I found a youtube channel over the weekend, a guy that repairs old watches, like Rolex or Omega. He repaired a Rolex for this woman, her dad wore it daily for 50 years and she fucked it up after she had inherited it. The value of the watch was about $30k. I got to thinking, would I sell the watch for that much? I think I would. Then I wondered exactly how much "sentimental" stuff do I have? Am I a sentimental person in any way? My grandfather died before I was born. All I have of his is a single shot 12 gauge and his pocket watch (some off brand). How much would it take to get those from me? If a guy offered me $1000 for the watch, I'd sell it in a heartbeat. Might take more for the shotgun, I dunno. I'm not broke, so maybe that makes a difference.
My wife is different. She has this teddy bear, the last thing her dad ever bought her before he died (fuck cancer), she was 9. She has always said it was priceless to her but I asked, how much would it take? What if she was offered a million bucks? She said no but it would be tempting. Me? I'd like to think my dad would want me to sell the bear and enjoy the money. A million dollars is serious money.
I racked my brain to think of anything that I just couldn't part with, if the money was right, and I got nothing. Am I just an emotionless robot?

I just read that he won 17 of his 19 grammys AFTER he turned 60. What a fucking legend.

When I've been to Houston it felt like a completely different planet compared to home. Dallas was something I recognized and can wrap my head around. The two of them seemed worlds apart to me, but that's just a visitor's observation.
It's the palm trees. They always catch me off guard when I drive into Houston. "Wait...what?"

Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones just like he's Han Solo. Trying to put someone else in that role will never work. Solo didn't do well for a number of reasons but one was definitely that no one can replicate what Harrison Ford did with that character. I went to see Fury Road because it was a spectacle. I didn't care one bit about Mad Max. If you make an Indiana Jones movie without Harrison Ford, no one shows up for it.
It would work if you picked the right actor. Chris Pratt would've killed in that role IMO.

My dogs are annoying assholes and I use every insult and slur I know against them, almost every day. They take it like a champ.

A guy that uses both "din-din" and "kiddos" in a conversation needs to to be slapped. What's next, "fur-baby"? Slippery slope and all that.

Re: wine glasses. My wife inherited her Grandmother's crystal a few years back. I guess the fact that she was never allowed to touch it as a child has created an incessant desire to touch it and use it as an adult. Every time she gets herself a glass of wine, she uses a an antique, irreplaceable crystal wine glass, and then leaves it on the end table or right on the edge of the kitchen sink. Haven't broken one yet, but I know the day will come and the wailing will be epic. And it will somehow be my fault.
My parents bought all kinds of crystal drinkware when I was a kid. After my mom died 15 years ago, my dad kept pushing us to take some. My sister took a few pieces but he keeps bugging her about it. Now she's trying to get him to pester me instead. Fuck that noise.

In one of the classes, the professors finally got sick of it and said "No, I don't know what you're saying, please explain what you mean", and then proceeded to stare him down. That guy, at least in the class, never said it again.
Maybe you should do the same when she's on the rag. She's gonna be pissed for a few days, but hey she's on the rag, you're not gonna get any anyway.
My wife is a serial "like" abuser. She'll use the word 14 times a sentence. I tease her about it from time to time but it is pretty annoying.
She told me one of her high school teachers just blew up on her one day, unleashed a "OH REALLY? LIKE, LIKE, LIKE, LIKE, LIKE!!!" and embarrassed her. I said "But you never let her stop you. Good for you!". She was unamused.

Thursday/Friday night games are the kind of thing people enjoy as long as their team isn't involved.

Skip is sooo bad, they can't find anyone to work with him.Or they just can't find anyone to work for peanuts. I doubt that many former athletes would turn down a fat paycheck to sit around and argue sports. Most probably do it for free in their spare time.

It's literally laughable.
Reminds me of high school:
"Bro, I had hot sex with this chick last night"
"Who??? Tell me about it"
"Nah, I can't"

I remember reading an interview with John Kruk, after he left ESPN. He had gotten ragged on pretty hard for his preseason predictions in their opening day show, he picked some head scratchers. He said he was told by the producers to pick some weird shit because no one wanted to see every talking head pick the Yankees or whatever team was hot shit back then. He protested but had to do it anyway. After reading that, I always cut these guys some slack for their moronic picks.

I was on a Grayhound bus that broke down in Moriarty, NM in the middle of the night, so this hits close to home.

My kid got her first "real adult" job (her words) and left her retail gig she's had the last couple of years. So now my 50% discount is gone. I had bought some stuff online right after she put in her notice but tried for one final order last night before they turned off her employee account. No dice, the party is over. I'll have to pay full price again, fuck!

When I was a kid the only people that had tattoos were people that led a hard life; bikers, inmates, military men and my mom.
I remember when a guy with a ponytail was often looked at as a bane on society. Now the manbun dudes took his place.

I find not owning a suit to be insane, and I wear shorts and a t shirt most days to work. Weddings, Funerals, and wearing a suit occasionally on Date night gets her panties moist.
Yall showing up to funerals in crocs and cargo shorts?I turn 50 this year, never owned a suit. I just went to a funeral, wore khakis and a plain polo shirt, no logos. Outside of the freemason brethren of the deceased, I was overdressed compared to the rest of the attendees.

Very interesting (and long) Wikipedia page about the military brat “subculture”.
I certainly can relate to most of it, particularly the changing relationships and feelings of not belonging to the civilian society.
Most Surlyites who are former military brats will probably identify with much of it too.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_brat_(U.S._subculture)
A few years ago, I was talking to my kids about growing up in West Germany and how great it was. I decided to plan a trip and jumped online to plot out all the stuff I wanted to show them. Then I got on google maps and discovered that the apartment building I lived in as a kid had been torn down, years ago. They built a hotel there. I was crushed. The trip plans were scrapped. I've decided Thomas Wolfe was right and I can't go home again.

That shit is scary. Swiming at the beach and drowning. Not scuba diving or falling off a boat way off shore, just swimming near a sand bar and the water gets rough and you tire out. Fuck.
At what point does monetary value outweigh sentimental value?

That's right but I know my dad, he's still alive and we have a great relationship. I just can't think of anything of his that I absolutely wouldn't sell, again if the money was good enough.
