  1. I thought I read somewhere that the plan for Threads was to make it work with Mastadon, whatever that means. I recall looking into Mastadon and the sign up method was kinda confusing.

As with email, where we can all be on different providers and still communicate together, Threads integrating into the fediverse (where Mastadon already is) would allow them to work together. I could post on Mastadon and you could follow my Mastadon account on Threads and see that post.

It’s the way this should have worked all along, but is not intuitive enough for general consumers at low scale. With someone like Meta pushing it forward it will finally be more easily embraced

  2. There's a reason why race is a question on credit applications. It's so the government can penalize Wells Fargo when the data shows they are disproportionally denying non-whites. (plus, you don't have to answer the question if you don't want to)

Same on job and rental apps

  3. I feel bad for the Mastadon people-- they had the right idea at the right time, just the wrong product.

If Threads connects to the fediverse it could actually help Mastadon. Being untethered to a specific provider is the way. It’s highly ironic that it takes Meta to help it scale into viability

  4. It's been a while, but last I checked it was a pain in the ass to export such lists from twitter.  I think you could get your personal data (what you posted), but I'm not sure about the follower lists.

Yep, and they fear META investing in solving that problem via scraping. The demand for it is at an all time high, for sure

  5. I don't think it's arrogant - I think he doesn't really know how much bigger Meta is than Twitter. The suggestion that Meta would "scrape" Twitter for users is beyond absurd and something they would only do for a laugh considering their user base is 10 times what Twitter's is.
    That entire letter is ridiculous.

My guess is they’re preempting attempts by meta to enable importing follow lists. Software companies always look for “stickiness” to make transitioning to competitors difficult, and this is theirs

  6. Sounds like an aggressive but reasonable goal. I was in a very similar place (47, 260#) and calorie counting on LoseIt has worked very well for me. Personally I’ve not seen any added value in fasting for me. Sticking to my calorie budget is already sufficiently challenging that I’d be concerned about burning out by adding additional barriers.

  7. I wonder if there is going be a court case and/or payoff over the name choice as it appears that there is a company already offering a communications product (slack alternative)  named threads.

I read somewhere Meta or Insta previously had an app called Threads that they killed. Probably still had naming rights secured from that project
  8. Ok and for me, Facebook and Instagram accounts are both my actual self . It seems if I want a threads account not associated with my actual identity where I can engage in internet cretin-ry I’ll need to create an additional Instagram account.

Yep see my comment above. They can be quietly connected
