  1. Damn, I was out of town this weekend and didn't even notice this was his weekend to get inducted. What a huge moment for him, the Spurs, and San Antonio.

My favorite memory of him might be the new, old Manu when he had a resurgence in time for the last championship. IIRC he kinda struggled with injuries early in the 2010s a bit, then came back after and took on more of a "crafty" YMCA guy since he lacked a lot of the athleticism he had a decade prior. That might have been my favorite version. Even though old-school Dunking Manu was a good one.

I really think the answer is both PK and GP have led to defensive improvements. However, GP is more of a special assistant to the head coach versus just a defensive mind. GP helps on both sides of the ball both in practice and in game planning. We're lucky to have him for this year, and we should give our support to PK until proven otherwise. GP is gone after this year, regardless (Nebraska?).

I have been in wait and see mode, but I think we're on the cusp of both Sark and PK haters eating a bit of crow.

I've been thinking for months about someone's post a while back showing how PKs defenses get significantly more productive in year two. Post-install. Maybe he had Gary showing him how to coach for all his previous stops too though. /s

Give the guy some credit. Also be glad GP is on the sidelines. What a lucky bounce our way with that

Crabface guy looked like a feeble serial killer. More mind than brawn, so no issues with him being easily dispatched...in half, as it were. That said he had a cool mask and it seemed to be made of shell which was a cool serial killer way of him to embrace his crabbiness, beyond his preferred method of torture. Between Daemon's jousting helmet and crabface mask, the head accouterments are 10/10.

The problem is Daemon is lame. He's not strong or cool. He's weird looking and apparently has the endurance of an iron man participant. To have Daemon finally do something after 3 years because his soft big brother is threatening to help him is lame and make Daemon look even more pouty and emotional like the weird looking, arrested development, 45 year old but wants to be 30 year old that he is.

What is fun, though, is the Ser Cristan and Rhanny vibes. Not in love with building Ser Cristn up as the noble savage, a low-born man but with extraordinary abilities and qualities unseen among other men, but I'll allow it.

Wouldn't be a Surly member if I didn't gripe, so here it is.

Daemon has graduated from not being able to beat Sir Cristan in a fair joust in episode one, to a fucking ninja assassin by episode 3. We're not supposed to respect him, or we are? Speaking of respect, he flushes out the crabs by "surrendering" so they obvs 1. send out 4 at a time to get slaughtered one by one. Until a dozen men are dead. And then 2. Send out 50 men to form a respectful 15-foot perimeter around Daemon, to just..... stare at him. Until reinforcements are able to arrive.

And 3. the King Crab was all worried about a dragon, but for the millionth time in a GoT episode, that flying 3-ton beast is able to sneak up on his army when he's not looking like a ..... well, a 6-oz crab.

    Anyways, see y'all on Sunday.

Can also add humans to the list. And I think Peele's focus was on Hollywood and tabloid culture. Hence the TMZ reporter, the SNL sketch, Jupe's memorabilia room, the Haywood family business, etc.

Yeah I saw Jupe as just as much of a character study as the monkey. And his perceived relationship with the monkey was a metaphor for how he viewed his relation to the "ufo" as well.

  5. Just caught the new episode. Shoutout to Amber MidThunder. Cool to see her as a typical Liberal Arts major/student leader after playing such a badass in Prey. That little conference reminded me of a few diversity retreats/seminars I went to in undergrad. The painful icebreakers and activities, the weird/inconsistent messaging, and overall the feeling of "why the hell are we here? We can only change so much, the people that need to hear this aren't here."

That old undertone of grief was back too, and pretty strong. Bear and Elora are going through it, bad, and they don't seem to have anywhere to turn.

  6. I'm in my mid-30s, but have had high cholesterol since my teens. I'm a big dude though, like my dad is, so I think it's partly genetics and me just being big. Got my yearly checkup and Doc put me back on Rosuvastatin last week. I stopped taking it for a while, but it did bring down my levels considerably the last time I took it. Guess it's going to be a lifetime thing. I'm fine with it. I think I've accepted that I'm just always going to be dealing with the territory of being 6'3 250+. I lift 4-5x a week and jog 2-3x a week, but it doesn't undo my genetics and also my diet (I enjoy the weekend drinks and food).

The doc did suggest a fish oil with the statin. Which I do have, but haven't looked into the difference between that and CoQ10. I thought they were similar.

  7. Interesting that Hutson beat out Campbell at guard. If Campbell is as advertised, Hutson is certainly a steal. Will be more interesting to see what this means about those 3 (including Conner) at guard going forward. Or if one can play Tackle.

Definitely saw his name plenty in the offseason posts, just usually don't put too much stock in 9.95 posts until it's really go time.

oh shit, i just put it together that the actress that plays daemon's chick is sonoya mizuno...who was the other android besides alicia vikander in ex machina.  hmm.

I thought it was Kelsey Asbille/Chow at first, of Yellowstone, Wind River, Fargo (who I thought was native, she's not)...... I think Mizuno edges her out though. She's smoke.

  9. I liked it, it had a good run there of the last few episodes being really gripping. Then there's some wtf moments, like Bun B as a priest, and the whole ending of Mo deporting himself. But overall it's a cool vibe, like that he showcases lots of the city, and lots of different people in the cast. Feels like the Houston I grew up in.

  10. Made an impromptu Saturday night trip to 7 Grand this weekend and splurged on a pour of Widow Jane 10-year..... Had to look it up this morning after bc the bartender suggested it, and it was top-shelf, but my immediate thought was that it's smooth but I couldn't taste shit but a fuckton of wood/barrel. It's very well rated online, so maybe I'm not a man of culture and taste like I thought. Should've stuck to Weller 12 or maybe Eagle Rare for the pour. Also had a cigar going, so maybe that killed any lighter flavors that might've come through.

It’s not being marketed as horror and news articles aren’t touting him as an all time horror director? I guess it’s fine if it’s a thriller but the impression going into this wknd is the public is getting a horror movie.

I think my expectations changed a lot after watching the final trailer (posted upthread). Watch that again and tell me it's sending you more than like 50% "horror" vibes. Compare that trailer to say... "A Quiet Place" or an "Insidious" movie, or hell, there's another Halloween movie that was in the trailers before Nope yesterday. If Horror is on a spectrum, this movie wasn't exactly marketed as straight horror.

  12. Pereira and Coroso looked like exactly what we needed tonight. The difference between feeling the press and inviting it to make a quick move away from it, and the decision to try to slow down the press by holding the ball and trying to out-muscle them (Felipe/Ring). Felipe was such a bad choice for this matchup. And Tarbell..... man....

  13. It's not horror, maybe a bit of a thriller. There's definitely a lot of suspense and drama, and it's an allegory. I liked it, thoroughly. Loved the sets, it has a western vibe, the acting is great, the pacing was good (I was into it from minute 1 and never really let up throughout the "wtf is going on" moments). I don't need my stories to be super linear, so if you prefer movies/stories like that, this won't be for you. Solid B+, mayyybe pushing an A- in my book, I had fun watching it. I do enjoy watching Daniel Kaluuya and Steven Yeun on screen though.

  14. Is Colby still in recovery or is he shopping a fight? He's another guy I feel like UFC gives a pass. His last 5 wins, dating back 5 years, are a bunch of guys from the old guard, Maia, Dos Anjos, Lawler, Masvidal, Woodley. It's a whole new world in the Top 10 and yet some dudes kinda wiggle their way through the traffic.

  15. Hate that they're feeding him to Khamzat. He didn't even want it.

After Khamzat vs Burns I'll at least be a bit excited about Khamzat being willing to stand and trade. He seemed to make a point about that against Gilbert, but I don't think Nate can handle that kinda ruggedness. Obvs if it gets to the ground Nate will get bullied.

  16. Not surprised that people, in this very thread, have walked out of this movie.... but not everyone likes to feel uncomfortable for a bit before figuring out what's going on.

Went to see it a 2nd time before it leaves theaters, and it definitely still felt like it will be right up there during Oscar season, and every bit deserved. As far as best movies of the year goes, not sure how I'd vote if I had to between this and Top Gun.
