  1. Here's the story about the author. Not lol at all. Edit: Btw, the image is really from a Motley Crew concert at Wembley.

  3. Ah, that's where you're wrong, my jejune Jar Jar. They could have really friendly neighbors and never have to worry about security again. Hell, they wouldn't ever need a dang army. And can you imagine what kind of awesome fucking canteloupe-, nopal-, and yucca-based dishes they could come up with? My gawd. Make em eat Kosher Bell! So, instead of kicking out 2.2 million brown people for everlasting security, we'd only have to kick out less than 40k. Of course, this would mean the Israelis must "volunteer" to make this happen. Never mind that, though, this is TOTALLY doable. No problemo!!!
  4. Oh, yeah, El Paso could finally hook up with New Mexico, which is what I suspect they've always wanted anyway with their contrarian "Mountain Time Zone." I figure another good source of income for New Israel be the tolls they could place on I-10 & 20 without even having to build the dang things. They could have that infrastructure for FREE!
  5. Guys, I've been giving this a lot of thought, and I think I've come up with the PERFECT solution that NONE of you will be able to find a fault in. Let's give most of Far West Texas to the Israelites and let them voluntarily move there. It's got mountains and access to both the Pecos and Rio Grande rivers. In the northeastern portion of that area, there's a fuckton of oil. So, they ought to make a pretty good economy out of it. Plus, they'd have a whole bunch more land than they currently have. Yeah, there are a few people out there, but not many--I'd guess maybe 40,000 more or less. So, it's not like they'd be displacing many folks. They'd easily have a majority and be guaranteed a Jewish state. Sure, we'd be forfeiting the Davis Mountains and Big Bend, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice so long as they allow Americans to visit. Plus, we'd get a groovy new trade partner to join NAFTA. What's not to like? I CHALLENGE ANYONE to come up with faults in my PERFECT PLAN! Why can't y'all see my wisdom?
  6. Another consideration with desalination is what to do with all the brine, but smart folks are looking into that. https://news.mit.edu/2019/brine-desalianation-waste-sodium-hydroxide-0213
  7. Someone call Guinness. I think we've found the absolute most punchable face anywhere in the history of ever.
  8. Who are the folks "stubbornly spurning nuclear energy"? It's not like individuals can mount a nuclear reactor on the roof of their house like they do solar panels or that some rancher can cut a deal with a nuclear power plant builder like they would some wind or solar farm developer. I believe you live in the Waco area, meaning your electricity provider is Oncor. What's stopping Oncor from building more nukes like they have in Glen Rose? The cost. It's expensive as shit because of all the safety regulations due to the inherent risks of an accident, and building new ones likely wouldn't be profitable. So, are you saying we should get rid of the regulations? Which regulations are especially onerous or unneeded? Are you volunteering to live within a couple of miles of one? If these plants can't be built profitably while also being safe, who should build them? A government that doesn't have to worry about direct ROI? Which government, federal or state? Guess what? There aren't good answers to those questions, and there haven't been any for quite a while. So, in the meantime, we have these two revolutionary new technologies that are super cheap now that can generate a whole fuck load of power under the right conditions and that don't cause a bunch of air pollution. The problem is just managing the distribution and storage of that power so that it can get to where it needs to be (transmission) when it needs to be (storage). Has anyone priced out the cost of a new nuclear power plant versus the transmission lines and batteries we need to continue supplying our energy with renewables? I'd bet Oncor has, and there's a reason why they're not building any today. Maybe SMRs will revolutionize the business and solve all our energy problems. I'd be 100% in favor of that. How cool would it be for each town to have one set up next to their water tower? But, then, what the hell do we do with the waste?
  9. Jon Stewart's take from Monday night on the Gettysburg speech (also note the bored and restless kid with the backward Confederate baseball cap on the left):
  10. I dunno. You left out racists, xenophobes, misogynists, and homo(trans)phobes, of which one could be any without also being rich, a religious zealot, or a pedophile. Poke around the Lulz or football board, and I'd bet you could find lots of examples within minutes from our secular Surly crowd in the Lol pic thread alone.
  11. Oh, easy. Around the Governor's mansion, there are at least a half-dozen DPS troopers at any given time (that we can see), each paid around $80,000 a year. Multiply that by 3 for each shift, and you're already looking at almost $1.5 million. Of course, this doesn't take into account anything else like, as you mentioned, traveling around the state.
  12. Specifically, here's how the international community defines these various crimes. Just go bullet by bullet to identify all of the shit we've seen.
  13. I'm really sorry. In early 2020, I lost one of my best friends over all this shit--we'd been friends since the 6th grade and even roommates in college. He basically has cut off communication with our core group of about a half-dozen friends because of his devotion to Trump. It's all just so fucking sad.

So, @BeardIP, you were saying something about the US being overburdened in its support for Ukraine?
  15. Yeah, the data on the Texas Almanac page are dated. I don't have time to sort through this right now, but here are the 2020 survey results for Texas. It looks like you can drill down to the county level. https://thearda.com/us-religion/census/congregational-membership?t=1&y=2020
  16. Those who think the US is overburdened in its support of Ukraine are sorely mistaken. Here's the chart showing the GDP percentage for each country: https://app.23degrees.io/view/F1tc2gv8QzFCs1ij-bar-stacked-horizontal-figure_3_4_csv_v2-1 Estonia 4.1% Denmark 3.0% Lithuania 2.0% Norway 1.7% Latvia 1.7% Netherlands 1.5% Slovakia 1.4% Poland 1.3% Finland 1.3% Germany 1.1% Croatia 1.0% Bulgaria 1.0% Sweden 1.0% Czech Republic 1.0% Belgium 1.0% Spain 0.9% Austria 0.8% Greece 0.8% Slovenia 0.7% Hungary 0.7% Italy 0.7% France 0.7% Romania 0.6% Portugal 0.6% Cyprus 0.6% United Kingdom 0.6% Luxembourg 0.6% Malta 0.5% Ireland 0.4% Switzerland 0.3% Canada 0.3% UNITED STATES 0.3% Japan 0.2% Iceland 0.2% South Korea 0.1% @BeardIP I expect you to return and apologize for being so wrong in assuming other countries aren't also shouldering their burden.
  17. It's not even the Bible taking precedence over the Constitution. It's their specific interpretation of scripture that has to be followed. Take the issue of birth control, for example. The Catholic and, I guess, now a new fundagelical prohibition on contraception was God's command to go forth to "be fruitful and multiply," along with the story about God smiting Onan for disobeying him by not knocking up his dead brother's wife and instead "spilling his seed." Well, guess what? I've used some form of birth control my entire and have multiplied. Maybe not by a factor that others would like, but I did. I had a kid with my ex-wife. Then there's God's wrath at a guy not putting his sperm up a gal's coot-coot. Did he kill him for the jizz getting on the ground or for disobeying his command? I, for one, have "spilled my seed" in places you wouldn't want to know about, but God hasn't struck me down. So maybe the issue is not really the "issue." This gets back to OP's old rant about Texas being run by if it were to secede and be led by Catholics because it's the largest sect--though nowhere close to being a majority. Shit is way too split for one interpretation of scripture to dominate over the others, which is kind of the fucking point of having a wall separate church and state. Why the hell do these theocrats want to go back to goddam holy wars?
  18. Just to the belt buckle. Also, since you watched that donkey show for your buddy, you should get him to watch the Frontline episode in kind.

  20. I haven't read the book, but I rewatched the 1980 one from when I was a kid (and hadn't seen it since) in the week before this premiered. The older adaptation treated the scene similarly to this newer one. Thanks for the additional background.
