Fort Walton which is less than 10 minutes from the Harborwalk area. A lot depends on where you stay. If you are on the west end of Destin you can drive to FWB or fish the other side of East Pass (beach access and also can fish the rocks along the pass and the bridge pilings) all the way down to FWB fishing the gulf or bay side. If you are on the east end, that’s a pretty good drive so I would go to the 331 bridge across the bay and fish the rocks/bridge there.

Again, you can catch fish from the beach anywhere, it’s just different than other coastal areas. You will catch a lot more LadyFish, Spanish Mack, Blue Runners, hardheads, etc and fewer reds or pompanos which you would actually want to eat.

  9. Holy hell, I’ve had a vibration in my steering for the last couple of months. Took it in and had the tire guy check the tires and suspension and nothing. Dealership looked at it and nothing, Figured out this morning that the stupid lane warning was turned on and no one noticed it. It vibrates whenever you get close to a line and it was doing it in corners like there was stress on something in the steering.

Choosing between a big 4 and a mid level firm is the equivalent of having a Kobe beef steak or t-bone. The clients are better, it looks better on a resume, and if you get lucky, one of your clients will hire you.

Most mid tier firms in Houston don’t do a lot of oil and gas either.

Typical Big 4 knob slobbing opinion, which is why I’m anti Big 4. Too many Big 4 people are one trick pony’s that are too specialized and they’re constantly looking for the next step up. I’ve built a pretty large firm of people that rarely move on, like what they do and can serve multiple roles for clients, that also work reasonable hours on an annual basis. Plus, I can assure you as a fairly young MP of a top 120 firm I do pretty well.

However, I did agree that in a bigger city like Houston it makes sense to go Big 4 starting out if you are not planning on staying in public.

  11. I’m a proponent of skipping Big 4 and going to a mid level firm. However, if you are focused on staying in a large city, you’ve pretty well got to go Big 4 at the beginning because the opportunities are more open down the road. You could also look at a second tier like at Grant, BDO, etc.

We'll be there for the first time in early May.  Where would be a good place for an inshore fisherman to do some wading / surf fishing?   I'm willing to go out early but probably wont have the time to get a guided trip.

You’re more limited in and around Destin because it is so over built and there is a fight going constantly regarding property owners right to the beaches. We just surf fish wherever we are staying. There are places around the 331 bridge crossing that are good and around the Destin Harbor bridge that are good. Past that I would look at between Destin/FWB assuming it is allowed in the park area on either the gulf or bay side. You’re not going to find large flats to wade that you can get to by vehicle unless there are some I have missed.

We have had a a Blue Wave and Sea Hunt. Surprisingly I don’t miss the Blue Wave at all. The sea hunt has been an amazing boat so far.

I like the BX 22 BR. Just need to make a decision at some point and get something. I was hoping to get something before our two week trip in May, but I may wait and look around while we are at the coast.

  14. Personally, I’m not a fan of the Yamaha’s. Buy a jet ski if you want a jet ski, buy a boat if you want a boat. Inboards and I/O’s are much more useful boats if you’re pulling things and will have much better fuel consumption numbers. I would go by a pontoon before buying a Yamaha boat. However, try a few out and if that’s what you want then get one. Boats are like guns and tracks, people have their personal preferences.

As far as financing, banks will pretty much go as far out as you want on one.

  15. Destin is too busy at this point but it is the best beach/water of the bunch. You could stay in Fort Waton Beach which is just West of Destin and will have the same beach. I would do OB/Perdido or Fort Walton over Destin that time of the year. OB can be a lot more redneck than Perdido just for the record. There are also barrier islands West of Orange Beach that are also nice although they will have limited activities outside of the beach.
