  1. It's difficult to get too worked up about a warning coming from a state that puts a warning label on 99% of consumer products that they will give you cancer. Someone should study how much the anxiety being created by all of the fear mongering is impacting the health of the citizens there. There should be warning labels for their warning labels. "WARNING: READING THIS LABEL MAY INCREASE ANXIETY LEVELS. ANXIETY IS KNOWN TO CAUSE HEART ATTACKS, STROKE, AND EVEN WORSE MEDICAL CONDITIONS WE ARE NOT AT LIBERTY TO PUT ON A LABEL."
  2. I guess I missed our large Italian population here. Why is it nearly impossible to find good Italian food in these parts?
  3. There are a bunch of them. Google still works last I checked. More privates will come online soon as vouchers now appear imminent after some reluctant Republicans were run out of office. But there are already tons of them. I don't know where you were looking but you weren't trying very hard.
  4. The pack found in Central Park looks like a Peak Design backpack. Dude could have paid for platinum tier coverage instead of buying that backpack.
  5. Because they are purposefully trying to drive kids in the large cities out of public schools in the inner cities and into the waiting arms of their buddies who run charter and private schools. It's a money grab combined with an attempt to dumb down the population more with religious education (many of these kids will end up in Jesus school where they learn next to nothing of value outside of a church setting). Why? Well the first part is simple. It's about money. The second part is about ensuring there is a next generation of voters dumb enough to keep electing these morons and their successors.
  6. I remember staying in a hostel in Manhattan around thirty years ago. Four bunk beds in a tiny room. One fat middle aged guy who looked to be there on business was asleep when I arrived and asleep when I returned from cavorting about that evening. He snored like a freight train. Everyone in the room gave up their blankets to pile them up on top of him in an attempt to drown out the noise. I was mildly worried he might suffocate but was more concerned with getting some sleep. He was gone when I woke up, so he was either okay, or the staff carted his carcass off while I was sleeping off a doozy of a hangover.
  7. Indeed they have. Glad they're back in the fold, I guess, as we've had to drive a kid across town for imaging more than once because of this drawn out "negotiation".
  8. Sounds like it's time for another case, then. I'll need to look up the language in that ruling, but it is difficult to imagine that the current situation in inner cities doesn't amount to the same infringement of that fundamental right as what was going on in rural communities in the 90s.
  9. Some family members just aren't worth talking to. I can tolerate differing political opinions but draw the line at stupid no matter where it's directed. There are no MAGA lovers in my family, but we've got some stupid folks. I'm not talking about being born with a low IQ and can't help themselves but rather willfully ignorant half-humans.
  10. There are many options for lactose intolerant folks, such as lactose-free ultrapasteurized milk from brands like Fairlife. It has less sugar, more protein, no lactose, and real cow milk. Raw milk drinkers are dumb mother fuckers, and I say this as someone who grew up with dairy cows and drank fresh milk most days. Much like anti-vaxxers, crystal healers, and conspiracy theorists in general, this is more about dumbasses making a feeble attempt to exert some false sense of agency rather than acknowledge how low on the societal rung they exist. The positive news is that this recent political trend of mistaking liberty with the right to do stupid shit that can kill you, and others, will thin the herd and possibly stave off the Idiocracyesque future we're hurtling towards. So take that ivermectin and slam another glass of raw milk, everyone. You might take some innocents with you but also spare humanity from your potential future offspring.
  11. I suspect that, should this approach to trademark infringement cases be adopted more broadly, brand/product disparagement or Lanham Act dilution approaches will expand to incorporate any presumed protections lost. There is far too much revenue to be lost, by entities with the means to prevent it, for this type of shift in trademark law to take hold without things being shored up otherwise.
  12. I think this guy is as big of a douche as exists on the planet at the moment, so don't take what I'm about to type as a defense of the whole man. But - putting clothing on backward is relatively common behavior for high-functioning autistic people. I have no idea if that's what is happening here, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. My son has an IQ in the top .1%, but he comes downstairs with his shirt on backward in the morning more often than he doesn't.
  13. They'll just pull it out of the AISD, DISD, and HISD tax base, the same way we fund every other educational project in the state.
  14. Why are they suddenly getting fired up about issuing tickets in January? What did I miss? Part of me is looking forward to the possibility of some control over the multitudes of dumbass drivers out there, and the other part of me really enjoys never seeing cops around. The part of me that enjoys riding motorcycles really, really, really enjoys never seeing cops around, as they love to harass riders for no reason all the damn time. I've been pulled over before just because a dumbass wanted to check out my bike. He couldn't understand why I was not happy about it and didn't want to hang out and answer all his questions.
  15. Religion, in all its forms, is funny business. We humans are weird.
  16. The insurance fraud story is pretty good. OP was robbed.
  17. I feel guilty in some ways (some version of survivor's guilt, I suppose) that my kids are getting all the help they need despite attending public school because we have the means to ensure it happens outside of the school system, along with the time, energy, and know-how to ensure the educators directly involved are doing their jobs. We can also pull them out and put them in private school any time if needed, or simply pick up and move elsewhere without much fuss. I recognize that the vast majority are not in this position. I mostly feel bad for the poor kids in inner-city schools, though. Most of the people who vote for this nonsense live in areas where it doesn't impact them (big shocker there). Suburban school districts are flooded with resources that inner-city districts do not have (because inner cities have been paying to build up those suburban districts for three decades). This is the game these assholes are playing, and it's kind of hard to blame (although I still do) suburbanites for having their heads in the sand when they don't feel the direct impact of the twats they keep electing to office.
  18. It would be challenging to imagine adults using special needs kids for political and monetary gain if we hadn't already seen it on full display in Texas. Fuck every last one of these people, and yes, they're exactly who you think they are.
  19. Maybe. That game in Lubbock involved some absolute gifts from the refs to help the team get back in the game. Ultimately, despite the assistance, they didn't get it done on the field. The tiebreaker rules were what they were (although to be honest, I'm too many whiskeys away from remembering how all of that went down at the end of that crazy season). It's a shame that ESPN bought the SEC the next year, and things panned out the way they have since. Big 12 football in that decade was fun. It has been a complete shitshow since, so good riddance.
  20. The Big 12 has protected the frontrunners (regardless of which team it is) for the last fifteen seasons at least, and really going back into the aughts. It became worse after the SEC rise and the Big12 became more desperate for relevance. TCU's big season a couple of years back came with a huge assist from the conference and the refs. This is nothing new. College football has always been more about the spectacle than a pure sport, and the imbalance of the leagues has always been insane, whether it's BMDs buying players in the old days or broadcasters manipulating ratings and playoff spots today. That's just how it works because it's not a real sport. It's closer to "pro" wrestling than a sport with enforced parity and actual competition on the field determining champions. No one should be surprised when any conference puts a thumb on the scale. There's too much money involved and too little structure.
  21. Muddies the water a bit, doesn't it? I don't know any details about either kid other than the reports that they were both special needs, but anyone who has worked in education like yourself, or anyone who is the parent of a special needs kid like me, can form a general picture of what might have happened here. It's a tragedy all around. If the comment above that this kid threatened to do this very thing before turns out to be true, the school is going to be in some trouble and rightfully so. Special needs services at public schools in Texas are in dire shape. Between the well-intentioned but ultimately negative impact of inclusive classroom policies and the complete lack of funding, hiring of qualified individuals to work with these kids, etc. we're dealing with today, something has to change and dramatically. I wish I had any answers. EDIT TO ADD: Sorry if this gets a bit cloakroom-ish, but no group is suffering from state leadership's attack on public schools more than the special needs kids. Everyone from the Abbott to Morath to their buddies looking to profit from what's going on, can get fucked and die slowly over a fire, as far as I'm concerned. If there is a hell, people who fuck with special needs kids will be first in line.
  22. Three possible reasons: You're a fucking idiot. You are trying to capture the attention of fucking idiots. Both 1 and 2. My money is on the third option.
