I just looked at some satellite shots of that stadium. We played down there in September 1997 and if I remember correctly the stadium had two open ends. That’s a lot of construction. A friend of mine, our SID at the time, almost got killed by a TV that fell out of the broadcasting booth. It fell and landed about three feet behind him as he walked the bleachers. It was crazy.
I remember we actually beat them that day. It was a day game and wicked hot, for us from Pittsburgh, and our locker room looked like. A triage unit with guys getting IVs. Anyway, I always took my camera with me and as we were leaving the press box I said to a buddy, “should I take my camera?.
I didn’t.
Well, the Cougars were driving left to right for what would have been a game-winning score. We were standing at the other end zone, by the Pitt locker room. Houston threw a pass and Chiffon Allen intercepted it at the 3 and returned it 97 yards for a TD. My buddy Steve and I were the only guys at that end of the field, and when Chiffon got to us he was yelling at us, “Yeah Bitch, Yeah Bitch” and flexing. I stood there with my arms crossed because I was pissed that I could have had the cover photo for our magazine.
When I went to the Monday Football Luncheon at Pitt Stadium everyone was giving me shit ‘cuz I was in the AP photo, standing there, arms crossed, rather than getting a great photo.
Ugh.
