  1. I realize that the abortion and weed ballot measures are not going to get what they're polling at (both have been polling in the upper 60s). But if they end up anywhere near the 60% threshold for passage, there is a ton of room for growth by both Harris and whoever wins the Senate primary against Rick Scott, and a massive liability for Republicans downballot. For comparison's sake, the Michigan abortion ballot won 56-44 and gutted the GOP at all levels.
  2. I told y'all that if he was the pick, you were gonna love Tim Walz once the word got out about him. Go fuck 'em up, Coach.
  3. The Minneapolis riots may be tried to use as a cudgel, but Walz had the Guard called up as soon as state law allowed him. Unfortunately, city management had to ask first, and by the time they did shit had gone totally sideways. Speaking of the Minnesota Guard, someone tried to Swift Boat him in the deep stretch of his 2018 campaign, by falsely accusing him of rank embellishment. The Guard rather quickly put a halt to this attempt. Unfortunately, this is the case. MN-1, the USHoR district he won in the 2006 blue wave, has gotten really, really Trumpy. I know several farmers who are in that district, and to a man they think he's a liburrl poser. Then again, most of them also think that the tax dollars subsidize the city slickers. The reverse is actually true.
  4. ...and the winter before had the second-most snow ever recorded. Even if you include the Fort Snelling pioneer records. It started snowing in mid-November and that shit didn't stop until April. Sorry, but it's too fucking hot in KC.
  5. Apparently the beam final was a complete train wreck. Floor final up now. Biles and Chiles up shortly. Andrande was terrific.
  6. Obligatory Those of you that didn't grow up in the upper Midwest are fortunate enough not to have been subjected to a Menards spot in every commercial break since 1980. Tim Walz is a damn fine governor and would be a terrific VP. Given the baggage that's coming out on Shapiro, I'd be shocked if it's not Walz.
  7. I'm watching the replay of the womens road bike race. When Faulkner made her move at the end, why didn't the other chasers immediately try to run her down?
  8. Watch the medal ceremony of the heavyweight judo from earlier today. It's cool to hear a jacked up French crowd belt out La Marseillaise.
  9. 13:23 for the first 5K. These guys are going to be 7 minutes+ faster for 10K than the fastest I've ever drug my ass through 5K. Pace slowing down here on lap 21, but don't expect that to keep up.
  10. One minor correction. And if you read the NYT article on Suni, she really fought through some heavy shit to get back to the Olympics. You're goddam right that's America.
  11. Of all the excellent options out there for the VP pick, that may be the worst one of the lot.
  12. 13.867 It's go time
  13. Beats hell out of a deconstructed hamburger, and then throw in a Red Stripe.
  14. It's really strange to see such a huge gap between Trump/Scott and the no side of the amendments. The Michigan amendment passed 56-44, and it swept the GOP completely out of state government. Then again, this is Florida we're talking about.
  15. Forget the Rotel. It is too spicy for the Scandinavian palate.
  16. Rafa off to an awful start vs. Djokovic. Probably the best thing to watch this morning.
  17. I grilled juicy Lucy's last night. The only catch is that the cheese filling temperature is roughly the same as the surface of Mercury, so be careful with the first few bites
  18. Yup. It would be a blockbuster upset if either of the ballot measures pass due to needing 60% +1. However, IMHO, if the margin on that ends up anywhere close to passing, that means massive problems for the rest of the GOP ticket downballot. I don't know if that would get Harris across, but could it bury Tim Scott? Yup. As for Walz, the only question mark I can remember is that he was falsely accused of embellishing his rank when he left the Minnesota National Guard. The public affairs officer made short work of the accusation.
  19. Play La Marseillaise. PLAY IT!
  20. The sound mixer is doing an awful job. Commentators mikes are way too loud, the main event audio feed way too low.
  21. I'm liking this as well. One thing that Mike Tirico is borrowing from other English-language telecasts is the idea of saying as little as possible. If Costas were still the host he still wouldn't have shut up.
  22. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan would succeed him, and she was a mover and shaker in the aforementioned Legislature prior to being named Gov. Walz's running mate. I believe she would also be the first Native American governor in the US.
  23. The rest of America is learning what us Minnesotans have known for a while: he's a damn effective governor. Alongside a DFL Legislature, they are a big fan of competent governance. Among other things, his administration had the unemployment system ready to roll and fully funded when the COVID shutdowns sent everyone to the unemployment line. I'd be sad to lose him to the Vice Presidency, but the DFL bench is deep here and I'm not worried about any potential replacements.
