  1. [emoji849] Cloak Room is that way —>
  2. First time posting in this thread, but thought I'd join in the discussion. Over the last year or so, i have noticed that most of my pants are starting to get snug and some of them have dust collecting on them because I know that if I tired to put them on the would be too tight. I don't want to let myself buy new clothes because I'll just out grow them too do I decided to do something about it. For the last decade I have run 2x a week, but it obviously was no longer enough to keep me where I wanted to be. Back in January I started lifting weights 2x a week in addition to the runs and within a couple of months I saw some noticeable (read: positive) changes in my overall physique. However, after five months of that I still didn't lose any weight. In June, I decided to go with the no sugar/no flour diet for a month to see what would happen. I know that making dietary changes isn't easy for anyone, but this was f'ing brutal for me. I never realized how much of what I ate day-in and day-out fell into those two categories. Well, after a month I saw a 5% loss in total body weight. So I decided to let myself have very limited flour based products and stay no-sugar. I was basically flat for the rest of the summer weight-wise. Then I decided to implement intermittent fasting ~3 days a week. I would eat dinner then have nothing until dinner the next night. After just over a month on that I have lost another 5%. I'm fairly close to the number I want to see on the scale at this point, but I still have some visible mid-section fat I'd like to take care of. The question I have is, how do you fellas balance the last stage of the transformation? Do I keep dropping weight till all the fat is gone and thus end up pretty "skinny" before trying to build back up to my target weight with muscle mass? Or do I try to maintain my weight at the number I want and try to "transition" the fat weight to muscle weight? TIA
  3. I guess that’s what I’m asking, does anyone have experience with an immersive course that can speak to how much they actually learned/retained? It will be some time before IMC is within my personal minimums. I just believe that the IFR training will help make me a better VFR pilot and make it less intimidating should I happen upon IMC. Also, it’ll be nice to be able to go above FL18 for long x-countries. I have a flight computer I use for x-wing calculations for sure. It’s a little more difficult to multiply the relative wind speed by the sin of the angle between my heading and the angle of that relative wind all in my head.
  4. Also, what say the surly pilots about intensive IFR training courses? I was thinking about chipping away at the IFR training the same way I did my VFR, but I have a couple of friends who have done the intensive 10 day or 2 week courses and knocked it out. Has anyone here done an intensive course? Or do any of you have strong opinions about them one way or the other?
  5. I really wish I had known about the runway selector before my checkride. I would have absolutely loved to see the DPE's face when I whipped it out to decide which runway to use.
  6. Boom! Got the "satisfactory" on the checkride a couple of hours ago. Time to load up the cessna with hookers and blow and burn the motherfucker down!
  7. Seriously though, this is a great idea, I guess having someone come out and give me a bid isn't committing me to anything. And like you said, I can always just implement their ideas myself.
  8. The plan is to go into Austin Executive. That will keep me out of Charlie completely. All of my x-country solos so far have been into Charlie, so I'm not too intimidated even if I did go into KAUS. The real test will be when I fly in to Bravo to go see my parents in Addison. But the comment about the license to learn is well taken. That is very much how I'm treating it. I'm not thinking that getting my ticket punched suddenly makes me qualified to undertake any VFR flight I can imagine. I'm also planning to dive straight into the IFR training, but I'm hoping to buy a plane first so I can do my IFR in it while building insurance hours.
  9. Also, another thing complicating the issue are the skylights. So working around those with in ceiling speakers may be tough. I’m open to any additional ideas y’all may have.
  10. Thanks for the responses. What if I went for something like this on the atmos speakers? Then just mounted them directly to the ceiling facing down? The walls are all still bare studs so running cable to those locations shouldn't be an issue.
  11. Here is a bad MS Paint of the space
  12. Bump to discuss my project: I've got a bonus room/'man cave' (not really a fan of that term though), that I'm looking to finish out. the dimensions are kind of weird but the plan is to make a portion of it into a theater/critical listening space. So we built this garage down the side of our property and the dimensions were such that it would have ended up being a 4 car garage. I figured that's ridiculous so I put in 3 garage bays and walled off the fourth to create this room. that being the case it is very long an narrow (approx 26' x 12'). The far end will be the bathroom/bar area, the center section will have the couch facing a large TV with surround sound, and the front end has double doors that open to the back yard. I'll see if i can whip up a sketch on MS Paint. The center section where I'm hoping to put the A/V setup is approximately 12' x 12'. The challenges are that the ceilings are vaulted, the area between the seating area and the TV needs to function as a pass-through to the bar/bathroom, and the back wall to the bathroom makes of the left hand portion of the A/V space. My plans are to hang an 82+" TV on the wall then have 11.2 surround sound with dolby atmos. (L,C,R, Wide L, Wide R, Surr L, Surr R, Atmos Front L&R, Atmos Rear L&R). This might be absolutely overkill for the space, but I'm seeking the most immersive viewing experience I can get. Info I'm searching for: does anyone have atmos set up in their home, if so how do you like it? In such a small space, should I be looking at in wall speakers or should I deal with the crowding of on-wall/tower speakers. How big is big enough or too big on the TV if I expect to be sitting 10'-11' from the screen?
  13. Cramming for my PPL check ride has begun. I flew with the CFI yesterday and today and I'll get in a solo day tomorrow to do air work and try to nail the short/soft field TO/Ls. Then I go back with him on Thursday, to make sure my chops are up to snuff. I'll be cramming all weekend for the knowledge part and we'll do a couple of mock rides next week before hopefully getting checked out the following week (might shoot for 9/11 cuz fuck terrorists). Any pointers from the surly pilots out there? Gotcha questions you remember from your check rides? or other related stories? I'm really hoping to get my ticket punched because I have a plane reserved to fly in for the USC game that next weekend.
  14. Here in west texas, the names of the days of the week have been truncated and it drives me insane Sunday -> Sund-ee Monday -> Mond-ee Tuesday -> Tuesd-ee ... you get the point Also "pilla" as opposed to pillow
  15. Every time I've flown in a helicopter we took off and landed from the ramp avoiding the runways like the plague. We also fly opposite traffic patterns from the fixed wings in order to avoid exactly what happened in the video. Lastly, we've always yielded to to fixed wing traffic (it's a lot easier to go in reverse in a rotor than a fixed)
  16. Those things give me a bad case of the wants. Like LSGuido I've got the i20s and like them, but am itching to upgrade. I haven't hit them yet but I'll definitely hit the Miuras as well before I buy anything. Please give a full report/review once you are able
  17. I normally shout this when I hit the duck-slice/punch-face/hosel-rocket
  18. Nope, overhead power lines are just bare aluminum & steel wire, the fire shouldn't bother that at all
  19. Got to play Escondido for father's day. It was my third time to play it and I continue to be impressed. It's a great mix of long and short holes. and I found myself using most of my bag throughout the round, which I always enjoy. Spent the 2nd half of the day in the lake to make up a nice little Sunday.
  20. Call the proshop tomorrow morning. They hold a bunch of tee times for locals and the unclaimed ones get released to the general public three days out. So if you call tomorrow morning they should have something for you and you can skip the 5am show up. I play Torrey every year this way and it hasn't failed me yet.
  21. Regular Season games: DKR Cotton Bowl Floyd Casey (Old Baylor) McLane (New Baylor) Jones (Tech) Kyle Field OK State Tulane (Superdome) UCLA (Rose Bowl Stadium) Bowl Games / Big 12 Champ games: Old Cowboys stadium Jerry World Alamo Dome Cotton Bowl Not Texas Playing: Bryan Denny (Iron Bowl) Rose Bowl (UCLA/Cal regular season game) SMU at home
  22. Did you get a Caddy? Same one for both days? Are you walking? I highly recommend a caddy and can pass a long the names of a couple of good ones if you want. Both times I've played those courses I am amazed at the condition they are in for as much traffic as they see. Let us know how it goes and don't forget to take your "Arnie" pic sitting on the little fence by the 18 tee box.
  23. All rounds are gross, but we were flighted by total team handicap, in a effort to keep it competitive. The problem is that we have been bested by what is apparently an egregious sandbagging effort. The winner of our flight would have handily won the flight above us as well, and this is their 4th year in a row to win their flight in such a manner. There are numerous reasons why it is apparent that either blatant cheating or sandbagging is happening here, and I know this happens in every tournament there is, but it's demoralizing to know that we were playing for 2nd. It turned out not to matter since we (I) didn't play to my potential on the Saturday round and put us out of contention , but alas, good times were had by all, and my liver will never be the same.
