The worst thing about the Pacific theater was that there were few or no "rear areas" for a break from combat. There was no Paris or quaint French or Dutch town a short march or drive away.
The island campaigns lasted months at a time and there was some downtime between them, but downtime constituted hanging out on a shitty troop transport and going to a place like Ulithi for a few days, where you got a day or two on an island and got to hang out on a tender, which was not bad.
Trips to Australia or Pearl were few and far between. The best places were like the medical island Leckie was on for a few weeks.
Kind of a different deal, but of the same ilk. My Dad was at sea on a destroyer for more than an entire year. They had a dog on board that was raised from a puppy to a mature dog without setting foot on land.
Yup. My Old Man was with the 25th Infantry when they invaded Luzon. They set a record for continuous days in combat at 165. He was on a ship preparing to head to Japan for the Operation Olympic invasion when the war ended.

Man, I haven't had it in awhile, but Zalat's NY pepperoni might be the best pie in the city.
As a fan of pizza that folds.
For me simple works best. Thin crust that’s crisp on the bottom but chewy in the middle. Fresh mozzarella topped with pepperoni and sprinkled with fresh basil. My all time favorite is Crudo in Frisco. Excellent crust and cooked in a wood fired oven.

I concede that D-Day was a bigger overall operation. It was a staging area for the invasion of a continent and remained a major "seaport" until real seaports could open. Whereas Okinawa was an attempt to secure a very small island.
But, as far as actual amphibious invasions, Okinawa put more men ashore than D-Day on the day of invasion. And do not discount the size and might of the 5th Fleet of the U.S. Navy in April 1945. That was the most powerful naval force in history.
Hardly ever mentioned is The Battle of Luzon. They landed around 175,000 initially. It’s said to be the largest net causality battle(KIA+injured+disease) of WWII.
Over 17,000 Americans are still buried there, which I believe is more than anywhere but Arlington, VA.

Others here will know more, but when my daughter and I visited colleges in March, the area around Reed looked pretty nice. Cool homes, restaurants and bars, etc.
Friends just bought a house by Reed on Steele St. Nice neighborhood. Mostly 40s and 50s houses. Pretty campus. Woodstock area nearby has all the little shops and Restaurants.

I don't read a ton of non-fiction these days but ready through this as a neighbor's suggestion a few months ago and absolutely loved it.
PBS American Experience has an episode on this called The Boys of 36.

From looking at the episode titles and the matching soundtrack, the whole Outlaw/Austin scene gets huge coverage - it's one of the main parts of Episode 7's description (specifically mentions Willie and Waylon creating the Outlaw scene), and then Episode 8's description specifically calls out Randy Travis and George Strait as getting back to the roots.
Wonder if David Allan Coe get a mention. To controversial and over the top?

I'll almost certainly get flamed, but I think it jumps around too much. More Hank Williams and Johhny Cash and less Everly Brothers.
At a minimum keep the narrative consistent. One episode for bluegrass, one for Western Swing, one for Rockabilly, and so on.
What made the WWII documentary so interesting is that it focused on central characters, and told their stories throughout the war.
The West is by far Ken Burns' most underrated work. It's too often overlooked.
That’s kinda what I thought when he went to Elvis. But it was more in the context of the evolution of the music and how it helped lead to the decline of the traditional genre, so I’m OK with it.

Been rumored for forever. Maybe something is actually happening now. Per wiki:Leonardo DiCaprio purchased the film rights to the book in 2010. The film version, as originally planned, would have been directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Billy Ray, and produced jointly by Paramount Pictures, Double Feature Films, and DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions.[2][3][4]
In 2019, Hulu began developing a series based on the book. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese will executive produce the project along with Stacey Sher, Rick Yorn, Emma Koskoff, and Jennifer Davisson. Paramount Television will produce

I like that about their offense. They might as well hold up the clipboard like the opposing defense is running scout team, and they’re still gonna out-execute their opponent. Doesn’t matter if you know the play or not...
Their Wing T/ Slot T and variations are pretty fun to watch. They will do it in a kinda hurry up fashion and use a lot of motion. It can be tough to defend and they can and will throw the ball too. I think they were 7 on 7 runner up in 2018.

So many tie ins to O Brother Where Art Thou songs and stories like the Carters “singing in a can”.
The Coen Bros actually beat Ken Burns to this. There was an Indie film that same year called "Songcatcher"
In 1907, Dr. Lily Penleric (Janet McTeer), a professor of musicology, is denied a promotion at the university where she teaches. She impulsively visits her sister Eleanor (Jane Adams), who runs a struggling rural school in Appalachia. There, she discovers a treasure trove of traditional English and Scots-Irish ballads, which have been preserved by the secluded mountain people since the colonial period of the 1600s and 1700s. Lily decides to record and transcribe the songs and share them with the outside world.
The film's score was written by David Mansfield, who also assembled a roster of female country music artists to perform mostly traditional mountain ballads. Some of the songs are contemporary arrangements, and some are played in the traditional Appalachian music style. The artists include Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Maria McKee, Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch and Patty Loveless. Singers Emmy Rossum, Iris DeMent, and Hazel Dickens, who appeared in the film, are also featured on the soundtrack.
Worth a look if you haven't seen it.

Badlands, Texas. Nat Geo documentary series on the killing of Glen Felts in Terlingua outside of his La Kiva bar.
Especially interesting if you’re familiar with the place and the people down there.
