Israel

46 minutes ago, Make em eat Taco Bell said:the Israelites already have everything. We just want everyone living there to have the same rights as the Jews, whose army is never leaving, and become Israelite citizens. This is the 1 state solution that is mainstream.
your mockery has failed young skywalker.
Ah, that's where you're wrong, my jejune Jar Jar. They could have really friendly neighbors and never have to worry about security again. Hell, they wouldn't ever need a dang army. And can you imagine what kind of awesome fucking canteloupe-, nopal-, and yucca-based dishes they could come up with? My gawd.
Make em eat Kosher Bell!
So, instead of kicking out 2.2 million brown people for everlasting security, we'd only have to kick out less than 40k. Of course, this would mean the Israelis must "volunteer" to make this happen.
Never mind that, though, this is TOTALLY doable. No problemo!!!

Oh, yeah, El Paso could finally hook up with New Mexico, which is what I suspect they've always wanted anyway with their contrarian "Mountain Time Zone."
I figure another good source of income for New Israel be the tolls they could place on I-10 & 20 without even having to build the dang things. They could have that infrastructure for FREE!

Guys, I've been giving this a lot of thought, and I think I've come up with the PERFECT solution that NONE of you will be able to find a fault in.
Let's give most of Far West Texas to the Israelites and let them voluntarily move there. It's got mountains and access to both the Pecos and Rio Grande rivers. In the northeastern portion of that area, there's a fuckton of oil. So, they ought to make a pretty good economy out of it.
Plus, they'd have a whole bunch more land than they currently have. Yeah, there are a few people out there, but not many--I'd guess maybe 40,000 more or less. So, it's not like they'd be displacing many folks. They'd easily have a majority and be guaranteed a Jewish state.
Sure, we'd be forfeiting the Davis Mountains and Big Bend, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice so long as they allow Americans to visit. Plus, we'd get a groovy new trade partner to join NAFTA.
What's not to like? I CHALLENGE ANYONE to come up with faults in my PERFECT PLAN! Why can't y'all see my wisdom?

The rub is all in the "affordable." Chemical processes require energy. Energy costs money (even renewable energy like solar -- initial investment, dispatching, maintenance, there's real cost there). So, desal costs money. The key to cheap desal is cheap energy. Which, indeed, hasn't been cracked yet.
Oh, there's also the teeny tiny cost problem of transportation. Want to build a 450 mile pipeline to pump that desalinated water to Midland from Corpus? A decent-sized pipeline costs anywhere from $5 million to over $10 million per mile (and that $5 million number is way low from what I understand these days). Even if we split the difference and say it's $7.5 million per mile, that's around $3.4 billion....just to build it. Now you have to operate it (takes energy to pump water uphill) and maintain it -- a shitload in opex every year.
There are solutions to every problem we have (energy, water, etc.). All it takes is ungodly amounts of money. What we're searching for are cost-effective solutions, and those are really hard to come by. Not criticizing your post, BTW -- you acknowledge the problem. Just building on it.
9 minutes ago, Biff Tannen said:One of my questions is regarding how much energy it requires. In my very rudimentary understanding of the process, it's basically electrolysis right? Have there been advances in the efficiency of that process or is it pretty much a constant, just due to physics?
And yes, the infrastructure part will always be a huge issue, but it HAS to happen.
Another consideration with desalination is what to do with all the brine, but smart folks are looking into that.

It's not that nuclear reactors are unprofitable - once they're running they just keep churning out power pretty much indefinitely with planned outages. But building and certifying them is immensely costly and full of risk due to the long construction times. This professor has a load of great talks on nuclear energy, but this is a great primer on why we aren't building more big nuke plants
But as you note, SMRs sidestep much of these problems. Waste is easier with them too since each fuel pebble element is it's own dry cask storage (in theory)
This was excellent. Thank you.

Perhaps some folks should stop stubbornly spurning Nuclear energy in favor of wind and solar as well. If we really want to make sure the grid is firm, increased nuclear energy is going to be a must.
Who are the folks "stubbornly spurning nuclear energy"? It's not like individuals can mount a nuclear reactor on the roof of their house like they do solar panels or that some rancher can cut a deal with a nuclear power plant builder like they would some wind or solar farm developer.
I believe you live in the Waco area, meaning your electricity provider is Oncor. What's stopping Oncor from building more nukes like they have in Glen Rose? The cost. It's expensive as shit because of all the safety regulations due to the inherent risks of an accident, and building new ones likely wouldn't be profitable. So, are you saying we should get rid of the regulations? Which regulations are especially onerous or unneeded? Are you volunteering to live within a couple of miles of one?
If these plants can't be built profitably while also being safe, who should build them? A government that doesn't have to worry about direct ROI? Which government, federal or state? Guess what? There aren't good answers to those questions, and there haven't been any for quite a while.
So, in the meantime, we have these two revolutionary new technologies that are super cheap now that can generate a whole fuck load of power under the right conditions and that don't cause a bunch of air pollution. The problem is just managing the distribution and storage of that power so that it can get to where it needs to be (transmission) when it needs to be (storage).
Has anyone priced out the cost of a new nuclear power plant versus the transmission lines and batteries we need to continue supplying our energy with renewables? I'd bet Oncor has, and there's a reason why they're not building any today.
Maybe SMRs will revolutionize the business and solve all our energy problems. I'd be 100% in favor of that. How cool would it be for each town to have one set up next to their water tower?
But, then, what the hell do we do with the waste?

I bet that’s a drop in the bucket compared to what DPS spends protecting Abbott and flying his ass around the state for his PR stunts to get on Fox News and Newsmax.
Oh, easy. Around the Governor's mansion, there are at least a half-dozen DPS troopers at any given time (that we can see), each paid around $80,000 a year. Multiply that by 3 for each shift, and you're already looking at almost $1.5 million. Of course, this doesn't take into account anything else like, as you mentioned, traveling around the state.

- Paragraph 2 (e) applies to armed conflicts not of an international character and thus does not apply to situations of internal disturbances and tensions, such as riots, isolated and sporadic acts of violence or other acts of a similar nature. It applies to armed conflicts that take place in the territory of a State when there is protracted armed conflict between governmental authorities and organized armed groups or between such groups.
-
Grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, namely, any of the following acts against persons or property protected under the provisions of the relevant Geneva Convention:
- Nothing in paragraph 2 (c) and (e) shall affect the responsibility of a Government to maintain or re-establish law and order in the State or to defend the unity and territorial integrity of the State, by all legitimate means.
QuoteAs ethnic cleansing has not been recognized as an independent crime under international law, there is no precise definition of this concept or the exact acts to be qualified as ethnic cleansing. A United Nations Commission of Experts mandated to look into violations of international humanitarian law committed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia defined ethnic cleansing in its interim report S/25274 as "… rendering an area ethnically homogeneous by using force or intimidation to remove persons of given groups from the area." In its final report S/1994/674, the same Commission described ethnic cleansing as “… a purposeful policy designed by one ethnic or religious group to remove by violent and terror-inspiring means the civilian population of another ethnic or religious group from certain geographic areas.”
The Commission of Experts also stated that the coercive practices used to remove the civilian population can include: murder, torture, arbitrary arrest and detention, extrajudicial executions, rape and sexual assaults, severe physical injury to civilians, confinement of civilian population in ghetto areas, forcible removal, displacement and deportation of civilian population, deliberate military attacks or threats of attacks on civilians and civilian areas, use of civilians as human shields, destruction of property, robbery of personal property, attacks on hospitals, medical personnel, and locations with the Red Cross/Red Crescent emblem, among others.
The Commission of Experts added that these practices can “… constitute crimes against humanity and can be assimilated to specific war crimes. Furthermore, such acts could also fall within the meaning of the Genocide Convention.”

we just got into a text convo that ended like this basically. and I just put our texts on mute and his insta on mute. I can receive calls, text messages and DMs but if he abuses it, I'll end it. It's so sad, I was so loving and he's so fucking mad at me right now. he's demanding I look at his crap and he won't look at mine and he just blasted Frontline as a media conspiracy against the truth.
Here's the thing, the shit they watch - like 2000 mules - and Frontline without a discriminating eye look similar. Introduction of the evidence usually with a person talking, show the evidence, explain what the evidence concludes with a person talking, period. Next chapter, introduction of the evidence, show the evidence, explain the evidence, period. Repeat until the story is told. But 2000 mules doesn't have evidence it has information that is explained to fit the narrative. The evidence is a woman at 1am dropping off 4 votes with a mask on. See, she's a mule, who votes at 1am? who wears a mask? who votes 4 times? What if she's a shift worker? What if she's taking her elderly mom and dad's vote and her husband's vote? what if she's got a mask because of COVID? none of that matters. geo fencing, people driving by voting drops 28 times and going to get out the vote non-profit shams! They have like 3 videos of voter drop offs and claim thousands of mules. It's unreal what gets by these people.
Frontline on the other hand, a journalist introduces the evidence, the evidence is under oath witness testimony, then that witness explains in their own words on the show, then back to their under oath testimony, then a picture of trump from the national archives on the phone with people in the room from that conversation, then the indictment in words, then the commentator to draw the conclusion, period. You know, real evidence.
You know what I'm going to do?
I'm going to double down on my kids. that's what i'm going to do.
I'm really sorry. In early 2020, I lost one of my best friends over all this shit--we'd been friends since the 6th grade and even roommates in college. He basically has cut off communication with our core group of about a half-dozen friends because of his devotion to Trump. It's all just so fucking sad.

I get that Cloak Room only sees binary shades of black and white (which is ironic given the sheer number of non-binary posters who dominate the Cloak Room), but one can want to offset USA's responsibilities to EU/NATO countries and still be anti-Russia.
Especially when USA is going to ALSO have to be giving support to Israel, and potentially how much and how long who knows if they respond to Iran, etc. etc.
QuoteThose who think the US is overburdened in its support of Ukraine are sorely mistaken.

I guess I got lost and wandered into the wrong thread.
So, @BeardIP, you were saying something about the US being overburdened in its support for Ukraine?

A whole lot of those counties out west and in the north have small populations - Swisher County has 6,700 people, Dickens 1,700, Scurry 17,000, etc. so what goes over well in Bum Fuck, Texas, population of 3,000, won’t go over as well in a much larger county or city.
From that same page on the state website:
1. Catholic Church 4,673,500 18.59 20.95 2. Southern Baptist Convention 3,722,194 14.80 16.88 3. Non-Denominational Christian 1,546,542 6.15 — 4. United Methodist Church 1,122,736 4.46 4.90 5. Even among the Catholics, many do use and prefer to have access to birth control, else they’d outnumber the Baptists by far more than 900,000.And having gone to my wife’s Southern Baptist church here in Austin off and on for years (thankfully she left for the Presbyterians), and looking around at friends and family elsewhere in Texas (and having attended services, weddings, funerals, etc. in their churches)it was rare to see families with more than two kids. Usually those with more than two stopped at three, so most of them were practicing birth control or doing it in the pooper.
Looking around, stats seem to be about 40% of Texas adults regularly attend church, which explains why more than 10 million Texans aren’t identified by faith.
Its a weird hill for the group of Republicans pushing against birth control to die upon, as it could usher in the younger folks voting.
edit: I question whether 40% are regularly attending church these days. - COVID Really did a number on people attending church and realizing they’d rather have their Sundays back for other stuff.
Yeah, the data on the Texas Almanac page are dated. I don't have time to sort through this right now, but here are the 2020 survey results for Texas. It looks like you can drill down to the county level.
