Judging from the number of painfully ironic thin blue line punisher stickers I see, it's going to be a loooooong and bloody road.

There is no shortage of bootlickers. I remember before I was a parent inherently thinking that all parents were trying their best and had their child's best interest at heart. It wasn't until I started parenting that I realized that is untrue. All the awful humans have kids too, and while you are trying to teach yours they are also teaching theirs. A large portion of America doesn't seem to understand a lot of awful human beings see policing as a great place to be. It attracts a certain type in my opinion, and there seems to be more of those than there are good ones. Police are being given the benefit of the doubt and they don't deserve it.

We should start a “fuck fucked up people doing fucked up things” thread as well. No fucks given.

We have to hold police to a higher standard. We should. But the idea that people can police themselves is total bullshit. Watching the latest shooting in Austin happen and also realizing that police are also overwhelmed and having to react to multiple crimes happening at the same time. There is obviously a gun ownership issue that needs to be addressed. I know this and anyone thinking it will not be is absolutely fucked in the head. They get paid to do a job. Perfectly. Never mind the bullshit that they see on the regular in us on an every day basis. They see mostly Walmart people on the regular. It’s not like they see us at our best the vast majorly of their careers.

We  are starting to see how much the system is overloaded with violent crimes committed by violent POS people on the regular and expecting cops to react and respond in minutes or seconds not knowing if that person has a weapon. It’s bullshit.

We should expect more from the police but we should also realize that certain people cannot take ownership of their own shit and should be held accountable.  we just keep kicking the can down the road in the hopes that “eventually” with enough money in their pockets, respect and whatever certain people won’t suck at life.

But what if we need someone to respond to us if we need help? a lot of the communities so treated poorly by the police want help during an incident of violence. My cousin’s husband is a sheriff. Won’t say what state but recently there was a “hostage/warrant” situation where they had to shoot the “bad guy” because he had stabbed his wife multiple times and she was bleeding out. They had to take him out. Sorry if I can’t cry a river over that fucking waste of space. What if they had just tasered him! What if he’d still be alive today to get out of jail eventually? And I am sure the cops would not ever have to deal with him again. Right? I seriously wonder how many of yall were cheering the shooter killing all those cops (mostly traffic ones that had nothing to do with his outrage) in Dallas.

Since right at this moment getting rid of all guns is off the table (right now anyway) how in the fuck do yall expect police to react to each person that resists? Three step drop back? Talk to them if they have a weapon they won’t put down? Make the right call every time? They get paid to do a job. We all agree. Do they get paid so much that they shouldn’t take into account their own safety as well.? They make a lot of mistakes. But apparently we as a society should feel more sympathy for the criminal doing criminal things.they know are criminal.

. That is bullshit. that’s a fallacy. It’s okay if a criminal makes mistakes or a series of mistakes. Who cares in a high speed chase of a bullshit warrant if they kill some innocent bystander? The cops should have been chasing them to begin with? Right? They should have just let them go. Onto a life I am sure would amount to jack shit nothing worth anything had they escaped. Forget about any lives that will be lost in that situation. We will just blame someone else if that POS kills someone else down the road and blame the laws and government and guns and not the actual POS for whatever reason that floats your boat.  God forbid Not the actual person that committed those crimes be blamed.  We will find “excuses” for them.

I do t give a fuck if this gets deleted or moved or I get warned but quite honestly the hatred we have for police as a whole is bullshit. They get paid to do a job. that job is very dangerous but we want them to be perfect like an air traffic controller.

The “back the blue” no matter what types are just as obnoxious as the feel sorry for the criminal types. Most of us do not commit violent crimes. Most poor people don’t commit violent crimes. I can say throughout working with the homeless and other charities the poorest people I have met are the most principled and striving g to do the best they can. The people who commit violent crimes are “victims” always blaming other people or circumstances for them. And quite frankly their family members defend them to a fault.

We want police to be in a volatile situation with basically Walmart people on their best day and expect perfect results. Okeedokee!

TLDR: Hold cops accountable. Prosecute them from the federal side. Too difficult of done locally. Do what you can to enforce or create laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals but stop painting cops with one brush and violent criminals with a different one. Bad cops are the same as criminals in my book.  fuck them both. There are good cops out there. Most of us are good people. I do not give two shits about citizens that commit violent crimes. I hope cops that commit murder are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and go to prison.

The police have built their own issues. The response to their presence is because of the way they conduct business in communities, especially disenfranchised ones. My daughter's club volleyball teammate got beaten up by a girl outside of her house. There was video of it. A couple days later the same girl came after her in school. The police came and ended up slamming my daughter's teammate on the ground, causing her to hit her head and have a couple seizures shortly thereafter. This happened just the last week. She is 15 years old.

Criminalizing everything to attack particular communities and now those communities are struggling because their leaders and fathers are behind bars for what would of been small offenses. Instead of using funding to help you made things worse and now you are reaping the fruits of your labor.

The police are what they are because the system is what it is. Until there is a complete change of ideology, and what exactly their job is nothing will be different. They are here to do the bidding of the ruling class, and they fulfill their job responsibilities just as they are supposed to.

Which is funny bc they spent all offseason learning how to become a better out of system team and Smrek being able to terminate junk balls on the right pin. But once we adjusted to her defensively with our floor spacing, Halter was just putting every ball up in the air after set 2

How Texas attacked them is exactly how my daughter's team lost in the playoffs. The team we played served our other OH 29 times and she mentally folded. We are big for high school and go 6'3. 6'3, 6'2, and 6'1 at our middle/RS rotations but the ball was out of system the entire time, so the game fell on two players and they adjusted defensively. Wisky is like us, big, slow, and terrible OOS.

I'm not being obtuse.  You are.  Address the Consumer Confidence Index.  Either tell me you think it means shit or tell me why it's way higher than average?

I am largely in agreement with you Jimmy, but I think you are way off base on how rational you think the American public is. The Consumer Confidence Index is its about as useful as the polling since Trump has been in the picture. Tons of people who vote for that dude don't participate in those things. 2016 and 2020 shoulda told ya.

My income has tripled since 2012

Lol. Your income has tripled because you no longer work entry level jobs. However, young people entering the market are making what, roughly 12% more than that job payed decades ago while trying to buy goods that have doubled. Of course you can find a 2 bedroom in Houston under 2k. If you want to lower your life expectancy you can find one for under 1k. We are talking in decent ares. Yes, 25 year olds aren't buying loaded Suburbans but a KIA Telluride is 42-55k as well.

The point is there are swaths of people who know little to nothing about politics/economics but are upset with the high cost of living and expect the current president to do something about it. How the hell do you think MAGA got into office in the first place? He ran on draining the swamp and lowering costs for the layman. A hell of a lot of stupid people turned out to vote for that clown, and not all of them are Trumpers.

Agreed, but that's a longer-term trend as the result of trickle-down without the trickle.  One president can't unfuck that.

In the shorter term, 5-10 years, things are getting slightly better.

I don't know what your anecdote about being given a used Suburban even means, so I'm not addressing it.  To my point, I can confidently say that the percentage of people my age bitching about nonexistent price issues (gas, etc.) are right wing, and many explicitly blame Biden.

Regardless, the consumer confidence index chart I posted counters any claim that Americans are in general pessimistic about the economy.

Jimmy don't be obtuse. Sure Biden isn't the one responsible for long term inflation but people are struggling just the same. People aren't breaking down the numbers YOY. They are simply just unhappy with the current state of things. Not everyone is a UT grad out there. I am surrounded by Repubs and I hear the same rhetoric, but I also hear the youngs complaints as well.

  7. 12 hours ago, jimmyjazz said:

Consumer Confidence Index doesn't really reflect this pessimism all that much.  I think it's important to question what consumers are actually voicing this "deep economic pessimism".  (hint:  it's MAGAts)

No it's not. Maybe I am off on what you are saying, but are you saying that MAGAts are the ones with deep economic pessimism? If you are then I say you need to hit the streets more. My father-in-law likes to dump their unwanted items on us. I am currently in possession of a 20 year old Suburban that they dropped off on our doorstep(my wife will never say no to her dad). Since they bought it brand new I have the original sticker for it. Fully loaded for its time. 46k sticker. Right now a 24 High Country Burban is 92k, and that's not even 4x4 or 3/4 ton like my old Burban is. Literally doubled in price in 20 years. Incomes haven't doubled in that time frame.

Most of us here are olds. We own our houses, have solid wages, and thus are somewhat disconnected with the poors. However, the younger crowd is really feeling it. I own a house where the going rent rate is double what the mortgage is. Google a decent 2bdroom apt. 2k+ in the Houston area. My daughter is 15, young for my age, but talking to people my age I know who's kids have long since left the nest, they are a couple years out of college and still on the payroll.

You know what's funny though? 2020 was a complete shitshow. Both sides of the aisle can agree on that. Go talk to someone you know that is a Trumper about it. You will be in full agreement of how bad a year it was right up until you remind them that their boy was the overseer. I shit you not. Trumpers act like Biden was in office for Covid.

  10.   Man, trying to watch my daughter play and this at the same time was difficult. I thought my wife was gonna kill me. They had this playing on a tv I could see through a window at the gym we were at. What a great game. I thought we were going to bow out after how we looked against them earlier in the season. Damn solid performance from the girls!!

Fuck Simms, he lost me when they cut to him laughing on the sideline when Applewhite threw a pick.

Applewhite was an asshole and that's straight from guys in the LR. So I give Simms a pass especially how he was treated.

Also to the guys rolling their eyes about the discussion. It's essentially the off season. We got a damn month to fill.

Are you sure 5 wide would have suddenly made those passes not be thrown in the middle of several defenders each time? Would five wide have prevented that sack/fumble? And fuck that garbage anyway, Ced was averaging over 7 yards a carry and you watched that think we should have been going 5 wide? Are you kidding me? 5 wide from the start with Ced? Fuck off.

Yes I do. The more receivers you spread out the easier it is to see what the defense is in. There is a reason the game has evolved past the fullback. We were very stubborn offensively back in those days. Very. See Vince 03-early 04. We scored 0 points with Ced Benson in the backfield vs OU. 0! Not sure if you've ever played QB but a lot of QBs are following the route with their eyes, so they throw to the spot the receiver will be in and there is a defender sitting on the route ahead. Same thing happened to Quinn last week. The easy solution is to throw routes to the outside where the read is cleaner and/or put more receivers out there and that forces box guys out and prevents them muddying the waters. You can keep Ced in and go 4 wide, and then send Ced out in the flat which pulls a backer with him. Either way, we were always slow to evolve on offense which is why we got our ass handed to us vs Stoops every year. Too easy an offense to diagnose. Regardless, this game was on the coaches. We had an advantage at receiver. A big one. Sometimes you have to take what is available. We needed to see how good their 3rd and 4th DBs were. Just a dumb gameplan from Texas there. After the last Simms turnover we go 5 wide and get a wide open BJ up the seam. Then what do we do after that? You guessed it, go right back to what wasn't working. Punt, FG, missed FG, FG. Then when the game is pretty much over on our last drive we go 5 wide again and score another TD. I get blaming Simms but you had an advantage and didn't use it. Then Ced goes out giving you all the excuse in the world to use that advantage and you still stubbornly didn't use it.

I saw almost all of the game. I’m not gonna put myself through that. lol

You SHOULD go back and watch it. How we remember it when we were emotional and how we will see it now is totally different. Watching it again it was a total team loss. Especially knowing what I know now. For example Roy Williams just didn't always play hard. A lot of loafing from him over the years. As good as he was he could've been so much better. The defense let us down as did the defensive gameplan. On offense we had the weapons to spread teams out but we trotted out a fullback quite a bit. Majors first TD was 5 wide, and we should've been in that look a lot from the outset. Maybe Simms would've been better not playing football in a phone booth. Too many FGs. We couldn't convert once we got inside the RZ. Major missed a couple throws and we fumbled one that we recovered too. The easy move is to just blame Simms, and while he deserves his share for sure, we sucked all the way around in this game.

None of that makes a shit. This is Texas vs OU. Jeff Blake beat James Brown and company who went on to win the Big 12 with Ricky Williams in the backfield. That team that had lost twice "prior to the Cotton" still won its division. The season wasn't fucking over.

And sure it is easy to play well vs OU when you aren't a loser who comes up small against OU.

Again, we were aggy with Applewhite starting, but we beat OU so. One thing I have learned about football is that 9 times out of 10 the guy NOT starting is exactly where he should be with all things being equal. Only time that seems to consistently not be true is when the guy not starting is a freshman or the like. Also, we all loved roll left but that was a 5 loss team. Oh and its John Blake.

  15. 4 hours ago, Valmy77 said:

You know what gets remembered? Championships and the OU game.

Neither QB ever won a championship...but both of them played OU. One was 2-0 and led a 17 point comeback. The other got outplayed by Nate Hybl.

So, you know, sucks to suck. So maybe don't shit your pants and fall over your jock everytime you see Crimson and Cream and cry everytime you hear Boomer Sooner maybe people might remember you fondly at Texas. Or, failing that, maybe win something.

As it is, even now 20 years later, every time we play OU Chris Simms being humiliated gets played over and over again. That's fun.

Easy to play well vs OU when you already lost 2 games, you've Ricky Williams in the backfield, and John Blake on the headsets across the field. Then you run it back vs a coach in their first season once again having no pressure on you because you'd already lost twice prior to the cotton. Lol

It’s fascinating to look at their career stats-they are nearly identical all across the board.

To me they were a lot like Thompson-Card except a higher tier. One could look better than the other in relief but as soon as you gave him the reigns the flaws would come out. Chris' problem was the lack of mobility and lack of touch at times. Major just couldn't get the ball where he needed to when it mattered but he was gritty. Neither one was going to win us 12 games.

I still don't get y'all with Applewhite. Everyone liked Major but the idea he would've gotten it done had Simms just gotten out of the way to me is mind boggling. Major struggled just as much as Simms did just in different ways.

I'm really confused why everyone thinks giving him a big raise is going full aggy/Jimbo.

Jimbo got a huge contract and his trajectory was:

    9 wins -> 8 wins -> 9 wins (COVID year) -> 8 wins -> 5 wins -> 6 wins before being fired

Sark started a low salary and his trajectory has been:

    5 wins -> 8 wins -> 12 wins + Big 12 title + CFP berth

He deserves a big fucking raise and all the contract incentive bonuses he should have in there for winning the conference and making the CFP.

This right here. Jimbo, much to the entertainment of Longhorns abound, fleeced aggy for 90 while still churning out the same 8-4 average they always have. One could argue Sark has vasty outperformed his contract when you look at the median. Man deserves to be paid. Give him a 4 yr but at the top of the market and reevaluate then. Most importantly, pay Get in The Mother Fucker, and all the other assistants who matter so we can keep the train going. Make sure the only way those guys get paid more elsewhere is for a HC job. High pay but keep it around 4 years. That way we can afford the buyout if anyone goes south.
