I would say you can say "I can hear what you're saying" and still not agree with the demands completely.  In a sense you're right.  I have no idea what their minds are like.  Im sure it even differs amongst them. In the same way, you don't know what my mind or the other posters you mentioned are like 100 percent.  I already said earlier I think they will walk away from this thinking they did a good job while not really accomplishing much in the bigger picture.  It sets up a weird precedent where every time something happens that's bad you run in with a list of demands on the University to make change even though the University didn't have anything to do with the crime.  And if you disagree with the demands then you apparently don't care about the players which is absurd.

Oh for crying out loud, of course I do not know your mind, or others. I have not claimed to, and explicitly said that I don't. It's like this concept is foreign to you.

You are the one who has, however, by saying this will not make them feel better. Why do you think that? In the post below this you say this is trivial. How can you say what is trivial to someone else, particularly when they have specifically said that this is not trivial but has caused and continues to cause hurt? That is the arrogance that just blows my mind.

And I do agree with you that you do not necessarily have to agree on actions or next step but dismissal comes from a weird place to me.

I'll ask you this. I was responding to a post that said its amazing the change these athletes can accomplish with the power they hold or something to that effect. What makes you so sure these symbolic changes will really make a difference. I'm not arguing these changes shouldn't happen, there should be no statues of racists or buildings named after racists on campus. My argument is it's not going to bring about significant change in the long run. My question is how far is everyone willing to go. Is Red McCombs next on the hit list for saying Charlie Strong would only make a good coordinator at UT, he's not head coach material. There was a lot of racism claims thrown at Red around here or Shaggy I guess. No one will dare say anything before he kicks the bucket, gotta get some of his $$$ when he goes.

I will answer you, as I answered the question you asked me in your previous reply. It's simple: I don't know that. I am not proclaiming that this will solve any issues at all. However, I do think that we should listen and even take people at their word when they say something bothers them. Not even saying we have to take action, but at least believe them.

Now will you answer the question I have asked over and over? Why are you sure that the present situation DOESN"T bother them, especially when they have said it does? That was your claim, that you knew their minds and feelings.

I feel like a lot of this discussion has been blown out of proportion so to clear up any misconceptions.....

    3.  I really don't care if the players and students want to take down the statues or rename the buildings.  It's just not really going to accomplish anything and I don't really think its gonna make anyone feel better but whatever.  I think changing the song is asking for a lot.  That's where it becomes a witch hunt in my opinion.

    4.  The idea that if you don''t agree with some of the aspects that are going on makes you a bad person is not the way to handle this.  We have a lot of people on this site that are pandering because of a ridiculous sense of white guilt.  The implication is that if you don't agree with what the kids want right now then you don't care about them or black lives.  This is an absurd notion.  So if I don't agree with what they want then I must think the way things are currently are perfect and no need for change. That's also an absurd contention.  But this performative "woke" virtue signaling from white people who are taking on sins that were not theirs so as to take the sins of a broader group of people who are not them.   Meaning when you a performative woke liberal and they say "Im taking on the sins of my ancestors" really means "Im not taking on the sins of my ancestors all the other white people who don't agree with me are taking on the sins of the ancestors."  That's what's troubling.

Clipping to address what I think is a real issue. I will ask you the same thing that I asked @HRSchenker and @CfRhTxStBobcats (and which they refuse to answer for some reason). Why are you convinced that you know what the result of these actions will be. You have a group of students and athletes looking for a change (presumably something that will make them feel better) and you are saying they are wrong. How can you know their minds and expectations better than they do?

I can only speak for myself, but I don't think disagreement about the next step indicates racism. But I do think that assuming you know how a group feels without even talking to them comes pretty darn close. Not in the "n-word" or denying an apartment level, but definitely in the "I know more that that group does" level. It is not white guilt or "wokeness" to say "I hear what you are saying. You have a voice", especially when that voice has not previously been heard.

How do you know they are so different from Mr Schenker and myself? I'm pretty sure you know nothing about me or my background. I guess time will tell if these changes make a difference. I guess from now on everyone on this board everyone should start with IMO before 90% of posts.

I don't know. I even stated explicitly that I am not saying you are wrong. I agree that I know nothing about you or your background, so I am not sure why you think that I do. I only thought it was odd that you both stated that you were sure you knew how other groups felt. I don't think you need to add IMO to your post as that is implied. But if I stated that (to just make up an example) Indian people just fucking love Burger King, I would expect to be called on that if that is contrary to expectation.

To be quite clear, I know nothing about the Canadian National Anthem situation, as an example. I do presume, however, that in that case, women felt more aggrieved and tried to change the anthem. It is still a mystery to me why @HRSchenker then feels certain that they didn't feel it sexist. And again, to be, clear, he may be right! But is this surety coming from talking to anyone affected? Same for you? Have you talked to black students or former athletes about the names of buildings? Maybe you have, I don't know. Please enlighten me!

  5. 22 minutes ago, HRSchenker said:

Inevitably these conversations wind up coming down to someone saying "this is my truth". There is no such thing as "your truth". There's just the truth. The Eyes is not racist. The Canadian national anthem was not sexist. You find me one alumnus who says that the stars and bars fill their hearts when they sing the alma mater and I'll change my mind.

But you didn't say that you don't find it sexist and you didn't claim that it is not objectively sexist. You specifically said that you don't think Canadian women find it sexist. What led you to this conclusion?

  6. 1 hour ago, HRSchenker said:

A fraternity brother was texting me this morning and reminded me that Canada changed their national anthem because "true patriot love in all thy sons command" was deemed to be sexist. Now it's "true patriot love in all of us command." Did Canadian women really find that song offensive? I find that hard to believe just like I find it hard to believe that The Eyes Of Texas is being dismissed as racist.

But hey I believe in consistency. Now that we're moving forward away from racism and intolerance, I expect Tom Herman to restrict some of the music being played in the locker room. No more southern boy redneck nonsense. No more hip hop using racial slurs.

Except those changes really changes nothing. I'm pretty sure a vast majority of students and student athletes have no idea whom all of those buildings were named after until someone got in their ear recently. Buildings, change the names, I couldn't care less, tweak the damn song, not that difficult, donating money or else, that's extortion.

@HRSchenker and @CfRhTxStBobcats, why are both of you so sure you understand those view points of people different from you? How many Canadian women have you talked to about this issue? What about black students or athletes? Why do you presume your opinion is the universal one? I am not saying that either one of you is wrong, by the way, but the surety of knowing someone else's mind is surprising to me.

  8. And there is still the completely cowardly lack of follow-through on thought. Ok, so you recognize that not all minorities are equally disadvantaged. You even recognize the Nigerian immigrants do better than US-born African Americans. But wait, if it's not systemic racism, then tell me, WHY is it they US-born African Americans are disadvantaged? Something in the culture, something in the genes, something else? If it is not systemic racism, please, I would love to hear the explanation. Is it really just the democratic party as the author suggests?

Fair point.  It does drive my desire to create a new thread where those of us who are able to can have a place to shit on both parties.  A man can dream.

It was my cry for help.  That the Democrat and Republican Party leaderships burn for all eternity.  I just went about it entirely wrong.  At least I had some pithy jokes way back up top to be remembered by.

This thread has literally called for his death.  In both literal and metaphorical words.  But I called him a cunt and you folks suddenly got religion?  You’re sanctimonious you know whats.  Both sides deserve to burn.  At least I’ll know I did something other than whine to help my country.

That must have been a hell of a 16 minutes. From (I think sincere?) "Fair point ... I just went about it entirely wrong" to temper tantrum. Stay strong Lobo.

It's amazing how ineffectual you and your party will prove to be against the largest evil our nation has faced since Imperial Japan.  Your party starts a trend called "Bunker Bitch" and passes out from high-fiving one another.  I chime in a with a couple of other similar insults and I ruined everything for gender relations.  None of you are helping the cause, you're whiney bitches.  Fuck off.  Let the rest of us do the heavy lifting.

Jesus you get self-important sometimes. You didn't ruin shit. You just took things farther than made some people comfortable. They told you. And then you throw this shit-fit and complain that you are the only one acting like an adult. My 9 year old is doing the same thing right now.

Good lord, you pack of fucking self-righteous cunts.  Just forget what I wrote, request its deletion, miss the point entirely, and let the President have free range over language.   Of course the point of the story sailed clear over your heads.  I guess my pithiness thusfar hasn't proven effective.

Every once in awhile I wonder how my old party managed to beat the piss out of y'all.  Now I know.

It's called "BUNKER BITCH"  How the fuck is that a million+ twitter trend, but suddenly you get religion with a passing, comedic post by guy on here.  How the fuck are y'all that naively stupid?  Your stupid fucking team invented the whole trend, but now one guy on a small college thread is the asshole?  (I mean, I am, but not because of this).  It's impossible you're this naive with regard to political trends.  Your fucking party came up with "BITCH" as a hashtag.  It was you fucking cuntstains.  How are you not getting this, you shit for brain vulvas?  Keep up the "We must remain above the fray because we're so special and mighty."  See where that gets you every two years you Beto shitmonkeys.

It's amazing how much wordier and more effort this takes than "You know what, you're right. I didn't think about that, and will try to keep that in mind in the future."

i saw that on the living room tv in passing. i facepalmed. what the actual fuck, dude? are they trying to throw the election?

Repeating the question is rookie level. Follow up with the natural conclusion: "Oh, so is the fact that black people are disproportionately likely to be in jail due to some inherent quality of being a black person? Does being black make you more likely to commit a crime?

  14. 34 minutes ago, BrickHorn said:

Maybe, but it sure sounds like excuse-making for poor PR. It’s like BLM. Does the choir we’re preaching to understand that “Black Lives Matter” doesn’t mean “Only Black Lives Matter?” Sure. But the purpose of a slogan is to persuade some of those who didn’t previously agree with you.

The simple inclusion of “, Too” from the start would have avoided countless pointless discussions with people who don’t actually disagree with the real sentiment of the movement but who are easily distracted by cynical trolls and their deliberate misinterpretation. It hasn’t been a complete PR failure, but the effectiveness of the BLM movement was hampered by inadvertent ambiguity in the slogan.

We can bitch and complain about how stupid and easily confused undecided American voters are, but that’s the reality of the world. Any progressive movement should expect cynical pushback from the right. Because that is what always happens.

Black lives matter is not ambiguous. You should reach out to the community who created the slogan and let them know your opinion on how it should have been named.

First of all I posted this on the wrong thread obviously. Secondly some fucking prick accused me of being a racist because of unrelated issues we have with each other without provocation.

Doxxed is the wrong term. Libel would be a better term.

I thought maybe it was because you wouldn't shut up about Texas.

So gif stands for graphics interchange format but it’s pronounced ‘jif’?

What kind of commie bullshit is that?

How do you say SCUBA? Radar? Laser? NASA? Those are all acronyms (although clearly radar and laser have become pretty dissociated from their origins). I am team "jif" and don't really give much of a shit how anyone pronounces it. That said, arguments centered around the fact that the "g" in graphic should guide pronunciation makes no sense, given that is not how acronyms work.

Drive by dropping a tweet with not commentary, interpretation, or discussion accomplishes none of those things.

He's trolling hayden.  You know exactly what it is.

ETA: Just my opinion, and I am probably in the minority on this.  There is a lot of useful information shared via embedded tweets, especially video content and sports content that is not easily linked via another method.  The vast majority (esp in the CR) however, are tweets pushing an interpretation of an article or another piece of primary source material. Often time those interpretations are incomplete and/or misleading and/or downright lunatic nonsense. Often times they simply serve as a vehicle for somebody to express a point of view that they don't care the invest enough time to formulate for themselves. Other times its just a trolling data dump with no context or discussion.

Disable the tweet function on some of the sub forums (looking at the CR in particular).  There are some posters here who do almost nothing but retweet this forum with their feed. If you see an article that you want to discuss, link it. Share your thoughts and interpretation?  Point out what you find interesting and what you agree and disagree with. Don't outsource your ability to read, interpret, and communicate your thoughts to fucking twitter. I mean, at a fucking minimum discuss the twat. This is a discussion board. Drive by tweet reposting does not accomplish any of the objectives you mention above.  It in facts stifles it.

100% agree with you on the edit. Dropping a link to an article without saying what is important or why it should be read or linking a video / tweet with no context is really irritating.

Reputations matter.  Online.  In life.  Case in point.  To the OP, politics are fine, as long as they can stay semi-objective and devolve into cunty partisanship, ala the CR.  That's the hard part of moderating, separating out those that seem to want to have a dialogue from those that are just an talking-point-spouting ideologue.....

Do you think you have a reputation of political / social beliefs? While not everything you post is political by any means, I don't think anyone would have to try real hard to figure out where you stand on a given issue. Similarly, if BurntEyes posts something about gun, given his passionate and out-spoken beliefs on 2A, is that immediate dismissal into CR?

I don't think it should be, for either of you. Reputations do matter, but content should matter more.
