Truth. I know it may be unpopular, but I almost prefer spring corn to winter skiing (pow days excluded). Sun. Sleep in (let that sun get on it). Warmer temps. Soft bumps. Gravity still works. I’m in.
That was the terrain off the T-Bars at Crested Butte last spring. Once the sun softened it up, it was glorious.

Also funny because so many White people in Texas can't shut the fuck up about their ancestral roots in Europe. "I am 9th cousins with such-and-such Duke/Barron/Earl from England/Germany/Scotland/Sweden/etc." But when pressed, "European? Nah man, that ain't me, them's socialist queers..."
Will blow me away until the day I die, how the thing people had the least to do with, is their biggest badge of honor.
"5th Generation Texan from Germany. dammit!"
If you've been here that long and you haven't started a foundation to help other Texans, you're doing life wrong.
...and what's particularly funny about all the Italian-Americans in places like Jersey who's grandparents or great grandparents or great great whatever came from Italy... when they say they are Italian, Italians say "so, American".

A few years back there were a slew of telenovelas with side-characters who were from Italy. If they include you in telenovelas, you're family.
I mean, it's only in the US where we decided that people from where they invented Latin are not Latino. I blame all those OCD wretches in HR.
My Aunt/Uncle/Cousins lived for years in CDMX... anyway, after college my cousin and I lived together and we would often watch Mexican TV including some shows were Mexicans would play caricatures of Italians. We would laugh our asses off because it was Mexicans speaking a kind of Spanish Italian / Spitalian and it was hilarious. I've always had an affinity for Mexico, particularly CDMX and the whole vibe there.
BTW, the last time we were in Greece, we were commenting that Greece felt more like the Mexico of Europe. BUT, honestly, while in Sicily on a beach vacation, we once said, "this is the Mexico of Italy". So there you go.

That’s probably Campbells and Cow’s Face in the background. They are fun.
It’s a great bag and I’ve done the same periodically when I want a sense of humility as my sea-level lungs watch kids blaze by me trucking up the track. Bag gets more use carrying my water bladder, sandwich, two beers, and an extra layer tho 😎
First four days on my new Nordica Unleashed 98s. Digging that ski.
Same... usually water, some GoPro accessories and crap my kids don't want to carry but used it to take the boot pack up Willy's Wide at A-Basin.
Rocking Black Crows Orbs skis. Putting em back to use next week!

I like Mexicans. I guess because I'm born from one. But yeah, if there's a plan to get rid of Italians.....I'm all in.
Wait, weren't we talking about spring break in Reynosa or some shit?
Funny though how when I speak Spanish to Latin Americans they're always trying to figure out my accent and then we get along because I'm from Italy

Driven through there quite a bit on the way to Colorado where my sister lives. I imagine a few work at the local restaurant or gas station. Maybe a few up on Capuline - there's a little museum and gift shop on top of the extinct volcano. Very cool view from up there. I'm guessing the rest are on social security or something.
That is one of the most godawful stretches of road I've ever seen... made me realize to NEVER take the Amarillo way to CB. Always go through Lubbock. Yeah... that right there is saying something. I'll take that stretch north of Fort Sumner any day over the Des Moines, NM stretch of road... although admittedly would be curious to see the extinct volcano. Or not.

Yup... systematically is key. Racists are everywhere and this country codified it into law on the local, state and Federal level many many times. Italians can be pretty racist but I don't know that you would walk anywhere in Italy and see signs for "Italians Only" and "Moroccans/Libyans/Africans only" on an entrance, separate bathrooms, etc... and I'm not talking an isolated incident but everywhere. Yeah, we can talk about the Fascist years but Jim Crow was pretty much ingrained in the culture of the south (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jim_Crow_law_examples_by_state)
So, uh, again, don't go to Blanca White's in Matamoros

re: the question on top "pop" bands... I suppose you can call them pop but I'd say one of the best ever was INXS. They produced one great song after another with an exceptionally charismatic front man who unfortunately could not hang in there long term.
Someone mentioned Van Halen and not liking them. I loved DLR Van Halen but will live a nice comfortable life if I never hear Van Hagar again. That said, this was an exceptional pre VH album:

Mexicans are capable of discrimination . Yes, it’s true. But show me their litany of recent legislation where they seek to actively punish people just for being themselves.
and then yea, we can discuss the cartels.
Vietnamese friend was telling me in Vietnam there's plenty of racism among the Vietnamese based on skin darkness, as well... but, man, we are on a tangent.
In the end, I think there are plenty of areas in Mexico that can be safe and enjoyable. Matamoros has not been one of those areas in decades. Anyone who does not need to be there does not need to be there. Anyone who is not Mexican that does not need to be there definitely does not need to be there. This is appears to be a classic case of uninformed FAFO, unfortunately.

I'm surprised Elon hasn't started pitching something like Cybertruck NFTs to his legion of rubes.
Not to say there aren't other people trying...

But even to the casual observer, the last several are starting to fit an even more narrow pattern of coincidence. Or as we said, once you get a fully built-out party district near a body of water with no lights around it and plenty of drugs and booze...maybe just more and more shit happens. Walk off Rainey street to the west from Van Zandt to the MACC. Or at the southern tip past those multi-family towers. Yeah, there's some dim lights, but you can easily wander into some points of entry to the lake and stumble into it unconscious, conscious with struggling to swim, or just plain fucked up on drugs/booze. If you don't recognize the gravel of some of the paths under your feet like an outfield warning track, it's pretty fucking dark, and you can find yourself falling in rather easily. I don't recommend this, but go walk it at dusk or dawn and notice how poorly lit it is between rainey street CRE and the water. Again, I think that's how it's happening but I'm not McNulty from BPD. I just think that's more plausible from that busy party area than somebody killing them and dumping them on one of the busiest streets in Austin where there's a 100 building cams pointed down there. And the creepy thing is most of the bodies show no sign struggle/blunt force trauma/stabbings/etc. I bet toxicology would reveal something, but we gotta 10 year backlog on rape kits so I'm sure "Drunken Minnesota man parties too hard" kit isn't a big priority for the guys working in shifts. Somebody real fucking powerful's son may be the next to die and bring this whole thing crashing down and right quick.
Y'all... for real... think about where all of these incidents are happening. Everyone keeps looking around looking around... what could it be? There's only one obvious answer and its not on the ground level...

B) Any family member that seriously complains about YOUR child’s name is to be ignored. Mom/Dad, it ain’t your choice, so keep your goddamned mouths shut.
Mine have Italian names so its never been an issue with my parents.
Luigi and Mario, of course.

Went to Matamoros my freshman year in college... since we were all underage, my buddy decided he wanted to buy a bottle of cheap Oso Negro Vodka to bring back to Padre... so, he buys a Mexican blanket, rolls up the bottle in the blanket and puts the blanket around his neck... kind of like a scarf or a trashy beach python... and just strolls back across the border in the US without a second look. Those were the days...

So we have various Latin American countries representing. Looks like a couple of Brits/commonwealth folks. What else?
Italy (duh)
When we came here, my mom really complalined about the lack of good pasta, olive oil, etc. We would either visit Italy or have relatives visit us from Italy with big old jugs of olive oil. My mom felt like it was a wasteland from a cooking perspective. Not to mention some people would hear us talk and just assume we were Mexican.

Ski Season 2022 / 2023
in Hobbies
Will post pics soon from our ski trip... booked it 2019, cancelled it in the spring of 2020, tried rebooking it a couple of times and finally took it.
We stayed in Montgenevre, France but also skied into Claviere in Italy. Did primarily Montgenevre and Claviere for four days. Then hit up Sestriere, Sansicario and Sauze d'Oulx in Italy for a day and spent one last day in Serre Chevalier.
Day one was snowy but I had a guide and we went freeriding and it was phenomenal. Lots of fresh tracks. Next three days conditions were variable but they improved as the week went on and I knew how to read the mountain/snow conditions more effectively.
On day four, I tweaked my MCL (short stupid story) and I thought I would be screwed for days 5 and 6. Was super pissed off since was going to ski Sestriere with a friend from a town near Torino BUT I woke up on day 5 with the knee feeling great. Did not have to cancel it. Charged it hard in the morning until we met up with their friend who is an instructor and alpine guide in Sestriere and then we charged it even harder. An enjoyable ass kicking, TBH. Of couse, the day was spent skiing hard but also eating/drinking Italian style on the slopes.
Day 6 was at Serre Chevalier... it was part of a our ski pass for a day and was worth it. Barely scratched the surface of the resort. Massive resort with great breadth of runs, lots of restaurants and light crowd. Massive massive place for freeriding. Really want to go back. Definitely on my list for a longer visit.
Now, since its not spring break in Europe, most lift lines were sub one minute... longest one probably five minutes. Most runs were pretty open but harder runs were barren wastelands. Weather was relatively warm in the daytime so you just had to follow the conditions. Sestriere probably held up the best and charging the Olympic and World Cup runs was awesome. Six da ski pass worked out to about 40ish dollars a day and that included two days in the Via Lattea and one day in one of the following: Serre Chevalier, Les 2 Alpes, Alp de Huez, Puy St. Vincent or Bardonecchia.
My biggest regret...
My guide for the first day asked me if I wanted to go to La Grave which is one of those "once in a lifetime" ski destinations. I told him I just needed to check our schedule but was definitely interested. Private guide on La Grave would have been 370 Euro including transportation from Montgenevre. BUT... when I tweaked my MCL, I opted not to do it. Kind of pissed. The place is legendary. If I can get back to Serre Chevalier for a longer stay, I'm going to go all in on La Grave and maybe combine it with a separate day at Les 2 Alpes.
Anyway, pics to come. Meanwhile, here is the massive French resort you've never heard of that you need to visit:
