  1. hmmm. that seems like right now folks in Iowa may be craving an old, familiar, comforting type. i can understand why. but there is a lot of time for others to become better known. Beto is ahead of a lot of tenured senators. that's impressive.

  2. literally EVERYBODY in Deadwood, including every single minor character*

obviously McShane and Olyphant, but standouts include Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, W. Earl Brown, Molly Parker,  Jim Beaver, John Hawkes, Dayton Callie, Titus Welliver, Powers Boothe, Garret Dillahunt, Keith Carradine, Gerald McRaney, Michael Harney, and good lord William Sanderson was brilliant. even pervert Jeffrey Jones was perfect.

gotdamn that show was the BEST.

(*did not read whole thread, not surprised if already mentioned)

  3. just finished. tears galore. gah.

i never saw the KK/BS version... for some reason i kept thinking she was going to die, a breakdown or something. realized i had confused the story with The Rose, maybe i saw that as a kid and got them conflated in my mind.

anyway... many Oscar nods will be had, including Elliot. damn good movie. *sniff*

  4. was there over Thanksgiving. our 7th trip...

oysters - Felix's...or Mr. Ed's (on Bienville), they have charbroiled jalapeno oysters, so goooood

sazerac - French 75 (bar attached to Arnaud's)

brunch - COMMANDER'S PALACE...5 star service with a side of snark, brunch is reasonable...and 25 cent martinis. for $.75 you can be nicely toasted by 1pm 😁 reservation recommended. we do this every trip, it's a blast!

  5. FWIW chatted with my French exchange student friend in Paris this morning (she's stayed with us the past two years while working at UT Jackson School)... she said it's crazy but she's mostly just worried about getting to the airport tomorrow bc they are blocking the streets...but she said it looks much worse on tv than it really is. she was more interested in telling me about her finished project she's presenting in Washington DC this week.

she was staying here during one of the terrorist attacks in Paris... the European mindset on these things is kind of fascinating. i won't say they are nonchalant, but they definitely take these things in stride much more than Americans, kind of like 'well, that happened' and moving on.

is it just bc it's more common? are they more 'connected' to parts of the world where these things happen with some frequency? it's interesting.

It's weird thinking Trump can listen to people praise GHWB about being a president the right way and then just go back to being a piece of shit.  None of this is can penetrate him.

i can't help it. looking at these men, from Carter to Obama, it's fucking shameful this human stain is even in the same group as them ☹

  7. this was the best series I've ever read. incredible story-telling, compelling characters. the story was so consistent in details from beginning to end, even with six years in between the first and the last book. so much so i went back and reread The Passage after i finished The City of Mirrors just to recall some details...Cronin was absolutely on the money.

i'm excited to see it onscreen, but i honestly can't imagine how it will translate. the story was so vast and covered hundreds of years, and you got emotionally attached to so many of the characters...it will be a challenge to convey all that to the screen.

i thought a trilogy of movies might be the way to go, but a lengthy tv series (if it"s done well) might actually work better.

anyway...really hope fox didn't fuck it up!

    anybody else in?
