  1. Opted for a central hotel in Frisco for night #1 just because there are some restaurants and pubs nearby and, like you said, its only about 6-8 minutes further from A-Basin so its negligible.  Yeah, deals aplenty in Keystone but, man, talk about being alone.  I'll have a car to take me back and forth.  Is the parking lot in mid-May reasonable at A-Basin?

  2. Keystone will be closed by the time I get to CO which is fine because of the 4 resorts in Summit County, Keystone has a lock on #4.  So, yeah, I guess Dillon is probably best.  The town of Keystone looks like it will be completely dead (why would you need to be there if the resort is closed) but granted I'll be there one night so I don't know how much it matters.  Then I'll move on to Winter Park or whatever is closer that way that makes sense.  I don't remember the town of Winter Park being particularly thrilling but its more about convenience.  Family is not with my and the focus is skiing so I'm open to whatever.

  3. So, definitely going and will meet a buddy of mine to ski on one of the days.  Need some advice.  My plan is this:

Fly in on a Thursday around mid-day and drive into the mountains

    Day one - Ski A-Basin

Day two - Ski Mary Jane

I want to be closer to A-Basin on the first night.  Closest lodging is in Keystone but I imagine it will be dead.  Should I stay in Dillon/Silverthorne or go further to Frisco?   Frisco looks like it has a proper town.  Dillon and Silverthorne always seemed like drive-through country to me.  Keystone... closest but milquetoast in May?

After skiing A-Basin, I'll probably stay in Winter Park for the night so I can ski Winter Park on day two, pack up my crap and fly back to Denver to take a red eye home.  I was tempted to do something like Georgetown and would even ski Loveland if it was open on day one (solely because I've never skied there and have been curious every time I drove past it).

    Thoughts?

  4. About 90% certain I'll be heading to A-Basin and Mary Jane in May to get some last turns in.  Mary Jane is staying open through May 12th and A-Basin always makes it into June.

  5. There's no doubt that boots are important but, as much as I hate to say it, I've managed with rental boots all my life and advanced in my skiing along the way.  In a way, I agree with you and why I just bought my first pair of boots ever but I just can't get myself to part for $700 as an add-on to the boots.  Maybe if I hit 200% of my quota this year.

  6. $700 I'm going out and buying a new pair of skis... I get more excitement from the skis than the boots.  Boots are a necessary evil... skis give boners.  Maybe my feet aren't that bad so I don't see the need.  That said, I would love it if I could duct tape my Sorels to my skis so, for now, I'll go with these Atomics which feel pretty darn good.

Depends. The full custom boot liner where they inject the material into the liner is about $700 plus the cost of the boot shell.  You’re looking at 1,100-1,500 drowning on how much you want to spend on the boot.  That said, damn it’s worth it. Best money I’ve spent on skiing by far.

  8. The irony in some of the responses.

How much you bring back each trip varies from state to state.  While the State Dept has rules in place, TABC says you can bring up to 3 gallons of wine back per person.  That's 11 liters of wine.  TSA does not have the right to take that wine.  When they ask, just tell them... "we have 8 bottles of wine" or whatever.  I've never had a problem.   Each winery is different... many small ones will tell you that they don't bother importing their wine to the US because of the quantities they have to produce, the different labels they have to produce, etc.  In some cases, they may have an importer that services an area like New York or Chicago but are screwed when it comes to Texas.

Also super rare for me to want to get 6 wines from one winery... more likely to want 2 from here, 2 from here, etc. or to even go to a regional enoteca like the one in Emilia Romagna and come back with a big mix of wines.

I am wondering what bug crawled up your ass that you are making a big deal of it and seem to be the TABC's personal cheerleader. Just let it go.

And FYI, TABC sucks utterly and completely.  It is in the pocket of the distributors and the wholesalers with its draconian laws and really works against the producers and the consumers.  It needs to be abolished.

Uh... what?  I'm not sure what prompted your rant since I was just commenting about shipping and included a quote.  I'm glad you can infer that I love TABC from my post or that I support the system as it is set up in Texas.  Quite impressive at reading between the lines.  Second, you went to Taylor Fladgate (also owns Croft, Fonseca)... a large port house that has relationships with large importers.  I believe that's how they get around it.  We often go to smaller wineries that have smaller productions and, guess what, they can't ship to Texas.  I also don't want to pay for inflated costs and excess shipping fees.  So, yeah, I pack my wine in dirty underwear and I posted the TABCs information because, like it or not, they enforce the laws of shipping to this state, even if they suck.

I have done 4 pairs of boots in Houston.  I have done 2 with JP at sun and ski, and 2 others with different people.

Was thinking about this.  4 pairs.  Is this Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, fool me three times, won't get fooled again, fool me four times, f'f'f'fooolin' ?

Nobody.  I have done 4 pairs of boots in Houston.  I have done 2 with JP at sun and ski, and 2 others with different people.  I haven't felt like any of them were really all that great.  I did the surefoot thing a few weeks back in deer valley, and that is 100% worth the extra money to do that whole custom fit process.  I will never do boots any other way again.  ever.  The variance in comfort between the shit liners that come in off the shelf boots and the surefoot liner/process is as vast as the mind can comprehend.

Welp, that was a little late.  I had Bob fit me and I was happy with the process... the boots I picked get great reviews.  If anything, I can always get the surefoot liner process at a later date.  Meanwhile, JP is mounting my bindings.

Mammoth, Timberline, Squaw, all on the radar.  Shoot, I'm fine with Snowqualmie... whatever.  Just want to ski.

  12. Well, with a purchase they mounted the bindings for $25 instead of $75.  Also, since I bought boots, the custom fitting, molding of the liner/footbed was all in... and I got an extra 10% off so I'm happy.  Now I need to find a way to get a long weekend to Tahoe or Mammoth or somet other place.

Shipped?  How is that going to work out?

I bring back 6-8 bottles when we return from Italy... dirty laundry has its uses.

Have you never shipped wine? They do it for a lot of American clients.

No... are you in Texas because usually there are all kinds of issues.  I also bring back a big variety of wine and not just from one vineyard.

Opportunity to make a deal.  "Hey, if I get these boots, mount my bindings?"

I'll definitely see what I can swing.

Then I'll have to find a way to finagle a  late season ski weekend

  15. Nah man, I'm not going to practice how to mount bindings on my new skis.  After I buy the boots, I'm letting someone else do that for me.  I have zero experience so its money well spent to have someone take care of it.

  16. Welp, I wasn't too far from the store so I swung by but JP wasn't working today.  Will call next time before I go in.  Looking at the selection of boots they had on hand (we'll see about sizing), they seemed to have about 25 different boots but on display on the wall doesn't mean anything.   I'll try again and see what's up.

To get them mounted now just go see JP and tell him what you want and that you don't have a boot yet.  The best answer is to just use any boot if you know your shell size.

I don't know if SnS has winter stuff still on the shelves.  Didn't you get some Orbs?  Don't under power those skis with an intermediate boot.  I would get boots at a mountain shop, or a city that skis a lot and has shops with gear on the shelves year round.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.  I don't know my shell size, though.  Maybe I can contact the place in Saas Fee and see if they can tell me what I had last time.  Tried two different boots... the second pair was a narrow boot and my feet were much happier.  Don't worry... I'm going to spend on some good boots.  That's more important than the skis.
