  1. A few practices notes from Dunlap on OB
  2. On Arch’s TD run against A&M, he had the opportunity to block about 4 different defenders and somehow didn’t touch a single one.
  3. I have no hard evidence to back this up other than my own eyeballs, but it feels like elite front 7’s are always going to have the advantage more often than not in college football even when going against quality offensive lines. We saw what our own DL did against Georgia and Ohio State. Their offenses just made the extra play or two to come out on top and at that point you tend to forget some of the bad stuff. I’m beginning to see some bellyaching about Flood on the 9.95 sites and how his unit “underperformed expectations” last year. I certainly expected us to rush for more than 1 yard a carry or whatever it was against Georgia and Ohio State and there are always places for improvement, but it also ran over some good fronts throughout the season and provided quality pass protections despite Ewers having zero pocket presence. You aren’t just going to have your OL manhandle everyone in a 16 game season in the college game.
  4. Practice notes from yesterday (IT)
  5. A few more scrimmage notes from FCB
  6. It is pretty wild to think 3 years ago at this time we were convincing ourselves the primary reason he needed to be our starter was because he was going to open up the deep passing game. 3 years later and your jaw almost hits the floor if he throws a catchable pass over 30 yards. Just an odd career arc. All the usual nice statements apply (won a lot of games, had some great moments, good teammate, good Longhorn). Unfortunately, the NFL doesn’t care about any of that.
  7. A few scrimmage/team notes from Pete Nakos (ON3)
  8. For as wild as Silas Bolden was, I can only recall one muffed punt (Kentucky maybe?) and he was able to recover it. Bolden also had prior experience in college fielding punts. I don’t think Moore has ever stood back there in a live situation. It would have been nice to grab a return specialist/3rd receiver type in the portal but maybe the options weren’t great. You are probably right that it is low on the worry list overall, but I’ll need see him catch a few in Columbus to feel better.
  9. DeAndre Moore at punt returner has me nervous for a variety of reasons. IT mentioned he muffed one today. Ryan Niblett also has me nervous for completely different reasons, mainly the fact that we’ve seen the dude do very little on a football field besides move positions about every 3 months.
  10. I forgot which 9.95 site mentioned it but it sounds like Goosby only played a handful of series before being shut down. Same with Hill and Simmons on defense. Throwing out those young tackles without Goosby against our edge room would cause a lot of issues.
  11. OTF added an update that said both walked off the field under their own power and Brevard came back in later.
  12. Alex Dunlap with some practice notes from today
  13. Interesting post from the OU on3 board regarding Kruel: Nagy loves Kruel and has called him a 5 star publicly at many of his community engagement events. I was present when he used him as an example of a kid they are willing to pay up for. This would go down as a tough loss if he chooses to go elsewhere.
  14. More injuries for OU (from their ON3 site)
  15. That state of the DL reminds me a lot of how we as Texas fans probably feel about our OL. Quite a few older guys who have been around a while but don't have a lot of on-field production. Adding Atkinson from UNC was a solid pickup, but I remember someone noting a while back that half his sack production last year came in one game against Florida State.
  16. Taking only 3 in that class was an unnecessary risk, especially following a developmental class in 2023 where they took Payton Kirkland as the second tackle take and the odds that kid would actually stick around to develop were always around 0%.
  17. I think it’s been mentioned by some 9.95ers he might be a year away but the staff is still high on him. Same with Kibble.
  18. Practice notes from today (IT)
  19. And he was a guard all the way, right? Wouldn't have helped out on the tackle depth front. This is looking about 100 steps ahead, but we could be facing a similar situation next year with replacing a bunch of guys with Hutson and Campbell out of eligibility and Goosby potentially being a draft guy with a strong season. It would be great if Brooks, Kibble, Chatman and Cruz all flashed during the 3-week stretch in September after Ohio State, when they should be getting a healthy amount of second-half snaps.
  20. I've mentioned it before, but we are in such an odd roster cycle along the OL. Hutson, Goosby, Neto, Cojoe, Chatman, Robertson and Campbell are all in at least their 3rd year in the program, but a handful of them are pretty much complete unknowns. I wonder if Neto or Baker (or Cojoe) would have bounced to the portal if the staff brought in another proven player at guard or tackle. That trade-off may have helped us in the short run, but we would still be facing the same depth questions we have today. The 2022 OL class was awesome, but choosing to only take 3 true tackles (Goosby, Payton Kirkland and Baker) in the 2023 and 2024 classes is hurting us badly right now. Chatman and Cojoe felt like coinflips to stick at tackle if everything went right with their development. It was pretty well known heading into the 2023 season that Banks was going to be 3-and-done, Agbo was going to struggle to ever get on the field here, and Williams was a promising wildcard with the potential to be a 3-year player. That should have increased the urgency to get another tackle or two in the pipeline in the 24/25 classes. I don't think many programs are walking around with amazing tackle depth in the era we are in, but we do feel a guy or two thinner than we should be, and I would probably say that even if Cojoe were healthy.
