Can someone give me a compelling reason to vote tomorrow?

Depending on where you live tomorrow is potentially the de facto general election. That's probably the biggest one.

Lawyers/Houston folks - any particular judicial recommendations to sell me on for judicial seats in the Democratic primary? There are so many in Harris County and it can be hard to find good information.

I fundamentally do not understand how the federalists society, fascists, conservative catholic bloc, and Crow disciples think that this leads to a better America.

At its establishment, America was an oligarchy of wealthy, white, Christian men and very few, if any of them intended for it to become anything beyond that. They believe in that vision.

Weird…didn’t think Abbot wanted Federal money?

It's burned well over 1MM acres and has crossed state lines. I don't think he has a choice. And of course, as with everything he does, the political optics are the driver and the optics of refusing Federal aid would be pretty bad. Of course the Panhandle would still vote for him but still.

Again, purely anecdotal, but I look at the Trump fans in my life (relatives, friends, former co-workers, etc.) , and their enthusiasm for him is a fraction of what it was in 2016/2020.  If they are buying MAGA gear, they don’t seem to be showing it off on social media, I don’t see the flags and bumper stickers like before.  It’s noticeable to the extent that seeing Trump 2024 stuff catches my immediate attention.

Of course the Dems have to still turn out.

A fraction of infinity is still infinity.

An actually good poll, holy shit.

I haven't looked into the methodology or crosstabs on this at all but Michigan is not going to be 3-4 points to the left of PA. Those two states will be within a percentage point of one another. Wisconsin I can see drifting right. It is notably whiter, less educated, and more religious than the other two (and MI slightly more so than PA). But it isn't going to be PA and WI flipping by several points and Michigan holding. If PA goes, MI goes.

Keeping the "somewhat disapproves" in the fold has been key to the run of Democratic election wins from 2022-present and is probably one of the most solid, tested data points you can point to in support of Biden's chances. I'd rather not be in the position to have to count on that but it's clearly proven to be real.

Oh, and ok NYT—tell me more about how women have shifted 11 points to the right post-Dobbs.

Yeah it was hard for me to take the NYT poll seriously when I saw the numbers with women. Okay sure. I think the total dismissal of the polls is wishful thinking - there's a real malaise that is being captured there; Biden isn't doing anything about it and is running out of time to do so - but shit like that is impossible to take seriously. Adjust the result among women to something more likely to happen and all of a sudden you're well into statistical tie territory and watching turnout, which I think is ultimately where we'll end up.

  6. Drove my first EV as a rental on a recent trip to CA - a Polestar, which I guess is a car and not a stripper. Cheapest rental option by a mile, through Hertz.

It's like 90% the same but I did notice the quicker acceleration. I also drive a little soy boi Honda Fit on the daily so there are bicycles that accelerate quicker, FWIW. Charging was very easy to find. The technology u[grade over my normal spartan car was more fun than anything.

Hopefully I'm not on the car market for several more years but I'm pretty sure my next vehicle will be an EV.

  7. Flew from DEN to IAH on Tuesday night, flew right over the expanding Panhandle fires. Just surreal to see lines of grass fires as far as the eye could see from 36k feet... in February. I'll have to see if my wife (window seat) got photos. Also caused a shitload of turbulence.

Biden raised $42m in January with $130m COH

Trump raised $9m and has $30m COH

It's interesting but comparing Biden's donor numbers from 2019 to now isn't apples to apples and to portray it in a way that even remotely implies it is is shitty reporting.

Broad Democratic cash advantage, though, that's real and meaningful.

Inveterate Racist?  You're really not gonna like some of the other U.S. Presidents before/after him then.

I was just at the LBJ School/Library  earlier today for the annual Barbara Jordan forum.  Like my feelings on Wilson, I'm still not a fan of LBJ.  But one thing I appreciate about his final years is he basically said "I am a flawed man.  These are my archives.  This is my legacy.  For better or worse, let people learn from my mistakes and my achievements."  The majority of our 46 Presidents were out and out racists.  Was it a product of their times?  Do some get a pass for at least trying to reach out to people of color or end slavery or engage the marginalized?  You students of history can sort that out yourselves.  But I will give LBJ credit for setting the standard of pouring every thing into his library for the world to see and hear and read, for better or worse.  In the end, he acknowledged his flaws like no other President before him.  I suspect Biden will do the same.  And the Waffle House library cafe at the Trump Presidential Library will be the site of the most violent bowel movement I will ever have as an adult.  They're gonna have to drop napalm on it to get the filth out.

LBJ was a racist that personally passed the most consequential civil rights legislation for racial minorities in this country's modern history, surpassed only by Reconstruction Amendments (which he actually put teeth into).

Woodrow Wilson was a racist that purged the Federal Government of black people and honestly would have reinstated slavery if he could.

In fairness, however, it might not have been a creepy predatory thing.   Her name is "Caite Upton", so we do have to leave open the possibility that this was a Four Seasons Total Landscaping type situation where they just bungled trying to book the actual model Kate Upton.

The odds that it was one of the two, though... pretty close to 100%.

I mean checks and balances are a two way street. Wisconsin is one of the 2-3 truly 50/50 states in the county. Getting maps that more orless reflect that out of a legislature that isn't just GOP controlled, but GOP dominated is a win. I don't know what else you expect?

Going back next weekend with some CDMX newbies

    • Chapultepec Castle
    • Coyoacan and Frida Khalo (first time for me on that one)
    • Teotihuacán and La Gruta

Unfortunately, couldn't make any reservations at Pujol or Rosetta, but we had to move our tattoo appointment from Friday afternoon to evening, so we lost a potential good meal time.  Have a cocktail reservation for Friday night and most of Saturday afternoon/evening is being taken up by a baptism.

Is Rosetta that hot of a table? We got stuck in CDMX overnight midweek last May and walked over to Rosetta for dinner. Got a spot on the patio immediately. Wasn't a weekend but you might have luck walking up.

    Was really good, btw.

band today isn’t the same as it was during our time. Hyper competitiveness in athletics has driven a larger number of “cool” and good looking kids into the band, at least at the big Texas high schools.

Cosigned. I was in both band in football through 9th grade and stuck with football after that because I am ugly.

Yeah, kinda sucks it's guaranteed... at least it's just 7 years in case shit hits the fan...

I'm sure the negotiation went: Steve, we'll pay you $10mil a year for 7 years, with X% buy-out. Steve's agent comes back and says, Sark Enterprises demands $12 mil a year with those buyout terms. And UT comes back and says, let's just kill the buyout and stick with the $10mil.

I'm pretty sure "guaranteed compensation" in this context of that screen cap is simply base salary and there is a specific buyout procedure outlined elsewhere in the contract.

I mean, if it is fully guaranteed, we sure did clown on aggy for Jimbo's deal.

Don't know if it's fully guaranteed, it wasn't before (to my knowledge) so I doubt they would do that in addition to such a massive salary increase. This is kind of concern troll-y. Texas's financial situation is also, uh, a little better than aggy's.

We are the Joneses and we’ve got the biggest wallets.  There is no other show in this city—one of the 15 biggest in the country.

Fans of other schools that want to bitch about Texas throwing its weight and money around, fuck right off.

And this is such a weird thing for Texas fans to be proud of. It's an overpay. It is what it is. It's not coming out of the actual school's pocket so I don't care that much but it's a weird thing to spike the football over.

Feels like Tester is the new Joe Manchin in a sense that once the dems lose him, the seat is likely gone forever.  I’m not sure what the solution is long term. How many more terms could we expect from Tester?  Peltola could try running for senate in Alaska?  But I’d probably rather Peltola go the way of Don Young and stay in that seat for the next 40 years.

seems like senate seats are scarcer for dems because the District of Columbia doesn’t have any while the GOP gets senate seats for really small states like Wyoming and north / South Dakota.

Hot take: MT will slowly trend blue and then forcefully flip and never look back ala Colorado.

Still like those two better than Kansas and OK St.   Been there and sone that...

This is honestly fantastic evidence of the power of brands in CFB. Kansas + OSU >> Florida + Kentucky on the field the past couple years. OSU especially, the typical Gundy OSU team over the past 15 years would be the third or fourth best team on Texas's schedule this coming season while Kentucky and Florida will be also rans. Over that time OSU would be the tougher opponent over Florida more often than not. But because Florida is a helmet school and Kentucky is SECSECSEC we get takes like these.

Not wrong of course - ultimately it's a purely subjective matter - just interesting to see play out after years of us bashing the SEC as overrated on this site.

I've never taken a train in North America. I've heard that Amtrak is a city bus on rails and is to be avoided at all costs. Is there a nicer version that would be worth it? I've ridden numerous trains throughout Europe and would highly recommend those. You can pretty much plan an entire trip, for whatever cities you want to see, by train only for most of Europe.

NE corridor Amtrak is fine. Nice even relative to flying or sitting in traffic on 95.

The Pacific coast route is supposedly stunning and a very nice way to cover some ground on a trip out that way.

    That's about it lol.

This is a terrible take and you should feel bad. Games against good teams are fun and provide a focus for the team. We should do that every year- have a big September OOC game- preferably week 2.
Please God let this be the last 8 game conference schedule.

Yep. The gameday buzz around a highly anticipated OOC matchup after a long offseason and the opportunity for novel road trips are two of the best parts of the college football fan experience.

This is supposed to be fun. Playing Michigan is more fun than playing Colorado State.
