I’ve told this story before, but when you were really young and before, MMA played an independent schedule against mostly valley big school teams. They played Harlingen, San Benito, and later South every year and they just got wasted each year.

Some wealthy MMA alums decided they were sick of it and embarked on a project. They’d promise to get grades up for kids needing to get their scores to play NCAA ball and went out and recruited D1 level athletes in football and basketball. They’d even take kids after their senior year and play them as long as they didn’t graduate. They recruited Nigerians to play hoops. All legit because they didn’t play in a league.

And for a few years it was just a BLOODBATH.  They made “City Championship” banners and would just kill every team in the valley.  They then recruited a kid from HHS who was a good DB but had grade problems and that was the end of the fun.  Valley schools told them to go to hell and didn’t schedule them.  They kept it up for a while, playing a crazy schedule with teams far away but eventually packed it in and joined one of the private leagues and cut that shit out.

If I recall, that was back in the mid 90s or so?      Another thing that helped end it was they got in a big brawl with one school down there with those same players.

Now they fill up their  schedules with Progresso, Santa Rosa, etc.

Anything ya'll can tell me about contract work other than what I find on my own?   I had ruled this out initially but since my hunting has been so spectacularly putird I'm considering it.

    I know the following:

    1.   Depends on whether it's W-2 or 1099.  That affects withholding.

    2.   Little or no benefits and a day off is unpaid.

    3.  The obvious of no job security and having to look for something new every few months.

Curious what people around here have done.

You pretty much covered the key points.   Most are 1099.   It’s is a good way to get in the door for a potential full time or W-2 employee.  Hope you find something soon!

Hi Horn Fans, looking forward to meeting all of you at the Sugar Bowl!  If you're going to the game, come stop by our tailgate in the #5 lot - just look for the blue "Ribs and Rickshaws" (long story, don't ask) canopy tent. Anyways, I can't wait to chow down on fried okra and chug some Red Stripe beer with all of you. Hooooray beer!

This will be my first time visiting Shreveport (but not my first time in the swamp if you catch my drift), and while I know it's several states away from Texas, I understand you guys are basically the home team. Personally I think that's really unfair since we're the higher seed, and the LA Bowl should have been slotted into the playoffs instead of the Sugar Bowl. But whatever, this won't be our first time overcoming east coast bias. I say BRING IT ON!

Anyway, I think UW has a really good chance to go all the way this year. Here are 5 reasons why I like my DAWGS to win.

    1. Michael Big Penix Energy Jr. He is the best player on the field, enough said on that. Heisman winner, Maxwell Trophy winner, Bilentikoff runner-up. He has 4 years of high school and 6 years of college under his belt and will do whatever he can to win the game.

    2. Offensive Line. We average a weight of 332 across the line, and they are ready to dominate the line of scrimmage. Roger Rosegarden, Jackson Powers-Johnson, Center, Ossai, Big "Orange Julius" Buelow. These boys have an attitude and are ready to rumble!!!

    3. Chuck "Steak" Morell. A new defensive scheme and a new attitude. Everyone is raving about the difference between our game plan since firing Inge and slotting Chuck into his role at DC. Don't be fooled by the stats, this defense has taken a HUGE step forward under new leadership and the stats speak for themselves.

    4. Speed, speed, speed. This is the fastest team Washington has had this century, probably since the Legion of Zoom team from 2014! Rome Odunze, Germs Bernie, Ja'Lynn McClatcher, Ja'Lynn Polk, Ja'Lynn "catches more than he drops" Mickens, Nate Fellner. This is a deeply veteran lineup, but it's the new guys who have really changed the complexion of this team. We haven't seen this much speed since the Legion of Zoom team from 2014.

    5. Time of possession. I think we can win the time of possession battle in this one. the more we can control the ball and keep our defense off the field, the greater chance we’ll have to win.

I think UW wins this one rather easily, say...34-17?

Red Stripe Beer?    This isn’t Jamaica man.

Summer Creek is the school in Humble Texas.

#11 is listed on their roster as 6'3" and #210.  Granted, rosters can be embellished, but he's a normal sized human being.

Summer creek, Spring Creek, Fall Creek……  Too many schools named after creeks just like too many especially in South Texas are named Veterans Memorial.     Not a dig at our fallen soldiers, but it gets confusing .

    Rotate the games.

Make the 6A teams play on fucking Wednesday too.

Logistically it has some validity.   The argument used is the attendee angle and at least 3A through 6A, at least one of the teams is going to be within a two to three hour drive of the stadium.   In 5A and 6A that will likely be less.   Would a SOC, Duncanville, Aledo or DeSoto game on a Wednesday or Thursday draw a good number?

Medina Valley ISD is about to build a new high school. They have enough space and people moving to their area that it's pretty dumb to even do. Just build one massive high school, invest in super nice football stadium, indoor practice facility and they could become a  power in SA. 40k homes are being built in that district area.

Medina Valley should’ve focused on getting good the last few years and they haven’t.    They would’ve been a perfect to follow a model like Lake Travis before they rose from mediocrity.    True they don’t have the $$ like LT, but they are not begging for any either.

State baseball tournament is at Disch or Round Rock....soooooo.  I mean you can bitch but the population center of Texas isn't south of that, so it isn't happening.

I’ve been to it a few times and have zero problem with at in Austin/ Round Rock because it’s a true central location being the closest to Brady which is the true geographical center of Texas. .  My point is next to football, its a sport that has high interest and fan bases that will follow and if the north Texas powers had to play in San Antonio year in a year out or heaven forbid further south, they’d be asking why can’t they have it up there.

Ofc Jerry isn't but NRG is SUPER expensive. As much as you want to hate Jerry he's giving UIL the best deal they could get because Jerry does actually want the games there.

I don’t think the UIL ever makes a serious effort to reach out and sit the table for others.   I can be certain if they sat down with NRG and The Alamodome folks and said we’d like to rotate this event and every three years you will get it for the next 10 or 20 seasons, it could be done.   I just see the UIL as not a serious player at the table because the same excuses about attendance being low at NRG is used and the lack of Lockroom space at the Alamodome. The Alamodome thing can be fixed easily if the UIL just showed some serious intent.

None of these facilities and the UIL will make a huge bank of ticket sales after expenses.  It’s all coming from key sponsor and TV revenue.

FWIW Jerry actually charges very little compared to other venues in the state. Which means more for the schools and that is best case scenario IMO.

Jerry isn’t losing any money on this thing.

The big elephant in the room is the TV package and with Bally Sports gone bankrupt and divesting itself of its deals in has with the pro teams in their respective markets, it will be interesting to see how long this last anyway.

THSCA overwhelmingly wants all games at Jerryworld.

THSCA would all vote themselves a $50k  raise too which some would argue would be just right for some HC/AD’s, but that doesn’t mean its feasible.   I’d guess most of the THSCA voting bloc that would favor it at Jerryworld until it crumbles are all within a two to three hour drive and add that to some  some struck coaches who only dream about it from the 956 and other areas, that’s where you get your overwhelming support.

Put it to you this way.  If the Alamodome was something special and the games were played there multiple years, the North Texas coaches and their boses in the Superintendents would’ve had this on a rotational schedule already.  The UIL listens to them more than they do us poor hicks south of San Antonio and that is a fact.  Go look at the different committees on both the athletic and non athletic sides and the further south you go, the less representation is found.

I’d like to see them move baseball down here for a tourney  or two and you’d see how quick the DFW metro coaches would scream.

The novelty/aura of playing at Jerryworld is gone. It needs to go back to multiple sites.

They should spit it into two weekends if the aim is to keep a TV package going.    Along with that rotate it to different sites.   Have six man through 3A at one site and 4A through 6A at another.  Get rid of the Wednesday and Thursday nonsense too.

To me it was the small schools having not as many fans. And if you look at the small school teams it makes sense.

The smaller schools 4A and below with a few exceptions never pack them and part of that is because they start playing their games on Wednesday.   It’s tough for some of those fans to get time off to make that long drive if you are from West Texas or south of Austin.    It’s an expense too.   When I went back in 2016, it was easily a $500 trip for four.  It’s probably $800 now when you throw in hotel, fuel, meals, tickets, parking.   It adds up!

To me, it looked like more people were there for the PNG/SOC game than any others.

It looked like it too.  PNG travels well and it helped them even more having their game on Saturday helped push their numbers higher.

The fans that get the shaft are the lower classifications which many of the schools in those classes that make it don’t sit within a couple of hours from Jerryworld.   Those fan bases in some cases don’t have the resources to pay for $30 parking on top of all the other costs to get there if they can get there.   Small town folks just can’t take off work on a whim too on short notice

This whole concept needs to be reevaluated.   UIL is supposed to provide as neutral as possible venues for their championships and not fleece the very taxpayers who fund the organization.
