Not to be the thread police or anything, but please take the Hamas/Israel argument shit to the Israel thread please.
Let's get some on-topic focus, maybe regarding what happened yesterday, Abbott's involvement, the GQP's ownership of Hartzell, and/or the UT System's regents. We could also view it through the prism of enshittifying higher education in Texas, much like its K-12 schools.
I don't want to slog through that whole debate about antisemitism versus islamophobia again. I honestly think that's incidental to what the fuck is acutally going on.

An IDF soldier got into trouble for spitting on an Armenian bishop a few years back, some seminarians got into a fight with some haredi over it, and there have been numerous other instances of physical violence break out as a result. The clergy in the holy land have been filing complaints about the practice for a long time now.
Gotta love religious extremists, no matter the stripe.

Being pro Palestine is not being anti Israel. I do think that this was a poor judgement on all fronts.
AGREED.
Columbia getting on the news for the wrong things is not good for all the other protests. It’s like BLM riots vs BLM protests. It all turned bad once the riots happened one place because inevitably everyone thinks it devolves to riot.
MOSTLY AGREE, BUT THERE'S ALSO BEEN A LOT OF PRESSURE ON THE MEDIA TO PORTRAY PROTESTS IN THE WORST LIGHT - JUST LIKE BLM.
UT students after getting not approved should have worked to get approval or put the shit on blast and do a PR campaign for free speech.
THEY WERE NEVER GOING TO GET APPROVAL.
Texas Admin fucked up for not approving a protest that seemed fine.
ENTIRE UT SYSTEM IS UNDER TX GQP'S THUMB. SEE MY POST ABOVE WHERE FREE SPEECH ON PALESTINE @ UT-ARLINGTON AND UT-DALLAS IS ALSO GETTING STIFLED. SAME GOES FOR A PROF AT TECH GETTING CANNED.
State fucked up by sending in literally riot police.
SENDING IN RIOT POLICE ISN'T A GLITCH. IT'S A FEATURE.
Texas president fucked up because he did nothing when he was supposed to be leading.
LET'S WAIT & SEE IF HE LOSES HIS JOB OVER IT.
We really shouldn't look at yesterday's incident in a vacuum, nor should we see the general assault on Texas public and higher education as one, either.

I strongly disagree with your imagined ratio and would bet that far more than 10% "give a fuck" about how the protest was mishandled yesterday. It's not CR to be concerned with what happened; it's just reality.

LOL. Newsflash. 90%+ of alumni and donors don't give a fuck about the West Mall and whatever flavor of the month protest is in the news even if this was mishandled. Most of us saw it and rolled our eyes every time we walked past when we were on campus. Hartzell and Eltife paved the way to the SEC and a competitive football team. They have kept UT a respectable institution of higher learning for those that want to get educated and get a good job. They are golden.
I'll have to disagree with you there as both a UT-Austin alumnus (M.S. 1999) and the parent of a college kid. I'm fucking pissed about what happened on the 40 acres yesterday and won't give a dime to The University until Hartzell is gone. And, if I heard about riot police assaulting students on the campus of my daughter's college, I'd be livid and call for the head of her university's president.

Jews being chased through campuses is not a trivial issue. You should be embarrassed taking the position, "stop bringing that shit up". What the fuck is wrong with you?
I didn't say it was trivial. I said it was peripheral to what happened yesterday. And, to my knowledge, the extreme harassment you keep talking about that has happened elsewhere hasn't happened on the UT campus. I can cite an instance of a pro-Palestinian protestor getting stabbed in West Campus a couple of months ago, though, if you're interested.

Intimidation of groups of people is dead fucking wrong. fuck you and anyone who allows situations like Cooper Union, the literal harassing intimidation of others.
And NO there is not evidence I have seen that harassing intimidation happened at UT yesterday.
This is correct. None of that shit happened on campus yesterday. Therefore, the overwhelming and thuggish response by DPS was completely fucking unnecessary. Everything else is peripheral, so stop bringing that shit up.
What the cops did yesterday turned this whole thing from a pro-Palestinian protest into something that strikes at the core of what it means to be an American: the violent suppression of Free Speech by the State.

Well you see, they're orcs. The pro-Israeli protestors are the only humans.
That's right. Who gives a shit if a pro-Palestinian protester gets stabbed for wearing a keffiyeh near the UT campus?
QuoteZacharia Doar, 23, was grabbing a bite to eat with three of his friends Sunday after attending a rally in support of Palestinian rights and calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.
The group said they were near the intersection of Nueces Street and West 26th Street when a man riding a bike tried to rip a flagpole with a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf reading "Free Palestine" off their truck.
The victims told police the man, who has been identified as 36-year-old Bert James Baker, repeatedly screamed the N-word and other obscenities at them, opened the passenger door and pulled one man out of the truck and attacked him. The three others got out to fight him off. Baker then allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Doar in the chest, breaking one of his ribs.
Hell, they don't even have to be protesting. Simple wearing a keffiyeh is apparently enough to warrant getting shot. This intimidation will not stand, right @Bevo?
QuoteNov 27 (Reuters) - A suspect was arrested in the shooting of three college students of Palestinian descent in Vermont, local police reported early on Monday, an attack under investigation as a suspected hate-motivated crime.
A man with a pistol shot and wounded the three victims on the street near the University of Vermont in Burlington on Saturday evening and then ran away, police said in an earlier statement.
A suspect, identified as Jason J. Eaton, 48, was arrested on Sunday afternoon, the department later confirmed. Burlington police and the mayor's office will hold a news conference later on Monday to discuss the incident and arrest, the police said.
Two of the victims are U.S. citizens and the third is a legal U.S. resident, all 20 years old, police said. At the time of the attack, two of the men were wearing a keffiyeh, the traditional black-and-white checkered scarf worn in Middle East, police said.

2 minutes ago, YGIFS said:Fair point. It does seem at this initial phase that Hartzell was only made aware after the wheels were in motion (pun intended). He did have time to course-correct, but didn't. And even if he had the forces in progress were over his head. I'm more disappointed in him than most of y'all because I've seen his better character. This was an absolutely fuckup from the Governor to the Capitol to DPS to the System to the Tower, and all points in between. I will stop making excuses and let the situation play itself out. But the bad news is, this was very much telegraphed and our shame has only yet to begin. And that came at a time when the people that did this clamor for "free speech/1A!" will only make it more shameful and painful for current students and alums alike. The Regents and THECB and UT System knew this was coming, but they had no idea the scope of embarrassment that would accompany it. We're stuck in some serious shit for awhile. Buckle up...
And they will continue to try to gaslight us about the nature of the protest.

But, but, but Brisket, MacKenzie says the protestors were there "to scare, threaten, and intimidate Jewish Austinites."
And, look, I don't doubt one bit that antisemitic bullshit gets thrown around. Hell, we've seen it on this very site, and I'm even uncomfortable with TheJewsDidThis gif, but I refuse to be gaslit by dimwits who claim to represent my interests and me.

You provided no proof of the antisemitism. Your statement was vague and sounded like an accusation for all protesters there hating Jews.
There was zero verbal or physical aggression toward our Jewish students among the several videos I watched today. Unfortunately, some posters are too easily swayed by national media and too lazy to look shit up themselves.
In the background of some of these photos, you can see both Israeli and Palestinian flags held aloft by students standing side-by-side.
From here, you can watch several minutes of video taken by the Fox7 cameraman, who would be arrested later, standing among students holding or wrapped in Israeli flags. None of them are being harassed. You can also listen to the chanting of protestors, and nothing they say is derogatory toward Jews or Israel.
And look at these two cute Israel supporters surrounded by protestors. They look absolutely terrified!

This account from someone on r/UTAustin lines up with everything we've seen in the videos: https://www.reddit.com/r/UTAustin/comments/1ccgfhi/what_happened_at_ut_austin_today_in_detail/
QuoteHere are the facts:
- Protests of nearly equal or even larger size have occurred with a small UTPD presence and resulted in 0 arrests or disruptions (such as one on Nov. 9)
- State Troopers showed up at 11:40 in riot gear when the protests hadn’t even began, so they couldn’t have been responding to violence.
- State Troopers let people march for an hour on speedway and randomly declared the march illegal at 12:40 for blocking a roadway. They ordered people to disperse but also blocked people from leaving.
- When people then moved to south mall to not block speedway, they then declared all of south mall illegal to be on. They pushed the crowd onto sidewalks and created a danger of students being trampled
- Students got an email from UT Austin that declared anyone in the south mall area to be a rioter at 5:18pm
- After fencing the normally publicly available south mall off, police jumped over their own fences to arrest random people not on the mall, but on the sidewalks. They arrested compliant students, a Fox News journalist, an elderly protestor, and shoved around many professors.
- Troopers then declared the entire sidewalk off limits, and pushed the students from the sidewalk onto a street, blocking it off with a line of bike cops and horse police.
- For the first time in the day people students were actually obstructed, but not by protestors: UT staff and cops banned anyone from south mall, it’s sidewalks, and blocked a street off next to it with bike cops. If they tried to get to class using any of these routes, a cop (not a protestor) might slam them.
- The state troopers and APD randomly left around 7pm. (I have no idea why they would turn their backs on “violent rioters” without being attacked, calmly walk away, and let the "violent rioters" go back to a campus)
- Protestors returned to the south mall after 7pm. They did the same thing they would’ve done if the police never showed up: sat on the mall chanting while people freely walked by.
Why did all of this happen? This was an unconditional political stunt by Greg Abbott. He sent the troopers in advance to disrupt any pro-Palestine events on campus, even if legal & peaceful.
They didn’t just wait until violence occurred before sending riot police. Because they knew violence likely wouldn’t break out and therefore they wouldn’t have a reason to arrive.
They didn’t simply order police to arrest violent individuals, because there wouldn’t be any, and they wouldn’t be able to disrupt the event. This is why they declared an entire area illegal.
This was a pre-planned attempt by UT Officials and Abbott to silence people peacefully protesting. Abbott said it himself on Twitter; he believed UT students belong behind metal bars not because they hurt anyone, but he dislikes what they think. Abbott did this to score points with his party and donors.
Shame on UT officials for going along with this anti-constitutional political stunt and getting students heads slammed on concrete, people’s futures jeopardized, and professors shoved around by cops so Abbott could get some favorable headlines.
