  1. I have zero interest in regular cruises... zero... but European river cruises intrigue me since you're always close to scenery, getting on/off easy and the food is apparently excellent.  That said, yes, I'm not feeling like I'm in the correct age bracket yet.  Maybe sooner or later but not there, yet.

Rudder et al. referred to themselves as the egalitarian alternative to the elitists at "the school in the state capital"; he actually said during committee hearings at the state legislature that Texas A&M is "the poor boys' school, where anyone can afford to get a good college education." Perry's attempts to turn it into a diploma mill were highly influenced by that history, actually, but there was a lot of pushback from those who wanted to think of their school as being high quality, not as blue collar. First time I ever heard of that quote, actually, was back in the late 70s when my brother went to aggy for a meteorology degree (they were one of only three schools south of the Mason Dixon line who offered it at the time, is the only reason he went), and the consensus "other 98" view was that he had never actually said it. The clip from the Bryan Eagle says otherwise.

Someone who lives there needs to go take a picture of the quote... maybe over the entire article and the specific quote then go post it on a mix of boards so that the quote is out there and can no longer be disputed.  Just sayin'...

  3. Well then I have good news for you... look in this picture below... same scene, different angle.  Board that dinky cable car up top.  It provides access to pure freeriding/unmarked skiing.  No patrol, just go where you want.  See here:

Love the trees. The powder stashes you find, and the solitude can't be matched in a bowl.  That and you can pull up next to a tree and blow a bowl or take a leak.

No doubt... nowhere to take a leak in a bowl.  That said, I feel a certain sense of solitude in a bowl.  This gives me a bigger snow boner than going into the trees... (aside from the avalanche danger)

  5. Tepito... uh, yeah, decidedly not very kid-friendly.  Did you stay in Scampia in Naples?  The centro has some great areas but you get into rough areas very quickly.  Went to a jazz club late at night in the centro... was fine by the club but you didn't want to venture far from the main streets.  You need to really see Mexico City.  You've just scratched the surface.

That's all fair.  But to me it feels a bit like Cairo or Istanbul,  not like Berlin, Paris or London (well maybe some of East London).  Kind of need to have your guard up and know you're on your own.

Now that my kids are teenagers it's back on the list.

Where do you stay?  Yes, you have to be aware but man, its not freakin' Cairo.  We would walk around at night in Condesa, feel safe walking in reasonable neighborhoods, took Ubers everywhere.  I got taken on more "rides" in Brussels or Athens than I ever did in Mexico City.

Huh.  I’ve always thought it was even less kid-friendly than most big cities.

Taken our kids 3 times in the past 2 years... Lucha Libre, Chapultupec, the museums, Coyoacan/San Angel, Xochimilco... all great... and the people are super nice to them and you can take them to most fancy restaurants without an issue.

  8. I get the feeling though that what will keep Isla Holbox slow to develop is that there is nothing out there... you have to either take a puddle jumper from CUN or catch a ferry from a sleepy town nearby.  Isla is right across from a city of 1M.  Also, Holbox is a barrier island (easily wiped out by a hurricane) whereas Isla is a rocky island that isn't' going to erode away.  Holbox seems like a risky play for big development.

  9. This year in Austria - https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/alps-avalanche-latest-dead-killed-austria-germany-salzburg-bavaria-snow-weather-a8716626.html

Reminds me of last year in France - https://www.thelocal.fr/20180122/french-alps-100-chamonix-chalets-evacuated-due-to-extreme-snow  (the chalets mentioned in the article were further down the road in that first picture I posted above.  My picture was in March.  January was far worse)

  10. Yeah, you know... I will chase after (relatively reasonable) steeps, moguls, go into bowls, etc but I've never been interested in the trees.  I think that's why Europe appeals to me so much... wiiiide open spaces.  I love it.  Trees, glades?  Nope.  Never been for me.  Really curious to see how this next trip will go without my ACL but I feel ready to go.  Chomping at the bit.

  11. Looks like Austria is getting the same "too much snow" treatment that Chamonix/Zermatt/Saas Fee got last year.  Too much of a good thing and now villages are starting to get evacuated.  Crazy.  There were some days during our trip last year when the snow wouldn't quit... you'd get gobs in the valley and then whiteout conditions higher up.  This was the road to Le Tour coming from Argentiere.  The next pic is the top station on Les Grands Montets - howling winds and tough conditions on top.  Would have been properly screwed without a guide who could take me to a spot sheltered by cliffs and acres upon acres of untracked powder.
